AVIATION • BASIC SKILLS<br />

AVA 52 GENERAL AVIATION 2<br />

Units: 9.5 – 120-135 hours lecture and 96-108 hours<br />

laboratory. (Prerequisite: AVA 51 with a grade of ‘B’ or<br />

better)<br />

This course is designed to prepare students for a career<br />

in aviation maintenance technology. Topics include<br />

maintenance and ground operations.<br />

AVA 61 AIRFRAME 1<br />

Units: 9.5 – 96-108 hours lecture and 168-189 hours<br />

laboratory. (Prerequisite: AVA 51 with a grade of ‘B’ or<br />

better)<br />

This course is designed to prepare students for a career<br />

in aviation maintenance technology. Topics include<br />

aircraft materials (wood, metal, nonmetallic), coverings<br />

and finishes, aircraft inspection, assembly and rigging<br />

and welding.<br />

AVA 62 AIRFRAME 2<br />

Units: 9.5 – 96-108 hours lecture and 168-189 hours<br />

laboratory. (Prerequisite: AVA 51 with a grade of ‘B’ or<br />

better)<br />

This course is designed to prepare students for a career<br />

in aviation maintenance technology. Topics include<br />

aircraft atmosphere, communication, navigation, fuel,<br />

landing gear, hydraulic, and pneumatic power systems.<br />

AVA 63 AIRFRAME 3<br />

Units: 9.5 – 96-108 hours lecture and 168-189 hours<br />

laboratory. (Prerequisite: AVA 51 with a grade of ‘B’ or<br />

better)<br />

This course is designed to prepare students for a career<br />

in aviation maintenance technology. Topics include<br />

aircraft electrical systems, positioning and warning<br />

systems, ice and rain control systems, and fire<br />

protection systems.<br />

AVA 71 POWERPLANT 1<br />

Units: 10.5 – 128-144 hours lecture and 120-135 hours<br />

laboratory. (Prerequisite: AVA 51 with a grade of ‘B’ or<br />

better)<br />

This course is designed to prepare students for a career<br />

in aviation maintenance technology. Topics include<br />

reciprocating engines, turbine engines, and engine<br />

inspection.<br />

AVA 72 POWERPLANT 2<br />

Units: 10.5 – 128-144 hours lecture and 120-135 hours<br />

laboratory. (Prerequisite: AVA 51 with a grade of ‘B’ or<br />

better)<br />

This course is designed to prepare students for a career<br />

in aviation maintenance technology. Topics include<br />

induction and engine airflow systems, engine exhaust<br />

and reverser systems, and propellers.<br />

AVA 73 POWERPLANT 3<br />

Units: 10.5 – 128-144 hours lecture and 120-135 hours<br />

laboratory. (Prerequisite AVA 51 with a grade of ‘B’ or<br />

better)<br />

This course is designed to prepare students for a career<br />

in aviation maintenance technology. Topics include<br />

engine instrument systems, engine electrical, ignition<br />

and starting systems, and engine fuel systems.<br />

BASIC SKILLS<br />

The Basic Skills program consists of several English<br />

and Math courses designed to prepare students for<br />

English 6 and Math 10 and to allow more advanced<br />

students to review core English and Math skills.<br />

Students enroll in courses that combine lecture and lab,<br />

which allow students to receive direct instruction in a<br />

classroom setting while practicing their skills at their<br />

own pace.<br />

To prepare for English 6, students should enroll in BSKL<br />

1, Reading and Writing One (2 units), and then BSKL 2,<br />

Reading and Writing 2 (2 units). Students who place in<br />

English 6 or English 50 and are interested in reviewing<br />

their grammar skills should enroll in BSKL 5, Beginning<br />

English Grammar (2 units).<br />

Students who want to move more gradually towards<br />

English 6 should begin with BSKL 1A, Reading and<br />

Writing One-A, and then take BSKL 1B, Reading and<br />

Writing One-B. They should then take BSKL 2, Reading<br />

and Writing Two.<br />

To prepare for Math 10, students should enroll in BSKL<br />

6, Math Operations with Whole Numbers (1 unit); BSKL<br />

7, Math Operations with Rational Numbers (1 unit); and<br />

then BSKL 8, Math Operations with Decimals. Students<br />

who place in Math 50 and are interested in a review<br />

should enroll in BSKL 9, Fractions, Decimals and<br />

Percentages (1 unit).<br />

BASIC SKILLS COURSES<br />

BSKL 1 READING AND WRITING ONE<br />

Units: 2.0 - 16-18 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. This course will not apply to the Associate<br />

Degree. (No prerequisite. Pass/No Pass)<br />

This course is the first in a series that focuses on<br />

reading and writing skills. Students develop their<br />

vocabulary base along with grammar and sentence<br />

writing skills.<br />
