7.3. Best <str<strong>on</strong>g>practices</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

7.3.1. The sludge <strong>waste</strong>water treatment <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> sludge drying plant in<br />

Heimertingen/Memmingen<br />

Heimertingen is a municipality in the district of Unterallgäu in Bavaria very<br />

close to Memmingen. Memmingen is a town in the Bavarian administrative<br />

regi<strong>on</strong> of Swabia in Germany. It is the central ec<strong>on</strong>omic, educati<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

administrative centre in the Danube-Iller regi<strong>on</strong>.<br />

Heimertingen <strong>waste</strong>water treatment facility, is located in Memmingen<br />

approximately 20 minutes drive from the main train stati<strong>on</strong> in Memmingen.<br />

The facility is covered with very tall trees all around <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> it is placed in a spot<br />

away from residences (the first residence is located approximately 3 kilometers<br />

of the facility).<br />

It is a sewage treatment facility that treats <strong>waste</strong>water from the city of<br />

Memmingen <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> suburbs. The facility has a primary treatment tank, a<br />

nitrificati<strong>on</strong> system, a denitrificati<strong>on</strong> system <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> a phosphorous removal<br />

system. The sewage goes to the sec<strong>on</strong>dary treatment tank where the separati<strong>on</strong><br />

between the sludge <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> water takes place. After the separati<strong>on</strong> process ,the<br />

sewage sludge is taken to a sludge drier operating inside the facilities.<br />

The sludge drier operating in the facilities, is manufactured by the «ANDRITZ<br />

GROUP» which is a manufactory company for customized plant, systems <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

services for hydropower, pulp <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> paper, steel <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> other specialized industries<br />

(solid/liquid separati<strong>on</strong>, feed <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> biofuel).<br />

Sewage sludge from the Wastewater treatment plant is treated in the following<br />

steps after digesti<strong>on</strong> process:<br />

‣ dewatered by centrifuges to a dry substance c<strong>on</strong>tent of > 28%<br />

‣ pumped after dewatering directly into a dosing silo<br />

‣ pumped from the dosing silo (capacity 50 m 3 ) directly into the Fluid bed<br />

Dryer<br />

‣ dispersed <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> dried in the fluid bed to a dry substance c<strong>on</strong>tent of > 90%<br />

‣ fed to a product silo (capacity 100 m3) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> stored for truck loading<br />

Thermal energy for the drying process is generated by burning Biogas which is<br />

produced by an anaerobic digester (Picture 16.). operating in the sewage sludge<br />

facilities or if necessary oil in a Boiler. Usually from M<strong>on</strong>day-Friday the energy<br />

is produced by burning biogas <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> during the weekend or in case some<br />

malfuncti<strong>on</strong> occurs to the anaerobic digester, a thermal oil method is used.
