• Challenging due to frequent cloud cover, short <str<strong>on</strong>g>growing</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>seas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>, and<br />

scattered vegetati<strong>on</strong> cover<br />

• We need to observe phenology in field <strong>on</strong> a scale that can be<br />

compared with <str<strong>on</strong>g>MODIS</str<strong>on</strong>g> data<br />

• End <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>growing</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>seas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g>: <str<strong>on</strong>g>MODIS</str<strong>on</strong>g> data is not well correlated<br />

with field observati<strong>on</strong>s and more research is needed. So far <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> use<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> combining <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> SWIR and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> red band in an autumn index show<br />

best results.

• Onset <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>growing</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>seas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> shows large variati<strong>on</strong> from year-toyear<br />

• Onset <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>growing</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>seas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> is possible influenced by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> timing <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

melting sea-ice, but more research is needed <strong>on</strong> this<br />

• Onset <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>growing</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>seas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> is well correlated with spring<br />

temperatures and, hence, is a good bio-indicator <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> changing climate<br />

• The length <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>growing</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>seas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> is supposed to highly influence<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong> size <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> most birds and animals <strong>on</strong> <strong>Svalbard</strong>.<br />

• Changes in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> length <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>growing</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>seas<strong>on</strong></str<strong>on</strong>g> is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first step in<br />

changing vegetati<strong>on</strong> cover.<br />
