AGRICULTURE • ALCOHOL/DRUG STUDIES • ALLIED HEALTH<br />

AGNR 160 BEGINNING FLORAL DESIGN<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU. (No prerequisite) This course may be<br />

taken four times.<br />

An introduction to the fundamental theories, techniques<br />

and skills currently practiced in the floral industry.<br />

Includes applied art principles, cut flower care, handling<br />

practices, proper use of florist tools and materials,<br />

pricing of floral products and use of current floral<br />

business technology. Students construct corsages, floral<br />

arrangements, and foliage plant items which meet floral<br />

industry standards.<br />

AGNR 161 ADVANCED FLORAL DESIGN<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU. (No prerequisite) This course may be<br />

taken four times.<br />

Contemporary design theory emphasizing creativity,<br />

self-expression, and professional design situations.<br />

Students learn the skills and techniques of the floral<br />

industry, including wedding, sympathy, party, holiday,<br />

high style and advanced floral designs and displays.<br />

Other techniques include working with the customers,<br />

consultations, pricing and the use of computers.<br />

AGNR 170 ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE AND<br />

SUSTAINABILITY<br />

Units: 4.0 - 64-72 hours lecture. CSU (No prerequisite)<br />

Sustainable use and conservation of the world’s<br />

environment and natural resources, including soil,<br />

water, forest, mineral, plant, and animal life, with<br />

particular attention to California conditions.<br />

Sustainability principles, scientific concepts, modern<br />

problems in resource use, global environmental issues<br />

and the citizen’s role in conservation. The bio-diverse<br />

Mojave Desert serves as an exciting “living lab” to study<br />

this emerging field.<br />

AGNR 171 INTRODUCTION TO GEOGRAPHIC<br />

INFORMATION SCIENCE<br />

Units: 3.0 - 32-36 hours lecture and 48-54 hours<br />

laboratory. CSU (No prerequisite). This course may be<br />

taken three times.<br />

Focus on electronic methods of cartography following a<br />

presentation of mapping concepts and methods. This<br />

course covers the history, structure and uses of the<br />

basic operations of Geographic Information Systems<br />

(GIS), including hardware and software requirements.<br />

Examination of the role of other spatial technologies:<br />

aerial photography, remote sensing, and Global<br />

Positioning Systems (GPS).<br />

AGNR 175 AGRICULTURE, ENVIRONMENT, AND<br />

SOCIETY<br />

Units: 3.0 - 48-54 hours lecture. CSU, UC (No<br />

prerequisite)<br />

This course explores the sociology of agriculture<br />

presented through an examination of relationships<br />

between societies and their environments, economics,<br />

and agriculture. Emphasis on the analysis of<br />

agriculture’s use of technology and the corresponding<br />

impact on the environment, economy, society and<br />

sustainable development.<br />

ALCOHOL AND DRUG STUDIES<br />

Programs in Alcohol and Drug Studies offered at<br />

community colleges explore various aspects of alcohol<br />

and drug abuse, and teach techniques for counseling<br />

those who have a substance abuse problem.<br />

At this time, VVC does not offer a certificate in Alcohol<br />

and Drug Studies, but the following courses may fulfill<br />

some requirements for the Alcohol/Drug Studies<br />

Certificate at San Bernardino <strong>Valley</strong> <strong>College</strong>: ALDH 125,<br />

ENGL 101, PSYC 101, 108, 125, 133, SOC 101, CMST<br />

109.<br />

ALLIED HEALTH<br />

The Allied Health department offers a variety of<br />

independent, non-program classes in health interest<br />

areas. Some may enable students to work by<br />

completing only one class, such as Medical Insurance,<br />

Certified Nursing Assistant, EMT, or Basic Arrhythmias.<br />

Others support various medical and secretarial<br />

programs or meet general interest needs.<br />

The Paramedic and Medical Assistant programs are<br />

administered by the Allied Health Department, but are<br />

described in their respective sections found<br />

alphabetically in this Catalog.<br />
