Dear Member,
Throughout its 60 year history, 98.7WFMT has been dedicated to showcasing the wide variety
of classical music performers and performances around the Chicago area – and bringing these
performances to the widest audience possible. WFMT’s broadcasts have run the gamut from skilled
virtuosos at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Lyric Opera, to the city’s
talented semi-professional and amateur soloists and groups, to its youngest
aspiring musicians. And Chicago’s summer music festivals provide even
more opportunities for local musicians to shine on WFMT. So I hope you’ll
tune in on evenings throughout the summer for our Rush Hour concerts,
Ravinia and Grant Park Music Festival broadcasts, and for WFMT’s live
broadcasts from Make Music Chicago 2012.
There’s plenty of music to enjoy on WTTW11 as well this month – we
bring you a new special from Andrew Lloyd Webber, Love Never Dies;
programs featuring the Beatles tribute band RAIN and Australian Pink
Floyd; and concerts by Les Miserables star Alfie Boe and Yanni protégé
Nathan Pacheco. For something entirely different, we explore Rick Steves’ Hidden Europe; Ed Slott
helps you plan for the future with Retirement Rescue!; the popular Britcom Doc Martin returns with
new episodes; and we mark Pride Month with a variety of relevant programs, including Independent
Lens: We Were Here and A Place to Live: Triangle Square.
On WFMT, we’ll present live broadcasts all day from Make Music Chicago 2012 from venues citywide
on Thursday, June 21, the first full day of summer. Originating in Paris as Fête de la Musique, this
musical holiday for all ages and all genres now takes place in 110 countries and 460 cities around the
world. We’re also pleased to present another season of Rush Hour Concerts, broadcast live from St.
James Cathedral beginning Tuesday, June 5, at 5:45 pm. And our Matthew Bucksbaum Family Lyric
Opera Broadcasts continue on Saturdays at noon with The Magic Flute, Ariadne auf Naxos, Show
Boat, Rinaldo, and Aida.
As always, you can find more program information, exclusive web content, and audio and video
streaming on wttw.com and wfmt.com. And your support is critical to making all of this happen every
month throughout the year. We hope you will continue to support us in the days to come through
our Fiscal Year End appeal.
Sincerely,
Dan Schmidt
$400,000 to $600,000.
8:00 Queen Victoria’s Empire:
The Moral Crusade/The
Scramble for Africa (Parts 3
and 4 of 4) By 1861, Britain
is the wealthiest and most
powerful nation on earth.
However, the death of Prince
Albert weakens Victoria, and
many of his political ideals
fade in importance. David
Livingstone’s explorations of
the African interior fascinate
the British public. Disraeli and
Gladstone battle for control
of the British government
and debate the course of
empire. The purchase of the
Suez Canal solidifies British
presence in the Middle East,
igniting a stampede for the
colonization of Africa. When
the Canal is threatened by
a holy war in the Sudan,
General Charles Gordon,
killed by the rebels, becomes
an “imperial martyr.” Cecil
Rhodes prospects diamond
deposits in southern Africa
and asserts British control
in the region. However, as
Victoria celebrates her
Diamond Jubilee, the empire
is on the verge of its darkest
hours. The Boer War leads to
devastating losses and a reassessment
of British purpose.
Finally, in 1901, the death
of Queen Victoria marks the
end of an extraordinary era.
was contaminated with HIV
In the Spotlight
POV: Granito –
How to Nail a Dictator
In 1982, a young first-time filmmaker,
Pamela Yates, used her seeming
naiveté to gain unprecedented access
to Ríos Montt, his generals and leftist
guerrillas waging a clandestine war
deep in the mountains. The resulting
film, When the Mountains Tremble
(1983) revealed that the Guatemalan
army was killing Mayan civilians. As
Yates notes in her extraordinary followup,
Granito: How to Nail a Dictator,
“Guatemala … never let me go.” When
the Mountains Tremble had re-entered
her life 30 years later when a Spanish
lawyer investigating the Ríos Montt
regime asked for her help. She believed
her first film and its outtakes just might
contain evidence to bring charges of
genocide under international law.
death of a boy who was also
a girl, and the essentially
spiritual nature of gender.
10:30 POV: Granito – How to Nail
a Dictator In a stunning
milestone for justice in Central
America, a Guatemalan court
recently charged former
dictator Efrain Rios Montt with
genocide for his brutal war
against the country’s Mayan
people in the 1980s. Pamela
Yates’ 1983 documentary,
When the Mountains Tremble,
provided key evidence for
bringing the indictment. This
is the story of how a film,
aiding a new generation
of human rights activists,
became a granito – a tiny
grain of sand – that helped
tip the scales of justice.
Leon Fleisher
Artist of the Month
Pianist Leon Fleisher
A native of San Francisco, a
teenage piano prodigy, and winner
of the prestigious Queen Elisabeth
of Belgium competition, Fleisher
performed and recorded extensively
during the 1950s, notably with
George Szell and the Cleveland
Orchestra. A condition called focal
dystonia deprived him of the use
of his right hand, after which he
turned to teaching, conducting, and
exploring the repertory for lefthand
piano. In the early years of
this century, Fleisher recovered the
use of his right hand and has made
several recent recordings, including
one called Two Hands. He visits the
Ravinia Festival for a Martin Theatre
chamber-music concert July 21.
Philip Glass
John Adams and the
LA Philharmonic
Perform Philip Glass
In early April the Los Angeles
Philharmonic gave the West Coast
premiere of Symphony #9 by
Philip Glass, under the direction of
John Adams. Writing for Variety’s
International Music Reviews, Richard
Ginell commented: “Anyone seeking
a stylistic breakthrough will not find it
here, for Glass sticks resolutely with
the obsessively repeating arpeggios,
motorized rhythms, brooding
minor-key passages, occasional
touches of South Asian-influenced
percussion, and the other trademarks
that he recycles from piece to piece.
What does come through most
powerfully is a hard-won sense of
assurance and command – the way
Glass patiently gathers and builds
his forces into massive waves of
symphonic sound, occasionally
letting fly a few ravishing harmonies,
before they subside….Disney Hall’s
transparent acoustics were a big
help in clarifying the textures.” The
concert is part of our June sequence
of LA Philharmonic broadcasts.
Make Music Chicago
Make Music Chicago is a live, oneday
music festival on the first day of
summer that celebrates the ability of
everyone to make music. On June
21, people of all ages, music of all
genres, amateurs, professionals, and
marquee artists will gather throughout
the day in Chicago area public spaces
to engage in spontaneous music
making. WFMT will bring you this
day of exciting and diverse music
starting on Thurday morning and
continuing through 9:00 pm. With
stops from Evanston to Michigan
Avenue to Hyde Park, WFMT will
feature classical music, folk, jazz,
and beyond...played by performers
from around the city and around
the world. Between more traditional
concert venues, our roving reporters
will be checking in throughout the
day for whatever surprises arise
during this day of eclectic, impromptu
music-making. And be sure to tune
in for the grand finale from St. James
Cathedral from 6:00 to 9:00 pm for
singers from the Ryan Opera Center,
3rd Coast Percussion, the 5th House
