8.4.5. The Dåva district heating <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> power stati<strong>on</strong> in Sweden (Umeå).<br />

The Dåva plant (Picture 45.) generates heat <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> electricity by burning presorted<br />

<strong>waste</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> residues from the wood products manufacturing industry –chiefly<br />

biofuel. The efficiency is fully 99.5% thanks to effective recovery of excess heat<br />

from power generati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> in flue gases.<br />

Located at Dåvamyran, four kilometers outside the city, the new plant has a<br />

much smaller impact <strong>on</strong> the envir<strong>on</strong>ment than the old <strong>on</strong>e, not least because a<br />

more efficient cleaning system has been added to the remaining old steam<br />

generator. What is more, the c<strong>on</strong>tent of oil in the fuel mix has been greatly<br />

reduced. The new facility offered an opportunity to exp<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> the Umeå district<br />

heating network, thus helping minimize the c<strong>on</strong>sumpti<strong>on</strong> of high-priced<br />

electricity.<br />

The plant c<strong>on</strong>sists of <strong>on</strong>e process incorporating a grate combusti<strong>on</strong> system, a<br />

steam generator, a fabric filter, a flue gas treatment system with c<strong>on</strong>densati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a <strong>waste</strong>water treatment system. The design will readily lend itself to<br />

expansi<strong>on</strong> with a sec<strong>on</strong>d train. (Figure 46) presents schematically the operati<strong>on</strong><br />

of the Dåva plant.<br />
