INTRODUCTION
This report represents an extensive literature <strong>and</strong> World Wide Web review on
the existing methods, of household waste management <strong>and</strong> treatment. Starting
with a brief report on the existing European Union legislative framework,
priorities <strong>and</strong> principles, of the EU environmental policy on the management
<strong>and</strong> treatment of biodegradable waste, the most prominent success methods on
advanced household organic waste treatment applied in EU countries are
briefly reported, while existing household biodegradable solid waste
management <strong>and</strong> treatment techniques (including large scale driers) applied at
a national <strong>and</strong> European level are reported.
Biodegradable waste fraction can be treated as a separate fraction or as part of
the mixed MSW stream. This type of waste can be source separated <strong>and</strong> treated
with the already developed methods of Composting <strong>and</strong> Anaerobic Digestion or
as part of the mixed waste stream by thermal treatment <strong>and</strong> l<strong>and</strong>fill method. In
household level Composting <strong>and</strong> Small Scale (AD) are mainly used for the
treatment of biodegradable waste.
