COMMERCIAL ART • COMMUNICATION STUDIES<br />

developing effective teaching strategies, play-oriented<br />

curriculum planning based upon observation and<br />

assessment, discipline and guidance techniques,<br />

cooperative relationships with staff and families,<br />

professional ethics and assessment of one’s own<br />

professional competence. Current (within a year)<br />

medical verification of absence of tuberculosis (TB).<br />

CHDV 220 THE MENTOR TEACHER/ADULT<br />

SUPERVISION<br />

Units: 2.0 - 32-36 hours lecture. CSU. (Prerequisites:<br />

CHDV 106 and CHDV 100, or equivalent, with a grade<br />

of “C” or better.)<br />

A study of the methods and principles of supervising<br />

adults in early childhood programs. Emphasis is placed<br />

on the role of experienced classroom teachers/<br />

supervisors who function as Mentors to teachers while<br />

simultaneously addressing the needs of children,<br />

parents and other staff.<br />

CHDV 239 ADMINISTRATION OF CHILDREN’S<br />

PROGRAMS I<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU. [Prerequisite:<br />

Completion of the State Department of Health required<br />

core courses (CHDV 106 and CHDV 100 or equivalent.)<br />

Currently working in the field recommended.]<br />

This course focuses on funding, licensing, planning,<br />

organizing, and managing a variety of programs for<br />

young children. The administrator’s role, site<br />

development, on-going organization, and working with<br />

the parents and volunteers explored. This course is<br />

designed to fulfill three of the six semester units of<br />

administration required for the site supervisor permit.<br />

CHDV 240 ADMINISTRATION OF CHILDREN’S<br />

PROGRAMS II<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU. [Prerequisite:<br />

Completion of the State Department of Health required<br />

core courses (CHDV 106 and CHDV 100 or equivalent.)<br />

Currently working in the field recommended.]<br />

This course explores the human relations aspect of<br />

administering children’s programs. The emphasis will be<br />

placed on leadership styles, communication strategies,<br />

and promoting a positive climate for staff and children.<br />

This course is designed to fulfill three of the six<br />

semester units of administration required for the Site<br />

Supervisor Permit.<br />

COMMERCIAL ART<br />

CART 71 SURVEY OF COMPUTER GRAPHICS<br />

STUDIO<br />

Units: 4.0 - 48-54 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. (No prerequisite). This course may be taken<br />

four times.<br />

This course will introduce students to industry standard<br />

software packages used in visual communications.<br />

Students will be instructed on the basic use of draw,<br />

paint/photo, layout, multimedia, web and digital video<br />

applications. Topics covered include: Operating systems<br />

basics, drawing and painting on the computer, digitizing<br />

and editing sound and video and designing for<br />

interactivity.<br />

CART 133 DIGITAL IMAGING<br />

Units: 3.0 – 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU. (No prerequisite. Recommended<br />

preparation ART 112 or ART 113). This course may be<br />

taken two times.<br />

An introductory course that explores a fine arts<br />

approach to computer generated imaging using Adobe<br />

Photoshop. See cross-listing for ART 133.<br />

CART 134 THE ART OF WEB DESIGN<br />

Units: 4.0 - 48-54 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU. (No prerequisite). This course may be<br />

taken four times.<br />

An overview of most current industry standard software<br />

used for creating web pages. This course does not focus<br />

on HTML or scripting language but is focused on the<br />

development effective communications design. See<br />

COMMUNICATION STUDIES<br />

Communication Studies is an expansive field which<br />

aims to: (1) analyze, understand, and facilitate effective<br />

expression of organized thought, and (2) facilitate<br />

successful interaction with self, others, society and the<br />

world. Skills developed within this field are readily<br />

applicable in daily life. A bachelor’s degree in<br />

Communication Studies offers pathways to careers in<br />

law, education, government, public relations and<br />

advertising, arts and entertainment, social and human<br />

services, international relations and negotiations. The<br />

Communication Studies Program features an advanced<br />

Communication Center, located on the 2 nd floor of the<br />

Performing Arts Center, Room 54-213. The center is<br />

available to help with the development and delivery of<br />

oral presentations from research, outlining and delivery,<br />

to visual aids including PowerPoint presentations.<br />
