6.4.4. The Cupello composting scheme<br />

Cupello is a small town located in the Abruzzo regi<strong>on</strong> of southern Italy. The<br />

municipality populati<strong>on</strong> is approximately 4 695 inhabitants <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> covers an area<br />

of 48 km 2 . The local Municipality of Cupello manages the composting<br />

management sceme described in this secti<strong>on</strong>.(Success stories <strong>on</strong> composting<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> separate collecti<strong>on</strong>., 2000)<br />

The Cupello composting scheme began to operate in 1998. Until then, <strong>on</strong>ly 1%<br />

of the biodegradable <strong>household</strong> <strong>waste</strong> was collected. The scheme added a<br />

totally different way of bio <strong>waste</strong> treatment in this small city. The management<br />

plan included of the following acti<strong>on</strong>s:<br />
