4.6.7. Optical Sorting<br />

Optical sorting is relatively new method that is applied for MSW sorting.<br />

During this process a light source, typically infrared (IR) or near-infrared (NIR),<br />

illuminates materials (mixed MSW) moving <strong>on</strong> a c<strong>on</strong>veyor belt. Multiple<br />

sensors analyze the spectral signal of the reflected light, which is unique for<br />

different materials. The spectral (or multispectral or hyperspectral) signal is<br />

c<strong>on</strong>verted to a visual image using colors or patterns <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the object’s visual<br />

image is used to identify the physical locati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> makeup of the object.<br />

Typically, hundreds of separate jets of air from a nozzle then push different<br />

items into separate bins as shown in Figure 24.<br />
