BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE<br />

BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE<br />

The biological science courses are designed to meet a<br />

variety of student requirements. Some courses are<br />

designed to fulfill the laboratory general education<br />

requirement.<br />

Biology and pre-professional majors will find rigorous,<br />

comprehensive classes. Other classes, including nonlaboratory,<br />

are offered for non-majors and those with<br />

special interest areas. A certificate in Biotechnology is<br />

also offered.<br />

CERTIFICATE IN BIOTECHNOLOGY<br />

Units Required: 16.0<br />

The certificate in Biotechnology is geared towards<br />

students interested in gaining entry level jobs in the<br />

laboratory, and can apply to the many different areas<br />

within the biotechnology industry such as clinical,<br />

forensic, or agricultural applications. Students pursuing<br />

this certificate will gain a basic biological foundation<br />

(BIOL 100 or 107), followed by an overview of the<br />

Biotechnology profession (BIOL 70) along with classes<br />

instructing technique (BIOL 71) and application of skills.<br />

Group I - All of the following must be completed:<br />

BIOL 100 General Biology 4.0<br />

or 107 Introduction to Human Biology<br />

BIOL 70 Introduction to Biotechnology 5.0<br />

BIOL 71 Introduction to Laboratory Technique 4.0<br />

Group II - Complete 3.0 units from courses below:<br />

BIOL 52 Forensic Entomology 3.0<br />

BIOL 54 Forensic Pathology 3.0<br />

BIOL 129 Independent Study in Biology 1.0-3.0<br />

BIOL 98 Projects in Biology 1.0-3.0<br />

Associate Degree<br />

No associate degree offered with a major in Biological<br />

Science. Biology courses may be used to fulfill<br />

requirements for an Associate in Science degree with a<br />

major in Math/Science. Biology courses may also be<br />

used to fulfill requirements for an Associate in Arts<br />

degree with a major in Liberal Arts. See Math/Science<br />

or Liberal Arts for degree requirements for these majors.<br />

BIOL 138 (Cooperative Education) may be used as<br />

Elective credit but may not be used to fulfill major<br />

requirements.<br />
