2.1.3. Composting Technologies<br />

Composting provides the humus <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> nutrients essential for a healthy soil. By<br />

returning compost to the soil, the soil is rebuilt <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> maintained for sustainable<br />

producti<strong>on</strong>. There are various methods <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> equipment available for the<br />

composting process depending <strong>on</strong> the kind of material <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the time needed for<br />

composting process. The general experience in composting is that oxygen<br />

supply is maybe the most important factor, <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> this is the reas<strong>on</strong> why the<br />

equipment tends to c<strong>on</strong>centrate <strong>on</strong> the most efficient transfer of oxygen to all<br />

parts of the composting material because without it no compost process may<br />

occur. (Jorgensen et al., 1981,).<br />

The most comm<strong>on</strong> composting technologies (figure 3.) are:<br />
