acceptable range, but reduce the overall quantity of <strong>waste</strong> available for<br />

processing. Reducti<strong>on</strong> in either the calorific value or quantity of <strong>waste</strong><br />

c<strong>on</strong>sumed would reduce the amount of energy recovered, the sale of which<br />

provides <strong>on</strong>e of the main income streams (al<strong>on</strong>g with the disposal fee) of the<br />

incinerator. Reducti<strong>on</strong>s in the sales value of energy would then feed through<br />

into higher disposal charges for the <strong>waste</strong>.<br />

3.2.3. Types of incinerators<br />

There are various types of incinerators (Figure.15): Moving grate, fixed grate,<br />

rotary-kiln, fluidized bed, etc (Fig.).<br />

Grate furnaces<br />

Grate furnace incinerators (Figure 16.) are by far the most comm<strong>on</strong> technology<br />

for the incinerati<strong>on</strong> of MSW. They perform the so-called mass burn which<br />

requires minimal pre-processing (such as sizing, shredding, etc.) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> occurs in<br />

facilities of varying size (from 50 to more than 2000 t<strong>on</strong>s of <strong>waste</strong> per day)<br />

usually fed c<strong>on</strong>tinuously. The <strong>waste</strong> streams they receive are not always very<br />

c<strong>on</strong>sistent.
