PARAMEDIC CERTIFICATE<br />

The paramedic is able to diagnose and treat medical<br />

emergencies and accident victims in the pre-hospital<br />

setting. To apply for the Paramedic program, a student<br />

must already be an Emergency Medical Technician; see<br />

Emergency Medical Technician for more information.<br />

The Paramedic Certificate is a one-year program that<br />

runs from January to December or June to June and<br />

requires special application. For more information, visit<br />

The Paramedic Academy is accredited by the<br />

Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education<br />

Programs upon the recommendation of the Committee<br />

on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the<br />

Emergency Medical Services Professions (CoAEMSP).<br />

This certificate prepares students to take the state<br />

examination to practice as a paramedic.<br />

EMS 81 Paramedic Introduction to EMS 3.0<br />

EMS 82 Paramedic Cardiology 4.5<br />

EMS 83 Paramedic Pharmacology 3.5<br />

EMS 84 Emergency Medical Services 10.0<br />

EMS 85 Paramedic Clinical 4.0<br />

EMS 86 Paramedic Field Internship 11.5<br />

Associate Degree<br />

To earn an A.S. degree with a major in Paramedic,<br />

complete all of the above Paramedic Certificate<br />

requirements and meet all <strong>Victor</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

graduation requirements.<br />

Transfer<br />

Not a transfer major. Some students pursue bachelor’s<br />

degrees in related fields such as Emergency Medical<br />

Care at Loma Linda University.<br />

COURSES<br />

EMS 50 EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONDER<br />

(Formerly ALDH 70)<br />

Units: 2.5 - 32-36 hours lecture and 24-27 hours<br />

laboratory. (No prerequisite). This course may be taken<br />

3 times.<br />

This course provides training in basic emergency care<br />

skills, including patient assessment, CPR, automated<br />

external defibrillation, use of definitive airway adjuncts,<br />

splinting, and control of bleeding.<br />

EMS 51 EMERGENCY MEDICAL RESPONDER-<br />

REFRESHER (Formerly ALDH 70B)<br />

Units: 1.5 - 16-18 hours lecture and 24-27 hours<br />

laboratory. (No prerequisite. Grade Option). This course<br />

may be taken unlimited times.<br />

This course provides refresher training for re-certifying<br />

the Emergency First Responder. Training includes basic<br />

emergency care skills, including patient assessment,<br />

CPR, automated external defibrillation, use of definitive<br />

airway adjuncts, splinting, and control of bleeding.<br />

EMS 60 EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN<br />

(Formerly ALDH 71)<br />

Units: 9.0 - 120-135 hours lecture and 72-81 hours<br />

laboratory. (Prerequisite: 18 years of age before first<br />

day of class and a minimum grade of “B” in CPR<br />

equivalent to 2010 AHA BLS for Healthcare providers.<br />

State mandated.) This course may be taken 2 times.<br />

This course provides training in basic emergency care<br />

skills, including CPR, automated external defibrillation,<br />

use of definitive airway adjuncts, and assisting patients<br />

with certain medications. Approved by the Inland<br />

Counties Emergency Medical Agency. All students must<br />

be eighteen years of age and have CPR (Cardio-<br />

Pulmonary Resuscitation) training equivalent to the<br />

American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Level<br />

(Title 22, Div. 9, Ch. 2, Sect. 100066 b2 California Code<br />

of Regulations) prior to the first day of class due to<br />

current clinical/field internship affiliation agreements.<br />

EMS 61 EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN<br />

REFRESHER (Formerly ALDH 72)<br />

Units: 1.0 - 8-9 hours lecture and 24-27 hours<br />

laboratory. (No prerequisite). This course may be taken<br />

unlimited times.<br />

Thirty hour refresher course required for renewal of<br />

Emergency Medical Technician I Certificate. New<br />

Certificate of Completion awarded. Course approved by<br />

the Inland County Emergency Medical Agency.<br />
