Heartbeat INDIAN HILLS COMMUNITY CHURCH May 12, 2013 Mothers Are God’s Blessing Welcome to Indian Hills and the worship of our Lord and Savior, Christ Jesus. We’re glad you’re here and invite you to return tonight for our evening service beginning at 6 p.m. Today is Mother’s Day, a day set aside to honor our mothers. As we think about our mothers and look back over the years, we are reminded how much Mother loved us. Mother’s love was profound, which was demonstrated in the sacrifices she made for us each day. Her love was unconditional; it didn’t end when we were disobedient or when we disappointed her. Mother disciplined us when we needed it, proving that her love was tough. Like all of us, Mother wasn’t perfect, but her love for us was genuine. Each mother has a unique way about her and is specially chosen by God. As we reflect on the contribution she has made in our lives, we must also thank God for His provision of this woman, our mother. SUNDAY MORNING
Children’s
Ministry
Our kindergarten through fifth
grade students are studying the
same Scripture each week.
Sunday School
Our first through fifth grade
students examined Esther 4–6
and learned about God thwarting
Haman.
Children’s Church
Our children studied Nehemiah
1–7 and learned about God using
Nehemiah to rebuild Jerusalem’s
wall. The core truth we
hope the children understood is
to use God’s strength to accomplish
His will.
Parental
Reinforcement
As you talk with your children, be
sure to ask them about what they
learned today in Sunday School
and Children’s Church. It will
be good for them to review the
truths they studied and it will
stretch their memories as they
verbalize the biblical account and
principle they learned.
Vicki Nogle was baptized April
28, 2013
Vicki Nogle has attended
Indian Hills since the end of
2011. She jumps right into her
testimony, “All praise and glory
to God for saving me shortly
after my 60th birthday! In His
love and mercy He saved me in
His timing and by His method
unique to me.
“Why God saved me by
His grace still overwhelms me.
First of all, I’m overwhelmed
because of the enormity of my
sins having lived my whole life
a slave to sin with Satan as my
master. Looking back at my
life before grace, I realize that if
you could freeze any moment
in my life, you would find many
of the deeds of the flesh that are
listed in the Scriptures occurring
simultaneously. This was
my life until God in His great
love and mercy saved me.
“How He saved me was
clear after I accepted Jesus
Christ as my Lord and Savior.
My sister, Jan, sent me a Mac-
Arthur Study Bible in October
2011. I began reading various
parts of the Bible in the Old
and New Testaments. I was
thrilled and amazed that what I
was reading made sense to me
for the very first time! God’s
Holy Spirit was drawing me to
salvation, and I embraced it. At
some point during this time, I
believed that I was a sinner and
God’s plan of salvation is in the
finished work of His Son, Jesus
Christ my Lord and Savior.
When I believed, I called my
sister in TN. She told me that
she and many believers in her
church had been praying for
my salvation for many years.
“There have been many
changes in my life, small and
big, since God bestowed His
grace on me, and He has been
with me through them all. A
believer at my sister’s church
recommended that I go to Indian
Hills and said that he knew
someone who would be willing
to go with me. I waited for a
few weeks but didn’t hear from
that person. I couldn’t wait any
longer and went by myself. I
know that God not only saved
me, but He also brought me
to this church. God has used
many believers in this body to
help me through those initial
changes following my salvation
and many more believers
since to teach me, inspire me,
patiently answer my questions,
and guide me back with love
and compassion when I wander
from my walk with the Lord. I
am grateful beyond words.
“God has a purpose for redeeming
such a sinner like me.
I pray to obey, serve, and praise
our God every one of the remaining
days He has given me
on this earth. And I pray that
my testimony will encourage
you to continue praying for the
salvation of loved ones, especially
if you have been praying
for a long time. I am proof that
nothing is impossible for our
mighty God!”
“Charm is deceitful
and beauty is vain,
but a woman who fears
the Lord, she shall be
praised ” (Proverbs
31:30).
