PROGRAMS / COURSE DESCRIPTION<br />

ALLIED HEALTH<br />

provided in acute care facilities. Students will learn<br />

nursing practice skills related to the medical-surgical<br />

patient and will have an understanding of physical and<br />

psychosocial changes seen in the acute setting. Must<br />

achieve a grade of “C” or better to receive <strong>Victor</strong> <strong>Valley</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> Certification.<br />

ALDH 80 PHARMACOLOGY<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. (No prerequisite)<br />

Current concepts of pharmacology, its relationship to<br />

patient care, and legal and ethical considerations are<br />

covered. Basic mechanisms of drug action,<br />

administration, toxicity, side effects, and dosages are<br />

also included.<br />

ALDH 81 MEDICAL INSURANCE<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. (No prerequisite)<br />

Intensive instruction and drill in completing medical<br />

insurance forms for the private sector, industrial Medi-<br />

Care, Medi-Cal, Medi-Care/Medi-Cal patient. Basic skills<br />

in billing, collecting, banking, and preparation of payroll.<br />

ALDH 82 MEDICAL OFFICE PROCEDURES<br />

Units: 4.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. 48-54 laboratory. (No<br />

prerequisite)<br />

This course provides practice in medical office<br />

procedures, proficiency in typing medical<br />

correspondence, case histories, insurance forms, and<br />

reports. Study of telephone techniques, medical recordkeeping,<br />

and filing. Verbal communication with patients,<br />

other offices, and facilities. In addition, a lab component<br />

for students to become familiar with preparation and<br />

assistance with common back office procedures.<br />

ALDH 82C MEDICAL OFFICE PROCEDURES –<br />

CLINICAL<br />

Units: 5.0 - 240-270 hours laboratory. (Prerequisite:<br />

ALDH 82 with a grade of ‘C’ or better.) This course may<br />

be taken three times.<br />

This course is designed to provide the externship<br />

component of Allied Health 82, Medical Office<br />

Procedures. The individual students will presented with<br />

270 hours of practical clinical experience. This will be<br />

performed in rotation sequence in the offices and clinics<br />

of qualified physicians located throughout the High<br />

Desert.<br />

ALDH 82D MEDICAL ASSISTING EXAM REVIEW<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. (Prerequisite:<br />

Successful completion of ALDH 82 or equivalent and<br />

ALDH 82C or equivalent.)<br />

This class will prepare the student for the medical<br />

assisting certification exam. The student will learn<br />

strategies to help identify strengths and weaknesses<br />

and develop a realistic study plan.<br />

ALDH 83 BASIC ARRHYTHMIA<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. (No prerequisite)<br />

A review of the general anatomy and physiology of the<br />

heart and coronary system, with complications<br />

associated with acute myocardial infarction with strong<br />

electrophysiological/arrhythmogenic component. Upon<br />

successful completion, the student will receive a<br />

certificate in Basic Electrocardiography and Arrhythmia<br />

Interpretation. (This course has been approved by the<br />

Board of Registered Nursing for Continuing Education<br />

credit.)<br />

ALDH 84 INTRAVENOUS THERAPY<br />

Units: 2.0 - 30 hours of theory/laboratory and 6 hours of<br />

clinical practice in IV therapy. (No prerequisite)<br />

Approved by the Board of Vocational Nursing and the<br />

Board of Registered Nursing for Continuing Education.<br />

Emphasis placed on providing factual knowledge base,<br />

patient-centered psychological aspects, venipuncture<br />

techniques and materials. Legal aspects, especially as<br />

they relate to LVN’s and RN’s, are included.<br />

ALDH 90A CERTIFIED PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN<br />

1A<br />

Units: 5.0 - A minimum of 48-54 hours of didactic, 48-54<br />

hours laboratory, and 48-54 hours of practical clinical<br />

instruction will be required. (Prerequisite: High School<br />

graduate or GED, or documentation of equivalent<br />

education; must be 18 years of age or older.)<br />

Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1A prepares a student<br />

with the education, training, experience, and<br />

examination requirements as specified by the California<br />

Department of Health Services, to perform skin<br />

punctures or venipunctures in a hospital, clinical lab or<br />

doctor’s office.<br />

ALDH 90B CERTIFIED PHLEBOTOMY TECHNICIAN<br />

1B<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. (Prerequisite: High<br />

School graduate or GED or documentation of equivalent<br />

education. Employed within the past 5 years as a<br />

Phlebotomist with less than 1040 hours of experience.<br />

Completion of 50 successful venipunctures and 10<br />

successful skin punctures.)<br />

Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1B is designed for a<br />

student who has less than 1040 hours of job experience<br />

and has completed 50 successful venipunctures and 10<br />

successful skin punctures and observation of 2 arterial<br />

blood gases within the past 5 years. Experience needs<br />

to be documented on a California Statement of<br />
