PROGRAMS / COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

ART AND DESIGN • ASTRONOMY • ATHLETICS<br />

Students explore the principles of three-dimensional<br />

forms in space in order to develop an understanding of<br />

the relationship between form, space and materials and<br />

process. In order to construct their own ideas in space,<br />

students will become familiar with a variety of materials,<br />

which may include clay, metal, wood and stone.<br />

ART 142 SCULPTURE II<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU (No prerequisite. Recommended<br />

preparation: ART 141 or ART 112 or ART 113.) This<br />

course may be taken two times.<br />

Students explore the traditional materials and<br />

techniques of sculpture such as building armatures,<br />

sculpting in wax, plaster and clay, mold making<br />

methods, and surface treatments for the sculptural<br />

pieces which may include stains, patina, antiquing and<br />

waxing of plaster and applying slips and glazes to clay.<br />

ART 150 OIL PAINTING I<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU, UC. (No prerequisite.) This course<br />

may be taken two times.<br />

A beginning course in painting using oil color. Repetition<br />

of this course provides the opportunity for increased skill<br />

development.<br />

ART 151 INTERMEDIATE OIL PAINTING<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU, UC. (No prerequisite) This course<br />

may be taken four times.<br />

There will be continuation of techniques covered in<br />

Art 150 with an emphasis upon aesthetics, art history,<br />

critical analysis, and creativity. The student, through his<br />

own resourcefulness, is to formulate problems of<br />

compositional design, control of the medium and<br />

establish value judgments based upon fact that will be<br />

reflected in his works. Repetition of this course provides<br />

the opportunity for increased skill development.<br />

ART 160 SURVEY OF VISUAL COMMUNICATION<br />

TECHNOLOGIES<br />

Units: 4.0 - 48-54 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU (No prerequisite)<br />

An overview of digital design software used by graphic<br />

designers. Students are given the opportunity to sample<br />

professional digital design tools while applying the<br />

fundamentals of design.<br />

ASTRONOMY COURSES<br />

ASTR 101 DESCRIPTIVE ASTRONOMY<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />

prerequisite)<br />

A comprehensive study of astronomy. The historical<br />

development of astronomy, the structure of the solar<br />

system, modern techniques and instruments, the<br />

character of nebulae and galaxies, stellar character and<br />

theories, and the philosophical implications of<br />

astronomical discoveries.<br />

ATHLETICS<br />

In keeping with the philosophy of providing programs to<br />

meet the diverse needs of students so that they may<br />

continue to develop physically, mentally, and<br />

emotionally throughout their lifetime, <strong>Victor</strong> <strong>Valley</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> supports and encourages students to<br />

participate in its athletic programs.<br />

To meet this philosophic commitment, <strong>Victor</strong> <strong>Valley</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> athletic offerings include football, softball, men’s<br />

and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, men’s and<br />

women’s basketball, wrestling, golf, men’s and women’s<br />

soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and<br />

women’s track and field, and baseball.<br />

<strong>Victor</strong> <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>College</strong> is a member of the Foothill Athletic<br />

Conference and also competes with other community<br />

college conferences, California State and University<br />

junior varsity teams, private colleges, and service<br />

teams. A student must be enrolled in 12 units to<br />

participate in the intercollegiate athletic program.<br />

Student athletes are granted up to two years of eligibility<br />

per sport but must complete 24 units between seasons<br />

of competition with a “C” or better grade average in<br />

order to be eligible for the second year.<br />

There are other factors that are essential in determining<br />

eligibility, and athletes should consult with the Eligibility<br />

Evaluator regarding eligibility matters. All varsity athletic<br />

classes meet 10 laboratory hours per week for 3 units.<br />
