4.7. Mechanical Biological Treatment technology<br />

4.7.1. Materials recovery facility<br />

An MRF is a facility that separates the mixed <strong>waste</strong> fracti<strong>on</strong> into <strong>waste</strong> streams<br />

ready to be recycled with <strong>on</strong>e of the methods used for recycling such as<br />

(Composting, Anaerobic Digesti<strong>on</strong>, etc). There are two types of these facilities<br />

1) The clean MRF <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2) The dirty MRF.<br />

Clean MRF<br />

There are many types of clean MRFS (Figure 25.) but the basic principle is that<br />

the recyclable (mixed) materials (e.g. paper, glass, etc) are separated into <strong>waste</strong><br />

streams, shredded <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> packaged into boxes, ready for the final process which<br />

shall be recycling. (Wastesum.,2010)<br />