Joel Pelton was baptized April
28, 2013
Joel is married to Rachelle,
and they have a daughter,
Jaemily, and a son on the way.
His parents are Jim and Sandy
Pelton and he has a number of
other family members at Indian
Hills.
Joel has grown up at Indian
Hills and works in the technology
center for the Nebraska
legislature. He and Rachelle are
involved in the EDGE ministry.
Joel says, “I remember
Boys of Faith camp my sixth
grade year when Charlie Weber
taught on hell. I remember
being very uncertain and full of
doubt about my future destiny.
It was that very same evening
that I wondered, ‘Would I go to
hell if I died?’ For the first time
I realized and believed the reality
of hell and knew I needed
the Savior. I needed to serve
my Savior and stop living life to
please my parents, friends, and
family. I asked for forgiveness
of my sins through Jesus’ death
on the cross. It was no longer
just a “Bible story” in my mind.
I had never really had a
problem with obedience or
living a good life as I was a kid,
but I noticed a change in my
motives. I was obeying to please
God, and my actions were motivated
by eternity.”
Sam Bledsoe was baptized April
28, 2013
Sam grew up in a small
town outside of West Lafayette,
Indiana in a family of six
with an older brother and two
younger sisters.
He is pursuing a master’s
degree in agronomy at UNL
and has been attending Indian
Hills for about a year. He is
a part of the Alpha Omega
college group, lives in the AO
house, and plays in the church
orchestra.
Sam says, “I was raised in a
Christian home and professed
to be a Christian all my life. In
my heart I knew the truth of
Christ’s salvation, but my faith
was untested, unchallenged,
and not my own. During my
undergraduate career, I strayed
from the faith, rarely attending
church or spending time in the
Word. During this time my
heart was hardened to the conviction
of sin, and I gave into
the ways and thinking of the
world around me. All the while
I claimed to be a Christian even
though there was little evidence
to support this claim.
“After I finished my undergraduate
degree at Purdue, God
convicted my heart that I was
living a hypocritical life and
that my life was one of disobedience
and rebellion. I was a
child of wrath, and it became
clear to me that faith without
works is not saving faith at all.
“The transition was gradual,
but I began to understand how
much I needed Jesus as the center
of my life and as my Lord
and Savior. God showed me
that the only way forward was
through renouncing the sinful
ways of my former self and
to not only accept the free gift
of salvation, but to allow Jesus
to work in my heart, and only
then could good works flow.
“My life is now forever
changed. I still feel the pull of
sin, but my confidence is in Jesus
as I strive daily to model my
life after Christ as I continue to
grow in the faith and experience
the joy and blessings of
God’s grace and provision.”
Rachelle Pelton was baptized
April 28, 2013
Rachelle is married to Joel
Pelton, and they have a daughter,
Jaemily and are expecting a
son in June. She is the daughter
of Mike Sheets and Jodi Sheets
and the sister of Nathan Sheets
and Alyssa Pelton.
Rachelle has grown up at
Indian Hills and is a homemaker
and serves in the church
choir and the EDGE ministry.
Rachelle says, “One night
in AWANA our leader spoke
about how terrible hell was. I
came home worried and wanted
to be sure that I was going
to heaven. So I asked my dad
to pray with me to make sure.
I never questioned anything
that the Bible said or anything
that I was taught at church, but
it wasn’t until my high school
years that I started having a
personal relationship with God.
“Then, He put trials in my
life that made me realize how
much I needed Him and how I
wasn’t striving for a life led by
Him as I should. God used the
trials to bring me closer to Him
and help me realize what living
my life for Him should really be
like—always pleasing Him.”
Happy Mother’s Day
The Lord has generously
blessed this fellowship of believers
with many godly mothers
that have dedicated their
lives to serving and caring for
others. Their devotion to God is
modeled in their daily lives and
is a testimony of God’s grace
year after year. Surely, living
out one’s faith is the best gift a
mother could give her children,
and we are blessed to have
many of these extraordinary
ladies in our church. God bless
