1. Progeny
1.1. Children in Vedic Culture
In the Vedic tradition it is said that marriage and children are the blessing of Śīva,
Brahmā gives Ayus (longevity) and Viṣṇu gives dhanam (wealth).
Among the houses (bhavas) 5th house is related to children and being the 11th
from 7th indicates the result of sexual intercourse.
Another view is that marriage and children are said to be the means to fulfill the
debts to ancestors as one of the three types of debts (pitririna, devarina, rishirina;
Taittiriya Upanisad).
From this concept comes the principle of Upapada (ārūḍha of the 12th house; 12th
house represents rina) and 9th from Upapada shows children per Śri Parāśara
Muni 1 .
The kāraka for children is Jupiter. Ability for producing children is granted to
Shukra and dynasty is indicated by the Surya. The sign of the 5th house in natural
zodiac is Siṁha (Leo) with lord Sun showing creative power as the function of the
Surya. The specific creative power delegated for producing babies is controlled by
Shukra. Every graha represents particular dhatu and Shukra represents ojas and
sperms.
The affliction of these karakas leads to inauspicious events in life
related to progeny. In the analysis of progeny we have to focus both on
Jupiter and Shukra. Agni grahas (Surya, Mars and Ketū) are enemy of
the watery grahas and can show miscarriagies when conjoined the 5th
lord and in bad placement. In the examples we will focus on Guru,
Shukra, 5th lord and 5th house.
dangerous for children’s health and life.
1.2. Various circumstences related to progeny
1.2.1. Health of children
We can always examine the health of any person related to bhāva in the chart by
analysing the dispositor of particular lord of the bhāva. The dispositor of the 5th lord
will show general health of the children. Dispositor is planet which lords the sign in
which the other lord is placed. For example if Lagna lord is in Meṣa (Aries), then
Maṅgala becomes the dispositor of Lagna
lord, because Managala lords Meṣa (Aries).
children.
Jupiter is lagna lord in 7th house with Venus, so Venus dictated his life (also
those born in Jyestha Nakśatra).
5th lord is Maṅgala in 6th house with 12th lord
Ketū (lording Vrscika rāśi), so badly placed as 6th is
more important the 5th lord is in 12th (loss/absence)
1.6. Basics discussed in the lecture
1.6.1. Arudha
Ārūḍha calculation: Count the number of bhavas from the bhāva to the lord,
count the same number from the lord. If the lord is in 2nd house from lagna, then
count the same distance (two) from the 2nd house, and you will arrive at 3rd house,
as 2nd from 2nd house is 3rd. The exception is: the ārūḍha represnets maya therefore
cannot occupy 1st and 7th houses which are said to be satya pitha. If the ārūḍha falls
on 1st or 7th then count the 10th from the particular position. For example, lagna lord
in 4th house gives the ārūḍha to 7th house as if we count 4th from 4th we will arrive
at 7th. The 7th however is satya pitha bhāva and the ārūḍha will be moved to 10th
from the 7th which is 4th house. To be able to calculate ārūḍha for all houses we need
to treat particular house as reference point and apply the same rules.
1.6.2. Bhāva, Bhavesa, Kāraka
The most important prinicple to analyse success of any area of life is to analyse
the bhāva (house), bhavesa (lord of the house) and naisargika kāraka (significator).
1.6.2.1. Bhāva
Bhāva, the house shows the sphere of our life like relationships, finances,
work, home, family, losses, gains. All occurences and various activities are grouped
in various placement around the zodiac called chakra.
Bhava means mood/disposition and therefore it shows our attitude towards
particular activity. For example planet in seventh house will show how we view our
relationship and represents our preferences.
Planets in bhava besides disposition shows what is presented by God to the
native and what is the reaction of the native or influence on social standing is
analyzed by its placement from Arudha lagna.
Strength of the bhāva: In astrology we measure the strength and affliction of the
bhāva, bhavesa and kāraka. Bhāva may turn inauspicious when it’s lord is weak
(dīptādi avasthā), it has low bhāva bala, it is aspected, has papakartari yoga or
conjoined by malefics. In the same way, bhāva with strong bhāva bala, aspected,
conjoined or subhakartari by benefics with strong lord, placed in good house is
strong. If the lord is wellplaced (kendra, trikoṇa) from bhāva then it will support the
activity represented by the bhāva, but if the lord is wellplaced from Lagna it will turn
positive for the native, altough the elements represented by bhāva may suffer.
In the chart, 5th house shows children, being in 11th house from 7th house shows
the fruits of marriage. Being the 5th from Lagna shows those who come after us,
forming our future as the 9th house is showing our ancestors and Gurus. In the stri
jataka 11 which is the female chart the 9th house shows children. 6th therefore is the
maraka to children and any connection of 5th and 6th brings the problem to the
progeny.
1.6.2.2. Bhavesa
The lord of the house is called Bhavesa from Bhāva (house) and Isa (the lord).
In Jyotiṣa (Vedic Astrology) in every house there is one sign. The lordship of bhāva is
based on the sign occupying the bhāva. If 5th house is Siṁha (Leo) then its lord is Sun
as Sun is lording the Leo.
The strength of the planet will have direct influence over the bhāva lorded by
it. If Mars is weak (like in debilitation sign – Cancer) then also bhavas in which Aries
and Scorpio is, will suffer. Bhavesa is inauspicious when: it is weak or afflicted.
Strength of bhavesa (lord) and kāraka (significator) should be examined both
in Rāśi and Navāṁśa.
Inauspiciousness of lord takes place when:

It is weak due to position in the sign in Rāśi or Navāṁśa (refer to table with
Dīptādi Avasthā)
It is afflicted due to either yuti, dṛṣṭi or papakartari of malefics
It is in inauspicious house like dusthāna (6th, 8th or 12th)
Other affliction due to yogas, combustions and placement from other elements
1.6.2.3. Karaka
The kāraka shows the hand of the God and actual sum of experiences related to
the signification of the graha. The position of bhāva and bhāva lord is vital when
examined from kāraka.
Charakaraka is the third type of kāraka (8-charakaraka scheme). They represent
the sphere of life from the perspective of our soul. Just like Ātmakāraka shows us,
Darakaraka shows spouse from view of our soul etc. In this scheme Putrakaraka
shows children. Their role ascribed to particular grahas is based on the maturity of
degrees. The planet with highest degree is the Ātmakāraka. Nodes degrees should be
calculated in reverse per the Jaimini Sutras. In this order the Putrakaraka (PK) is the
last but one degree-wise.
