Newcomers to Frankfurt will hear
this friendly greeting – meaning
something like “g’day” – everywhere
they go. Frankfurt enjoys the reputation
of an international metropolis;
many of its city districts have nevertheless
retained their small-town
charm. Frankfurt residents love their
hometown. Here, there’s no difference
between local and international,
with the cosmopolitan side of
Frankfurt having become an important
part of the city’s way of life. To-
day, guests from even the most faraway
lands are certain to find a place
serving their favourite meal. And
if they want to try something new,
like a glass of Frankfurt apple wine,
they will find that it tastes great with
every type of cuisine. Here in Frankfurt,
tradition and innovation stand
side by side.
The city itself looks back on a long
The many colourful sides of Frankfurt are not difficult to discover. Here, lush parks and
towering skyscrapers are in close proximity to one another, modern buildings stand alongside
historical ones. Frankfurt, the renowned city of trade fairs, is also a major hub of
green Oases
If you look only at the city’s skyline, you may
easily forget that Frankfurt also has many
green oases. Public parks are all about, such
as Bethmannpark in the Nordend district
with its beautiful Chinese garden. Far Eastern
plants, a pagoda and the so-called ”Bridge of
the Half Boat” make this location an oasis in
the heart of the metropolis. Grüneburgpark
in the Westend, meanwhile, is a popular venue
for summertime concerts and theatre. Its vast
meadows are an invitation to picnickers, ballplayers
and sunbathers. A further attraction is
its Korean garden, a gift to the city from South
Korea on the occasion of the 2005 Book Fair.
The Wallanlagen act as a further recreational
area in downtown Frankfurt. What was formerly
a defensive wall protecting Old Frankfurt
today forms a chain of green areas featuring
ponds, fountains, and playing areas. And for
those who cannot get enough greenery, rest assured
that the parks are only a small part of the
Frankfurt GreenBelt, a recreational area covering
80 sq/km and interlinking the city and the
Rhine-Main region. Frankfurt is working hard
to sustain its natural treasures. To ensure that it
remains a green city, numerous long-term projects,
e.g. in the areas of housing construction
and energy efficiency, are receiving additional
funding from the local government.
digital communication. Whether enjoying life on the banks of the River Main while earning
a living in the city or residing in a village and enjoying urban art museums – Frankfurt
residents appreciate the fact that, here, the distances are short and the discoveries great.
Frankfurt’s famous Museum Embankment
boasts eighteen magnificent museums. Known
as Museum Row, this stretch of prime real estate
is home to a series of stately villas and
elegant glass buildings, each featuring art and
culture from across the globe. The Historical
Museum, for example, brings Frankfurt’s past
back to life. Its new home on the Römerberg
is scheduled to be completed in 2014. The
museum’s older buildings at the Saalhof, now
fully renovated, have
Historical Museum
already opened their
doors to the general
permanent exhibitions
on Stauferian
Film Museum, meanwhile, enables visitors to
become better acquainted with cinematic history
and the many genres and eras of modern
filmmaking. In Frankfurt, a few short steps will
take you from the Old Masters at the Städel
Art Museum to the modern age. The Museum
of Communication presents telegrams sent
are not the only place where you will find a
large number of museums. During a ”Dinner
Whether it’s the Museum of Modern Art, the
Frankfurt possesses a multifaceted collection
to be found anywhere else in Germany.
Construction Projects
Frankfurt continues to grow. More and more
people are moving to the metropolis on the
Main. New residential estates are being built
everywhere. Frankfurt is also rising upwards,
adding tower after tower to its skyline. The
European Central Bank (ECB), for example,
is currently building its new headquarters
on the premises of the city’s former central
market. These brand-new twin towers will not
only be providing the euro watchdogs with
European Central Bank
more space, they will also soon become one
of the new landmarks of the Main metropolis.
The monument-listed market hall will be
architecturally integrated into the new building
complex. Completion is scheduled for
2013, with the ECB planning to move into
the buildings in 2014. As Frankfurt is not only
a financial but also a cultural metropolis, it
is of course no surprise that the city’s artists,
musicians, dancers, and actors require more
room for their cultural endeavours as well. A
visionary project on the grounds of Frankfurt
University’s Bockenheim campus intends to
provide this space. With the College of Music
and Performing Arts set to take up residence
at this location, the new centre will be providing
modern venues for various artistic genres,
at the same time promoting interdisciplinary
collaboration. Both residents and artisans
will be shaping the urban image of this city
district, with new residential and commercial
opportunities for those seeking a vivacious
and culturally pulsating urban quarter offering
a high quality of life. Another major
reconstruction project is currently underway
in the downtown quarter between the Dom
(Cathedral) and the Römer (City Hall). Here,
the so-called ”Old Centre” is being revived,
based on the original plans of what was once
Germany’s largest mediaeval old town until
it was destroyed in 1944. A total of fifteen
buildings are to be reconstructed true to the
originals, the aim being the establishment of
a vibrant quarter with residential units, small
shops, and restaurants, designed much like
its mediaeval predecessor. In Frankfurt, tradition
and innovation are harmoniously juxtaposed,
with history and modernity standing
side by side in the city centre. The new
Old town reconstruction
The Degussa premises
Historical Museum, scheduled for completion
in late 2014, will be as much a part of Frankfurt’s
old town as the office and residential
quarters currently being built on the former
Degussa premises down by the River Main.
Meanwhile, the new European Quarter is
emerging on the site of the former freight
and marshalling yard south of Frankfurt’s
fairgrounds. Over the next few years, offices,
hotels, apartments, and a shopping centre
will be built around the new ”Europe Garden,”
transforming the area in its entirety.
reconstructed true to the originals in the
1980s. To the south, one comes across Alte
whose history dates back to 1322. There is
also plenty to see inside the Römer, such as
the Imperial Room with its portraits of 52
St Nicholas’ Church
Emperor’s Cathedral
a quaint little courtyard. With the
St Paul’s Church
The gothic-style cathedral,
actually named St. Bartholomew’s
Church, had served as the coronation site
of German emperors since the 16th century
and thus earned itself the title of Emperors’
Cathedral. German history was written just a
stone’s throw away at Paulskirche (St Paul’s
Church), where the first German National
Hauptwache
Assembly convened on 18th May 1848, demanding
unity and democracy. Five minutes’
walk from here, on a street called ”Großer
Hirschgraben,” one finds the Goethe-Haus
(Goethe House), where Johann Wolfgang
Goethe spent his childhood and youth. From
here, proceed to the Hauptwache, a beautifully
restored 18th-century building that once
served as the city’s former guard station. From
the Freßgass’, Frankfurt’s popular culinary
”Große Bockenheimer Straße”), you will arrive
at Alte Oper (Old Opera House) and Opernplatz
in 1880 in Neo-Renaissance style, destroyed
during World War II and rebuilt in 1981 with
the support of generous donations.
Be it in water, on land or in the air, children
To do so, one has to travel around a little in
the city. The airport usually comes to people’s
minds first. From the Airport Besucherterrasse
(Airport Visitors’ Terrace), pilots both big
and small can watch the manoeuvres on the
runways and jumbos taking off and landing.
There is also Alter Flugplatz Bonames, a former
airfield, where wild roses and mulleins
push through the cracked tarmac as nature
slowly reclaims the former helicopter landing
strip. The runway, 750 metres long, is still
intact, but these days it is the little tricycle
drivers and bigger inline skaters who roll over
the pavement. The city forest and the Stadtwaldhaus
of Mother Nature to discover the greener sides
of the Main metropolis. Here, young Frankfurt
A small
way through the
its roof. Higher
still is the wooden
Goethe Tower
