situated in the east of the county. The populati<strong>on</strong> of the county is (311000.,2008<br />

statistics) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the density of the populati<strong>on</strong> is (62 /km 2 ). (Wikipedia.,2010)<br />

Ten years ago, Northumberl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> sent 96% of its mixed <strong>waste</strong> to l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>fill <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong>ly<br />

about 3% % of residents received a kerbside recycling service. Only six<br />

Household Waste Recovery Centres (HWRCs) were provided for the whole of<br />

Northumberl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Ten years after, Northumberl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> sends to l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>fill <strong>on</strong>ly 12 %<br />

of <strong>household</strong> <strong>waste</strong> while 100% of <strong>household</strong>s receive a kerbside recycling<br />

service. Thirteen state of the art HWRCs recycle 64% of the <strong>waste</strong> delivered to<br />

them while great investments in energy from <strong>waste</strong> plants <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> recycling<br />

facilities, prevent <strong>waste</strong> from been buried to the l<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>fills.<br />

In Northumberl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> operates a composting scheme for <strong>household</strong> garden <strong>waste</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> kitchen <strong>waste</strong>. Any<strong>on</strong>e can compost garden <strong>waste</strong> at home by<br />

purchasing a home compost bin. This is the most envir<strong>on</strong>mentally sustainable<br />

opti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> it provides each <strong>on</strong>e of the civilians their own supply of compost.<br />

The compost bins can be ordered for home delivery or pick-up <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> are available in<br />

two sizes:<br />

'Garden King' 220 liter home composter at £21<br />

'Garden King' 330 liter home composter at £23<br />

Residents can save the delivery charge by buying a voucher which enables<br />

them to pick up a 330 liter bin from their chosen <strong>household</strong> <strong>waste</strong> recovery<br />

centre, at a cost of £16.50.<br />

Garden <strong>waste</strong> can also be transported by some<strong>on</strong>e to the nearest Household<br />

Waste Recovery Centre. There is no charge for the use of these facilities.<br />

There are 13 Household Waste Recovery Centers (HWRCs) across the county of<br />

Northumberl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>. They are provided in order that Northumberl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

residents may reuse, recycle, compost or dispose of their own <strong>household</strong> <strong>waste</strong><br />

free of charge. (Northumberl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> County Council.,2010)<br />

Finally, the council arranges to collect the garden <strong>waste</strong> from the edge of<br />

every<strong>on</strong>e’s property. Kerbside collecti<strong>on</strong>s (figure.5) from a wheeled bin is now<br />

the <strong>on</strong>ly opti<strong>on</strong> for garden <strong>waste</strong> collecti<strong>on</strong> in Northumberl<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>. Bags are not<br />

used anymore for health <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> safety reas<strong>on</strong>s. The annual charge for this service<br />

is £20. The biodegradable <strong>waste</strong> is been collected from early March until late<br />

November. In the winter no collecti<strong>on</strong> takes place because of the limited<br />

amount of material available which results in high collecti<strong>on</strong> costs. The
