Hampshire’s populati<strong>on</strong> of 1.64 milli<strong>on</strong> comprised around 738,500 <strong>household</strong>s<br />

in 2008/9. The Project Integra collecti<strong>on</strong> authorities retain the freedom to<br />

decide <strong>on</strong> the details of the collecti<strong>on</strong> services they provide to their residents –<br />

st<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g>ardized approaches <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> protocols are used <strong>on</strong>ly where necessary for the<br />

efficient functi<strong>on</strong>ing of the collective infrastructure:<br />

All authorities collect the same combinati<strong>on</strong> of recyclable materials comingled<br />

at the kerbside (paper <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> cardboard, cans <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> tins, plastic<br />

bottles). Coverage of <strong>household</strong>s by this key service is now 98%;<br />

The majority of authorities provide a collecti<strong>on</strong> of garden <strong>waste</strong> for<br />

composting;<br />

Glass is collected through bottle banks by all authorities <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> at the<br />

kerbside by four;<br />

Six authorities provide commercial <strong>waste</strong> collecti<strong>on</strong>s to local businesses.<br />

In additi<strong>on</strong> to the kerbside collecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other services provided by the<br />

collecti<strong>on</strong> authorities, the disposal authorities provide 26 Household Waste<br />

Recycling Centers (HWRCs) which accept a wide range of materials for reuse,<br />

recycling, composting or disposal.<br />

Additi<strong>on</strong>al collecti<strong>on</strong> arrangements are made with <strong>household</strong>s for bulky<br />

<strong>household</strong> <strong>waste</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> healthcare <strong>waste</strong>. Cleansing services provided by the<br />

authorities include litter bins, street cleaning, removal of litter, graffiti,<br />

ab<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><strong>on</strong>ed vehicles <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> fly tipping – the resulting <strong>waste</strong> is also managed<br />

through the collective infrastructure. ( Hampshire County council., 2009)<br />

The quantities of <strong>waste</strong> composted during the integra project are shown in<br />

(figure 51.)
