ALDH 177 ATHLETIC TRAINING IV<br />

(Formerly ALDH 77)<br />

Units: 2.0-6.0 - 108-324 hours laboratory. CSU, UC<br />

(Recommended preparation: PE 141 or ALDH 141,<br />

Athletic Training I, or equivalent.) This course may be<br />

taken four times.<br />

In this course, students will provide the care to athletes<br />

involved in fall/winter/spring sports programs at VVC<br />

(baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer, softball,<br />

tennis, volleyball, track/field and wrestling.) Experience<br />

will include but is not limited to development and<br />

implementation of rehabilitation protocols. Use of<br />

modalities including, whirlpool, ultrasound, ice,<br />

Emergency Medical Services, hydrocolator packs,<br />

Range of Motion exercises, joint mobilization,<br />

strengthening exercises (isokinetic, isotonic, isometric),<br />

cardiovascular conditioning and proprioceptive<br />

AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE COURSES<br />

ASL 121 FINGERSPELLING (Formerly CMST 121)<br />

Units: 1.0 - 16-18 hours lecture. CSU. (No prerequisite)<br />

An introductory course that teaches the student the<br />

appropriate application of fingerspelling and its<br />

production. The course will include strategies for<br />

improvement. Also included will be the articulation of<br />

loan signs and one to three digit numbers. Emphasis on<br />

both receptive and expressive fluency.<br />

ASL 122 AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE 1<br />

(Formerly CMST 122)<br />

Units: 4.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (No<br />

prerequisite)<br />

An introduction to American Sign Language as it is used<br />

with deaf community. Students will study the basic<br />

structure and development of the language as well as<br />

deaf culture. Emphasis is placed on both receptive and<br />

expressive skills.<br />

ASL 123 AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE II<br />

(Formerly CMST 123)<br />

Units: 4.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisite: ASL 122)<br />

A continuation in the study of American Sign Language<br />

as it is used within the deaf culture. Instruction is<br />

provided in the basic structure of the language.<br />

Emphasis is placed on both receptive and expressive<br />

skills.<br />

ASL 124 AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE III<br />

(Formerly CMST 124)<br />

Units: 4.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (Prerequisite:<br />

ASL 123)<br />

Continuation of development of skill in American Sign<br />

Language with emphasis on an intermediate level of<br />

comprehension and expression. Students will progress<br />

in their study of the structure and grammar of American<br />

Sign Language as well as deaf culture. Emphasis is<br />

placed on both receptive and expressive skills.<br />

ASL 125 AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE IV<br />

(Formerly CMST 125)<br />

Units: 4.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. CSU, UC.<br />

(Prerequisites: ASL 124)<br />

A continuation in the study of American Sign Language<br />

and the deaf community including its history and culture.<br />

Emphasis will be on receptive and expressive skills as<br />

they relate to narrating life events. Students will learn<br />

techniques such as role-shifting, use of space and<br />

classifiers in addition to appropriate non-manual<br />

behaviors. This course will prepare the student for<br />

entrance into an interpreter training program.<br />

ASL 126 INTRODUCTION TO INTERPRETING<br />

(Formerly CMST 120)<br />

Units: 4.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. CSU, UC. (Prerequisite:<br />

ASL 125. Grade Option)<br />

This course introduces the field of American Sign<br />

Language interpreting and includes models of<br />

interpreting, ethical principles, and its history and<br />

development in modern times. Attention will be given to<br />

the development of necessary processing skills for<br />

consecutive interpretation.<br />
