PROGRAMS / COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

Phlebotomy Practical Training Form. This course will<br />

prepare the student for the national examination by<br />

covering 24-27 hours of basic didactic material and 24-<br />

27 hours of advanced didactic material in phlebotomy<br />

techniques. This course does not require the student to<br />

attend a pre-lab or clinical component.<br />

ALDH 90C CERTIFIED PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN<br />

1C<br />

Units: 1.5 -24-27 hours lecture. (Prerequisite: High<br />

School graduate or GED or documentation of equivalent<br />

education. Employed within the past 5 years as a<br />

Phlebotomist with 1040 hours or more of on-the-job<br />

experience. Completion of 50 successful venipunctures<br />

and 10 successful skin punctures).<br />

Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1C is designed for a<br />

student who has 1040 hours or greater of on-the-job<br />

experience and who has completed 50 successful<br />

venipuncture’s and 10 successful skin punctures and<br />

observation of 2 arterial blood gases within the past 5<br />

years. Experience needs to be documented on a<br />

California Statement of Phlebotomy Practical Training<br />

Form. This course will prepare the student for the<br />

national examination covering 24-27 hours of advanced<br />

didactic material in phlebotomy techniques, blood borne<br />

pathogens, anti-coagulation theory, specimen collection<br />

and transportation. This course does not require the<br />

student to attend a clinical component.<br />

ALDH 91 BASIC CPR (CARDIOPULMONARY<br />

RESUSCITATION)<br />

Units: 0.5 - 2 hours lecture and 10 hours laboratory. (No<br />

prerequisite)<br />

Emergency first aid procedure that consists of<br />

recognizing respiratory and cardiac arrest and starting<br />

the proper application of cardiopulmonary resuscitation<br />

to maintain life until advanced life support is available.<br />

Upon successful completion of the course, the student<br />

will receive a Basic CPR Certificate from the American<br />

Heart Association.<br />

ALDH 125 MEDICAL ASPECTS OF DRUGS AND<br />

ALCOHOL<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC (UC credit<br />

limitation). (No prerequisite)<br />

This course will provide an in-depth study of the<br />

physiological effects and medical consequences of drug<br />

and alcohol use and abuse, including the effects on the<br />

central nervous system and behavior. The<br />

pharmacological aspects of drug and alcohol use will be<br />

presented including metabolism of various drugs, the<br />

meaning and implication of “half-life,” tolerance,<br />

dependence, addiction process, and withdrawal.<br />

Categories of substances covered will include major and<br />

minor stimulants, alcohol, depressants, psychotropic<br />

drugs, opiates, marijuana, hallucinogens, and other<br />

prescription and over-the-counter drugs.<br />

ALDH 139 MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU. (No prerequisite)<br />

This course describes the body’s anatomical systems<br />

with stress placed on medical terms, their use, spelling,<br />

and pronunciation. The use of these terms is defined in<br />

regard to anatomy, physiology, treatment, and surgery.<br />

ALDH 141 ATHLETIC TRAINING<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU, UC. (No prerequisite. Interest and/or<br />

experience in athletics and sports recommended)<br />

Introduction to principles of athletic training, including<br />

prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of<br />

common athletic injuries. See cross listing for PE 141.<br />

ALDH 142 ATHLETIC TRAINING II<br />

Units: 3.0 – 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU, UC. (No prerequisite. Recommended<br />

Preparation: ALDH 141 or PE 141 Athletic Training I, or<br />

equivalent.)<br />

This course will build on the students basic knowledge<br />

of human anatomy and athletic injuries. Topics will<br />

include emergency procedures, current health concerns<br />

of the athlete, protective devices, advanced taping<br />

techniques and injury management. See cross-listing for<br />

ALDH 176 ATHLETIC TRAINING III<br />

(Formerly ALDH 76)<br />

Units: 2.0-6.0 - 108-324 hours laboratory. CSU, UC<br />

(Prerequisite: ALDH 141 or PE 141 Athletic Training I,<br />

or equivalent). This course may be taken four times.<br />

In this course, students will provide the pre-participation,<br />

on-site first aid and event maintenance for<br />

fall/winter/spring sports programs at VVC (baseball,<br />

basketball, football, golf, soccer, softball, tennis,<br />

volleyball, track/field and wrestling.) Experience will<br />

include but is not limited to, prophylactic taping and<br />

padding, immediate first aid, monitoring vital signs,<br />

completion of accident forms, proper use of universal<br />

biohazard precautions, supervision of safe playing<br />

conditions and coaching techniques, recognition of<br />

medical emergencies, assisting other medical personnel<br />
