Weigel’s ideas on indifference were informed by his reading of two other pre-modern proponents of indifference, Dionysius and Eckhart. The outcome of his engagement with the idea of indifference is his reflections on how decisions about orthodoxy and heresy are made, on what authority, and by whom. Weigel’s writings thus draw attention to the social circumstances in which theological truth is written and proclaimed, and indeed the process by which heresy is discovered and disowned. 264
