Foundation supports activities that promote the
general health and welfare of the communities
served by McLaren Regional Medical Center.

renovation and expansion project to serve the
community with the best health care possible
by providing: expanded Cancer Care services;
renovated Emergency Services, including the
lifesaving, rapid response Lifenet technology;
additional Cardiac Care Services including two
new Open-Heart Surgery Suites and two new
Cardiac Catheterization Labs.

Preserving the McLaren legacy.
The strong tradition of support from the people
of our community has played a major role in
the development of McLaren Regional Medical
Center from a 10-bed maternity hospital in
1917 to mid-Michigan’s premier health care
provider. With a deep belief in McLaren, and a
commitment to enhancing the quality of life for
our patients and their families, our benefactors
have enabled us to purchase advanced medical
equipment and technology, build new medical
facilities, fund medical research and training,
and support the addition of new services that
have saved lives and improved the health
and well-being of thousands of people in our
community.
In recent years, the pressures facing health
care providers have been intense. As demands
for the newest technology and increased levels
of service continue to grow, reimbursement
for services provided continue to shrink.
The costs of retaining and attracting highly
skilled medical staff, nurses, therapists and
other professional staff continue to be a
challenge as we face the reality of physician
and nursing shortages across the country. In
our commitment to provide the highest quality
treatment and patient-focused care, we must
continue to develop excellent, innovative and
cost-efficient services, attract the highest skilled
professionals, and utilize the most advanced
technology available.
Philanthropy is needed today at McLaren
Regional Medical Center as much or more than
it was needed in 1917, when the medical center
was founded by community-minded individuals.
We are grateful to our generous donors, for it
is only through their support that we are able to
continue our mission of improving the health of
our community. Giving to McLaren truly does
make a difference.
Each donor has his or her own, personal reason
for giving. It may be an acknowledgement of
gratitude for the excellent care received by
the donor or a loved one. It may be the strong
desire to ensure that superior medical care is
available to all members of the community. It
may be an intense interest in research; in being
part of finding a cure for a particular disease,
or developing a new treatment that may save
lives. It may be a way to commemorate the life
of a loved one or celebrate a special event.

Michael Rachor, founder of The Rachor Family
Foundation, Ltd., firmly believes that the surest
way to achieve prosperity is through education.
Rachor, a lifelong Flint resident and financial
professional, attributes his success, in great
part, to his college education. The Rachor
Family Foundation, Ltd. is now investing in
people. McLaren is pleased to be working with
the Rachor Family Foundation, Ltd. to award
honorary scholarships to local nursing students.
Each of the five scholarships is named in honor
of an outstanding McLaren nurse or nurse aide
who exemplifies excellence in nursing and
serves as an inspiration to those who follow in
their footsteps.
A lack of time and money are genuine obstacles
that can make college out of reach for anyone,
but especially for those who are raising a
family. Stacey Braden-Brown is an example
of someone who faced and overcame these
challenges to reach her goal of becoming a
registered nurse. This determination, along
with her compassion as a caregiver, led to her
distinction as a Rachor Family Foundation, Ltd.
scholarship honoree.
Brown began her nursing career in her early
twenties as a single mother taking care of
her three ailing grandparents. Through this
experience, Brown found great joy in caring for
people of all ages. She obtained training and
worked as a nurse aide in addition to waitressing
at a local restaurant. With much determination
and support from her family, Brown continued
working two jobs while taking care of her
young daughter and grandparents. After six
years of diligent work, she graduated with a
3.6 cumulative grade point average to obtain
her Associates Degree in Nursing. She is now
a registered nurse working at McLaren caring
for patients at the Specialty Center. Brown
will be the first to tell you that she does not
consider herself worthy of having a scholarship
in her name. However, The Rachor Family
Foundation, Ltd. and the McLaren Foundation
think otherwise. Her story, in addition to the

financial gift, may give hope to students who find
themselves at the same starting point as Brown
and encourage them to work hard to complete
their own education.
The Stacey Braden-Brown, RN Nursing
Scholarship is one of five honorary scholarships
established by The Rachor Family Foundation,
Ltd. and administered by the McLaren
Foundation to support employees and nursing
students at McLaren Regional Medical Center
in Flint. The four other scholarships are named
in honor of McLaren Nurse Aide Joe Mays,
and Nurses, Mary Alice Moore, RN, Aretha
Brock, LPN, and in memory of Patti Sherry, RN.
Each scholarship is $1,000 per year and will be
funded for a minimum of ten years.
The Rachor Family Foundation, Ltd. has created
over 50 scholarships since it was formed in
1996. The Foundation’s mission is to provide
post secondary education scholarships for local
students residing in Genesee, Shiawassee or
Lapeer County. Each scholarship is named
in honor of an outstanding individual who
exemplifies excellence in their field with the
hope that their success may inspire local
students to attain a degree.

A giving soul creates an
ever-living legacy.
She keeps every letter, card, and photograph
stowed in an antique cedar trunk. Bobbi Jo
Lucas can not explain why she has held on to all
of these mementos from her late grandmother.
Listening to Bobbi Jo tell stories of her life, one
thing is clear, Jeanne Prevo was more than
just a grandmother. For Bobbi Jo, she was
an inspiration. Jeanne’s spirit, strength, and
compassion touched many during her lifetime.
Her efforts to give back continue to touch the
lives of men and women today through the Ever
Living Tree Program benefiting cancer patients
at the Great Lakes Cancer Institute (GLCI)-
McLaren.
Jeanne Prevo, a special education teacher at
Durant-Tuuri-Mott Elementary school in Flint,
underwent treatment for breast cancer in 1982
at McLaren Regional Medical Center. She was in
and out of treatment over the next several years
before she was declared to be in remission
in 1990 and returned to work. Prevo was
immensely grateful that her employer supported
her throughout her extended leave and sought a
way to help other cancer patients less fortunate.
Prevo’s granddaughter, Bobbi Jo Lucas recalls
her grandmother’s compassion.

“My grandmother was tireless,” recalls Lucas.
“She was always volunteering and finding ways
to better herself. She found purpose in bringing

happiness to others. During her battle with
cancer, she was greatly influenced by Bernie
Siegel, MD, the well-known author of support
books for cancer patients. The central question
that he posed to his readers was ‘What can you
do to be happy for the rest of your life?’”
Jeanne found her true happiness in comforting
and helping others. Prevo was involved in the
creation of the Breast Cancer support group
at McLaren. Through these meetings, Prevo
discovered some women that were unable to
afford a wig, medicine, or even basic living
expenses such as gas money to drive to their
treatments. True to her spirit, she found a
way to help. Through Prevo’s inspiration, and
the guidance and support of former McLaren
Foundation president Susan Piper, and past
Cancer Center Director Elfrieda Prince, the Ever
Living Tree Program took shape in 1990.
to receive some financial assistance during
their treatment. In November, when people’s
thoughts turn to holiday shopping and parties,
McLaren mails a special holiday letter giving
recipients the opportunity to honor a loved one
and support the Ever Living Tree Program with
a financial gift. Donors can also customize
an ornament and have it placed on the large
holiday tree displayed in the lobby of McLaren
Regional Medical Center.
The Ever Living Tree Program has firmly taken
root in the hearts of many whose lives have
been touched by cancer. The Program has
raised more than $140,000 providing help to
more than 400 patients. With continued support,
the program will continue to grow and provide
respite for those with a special need who come
to McLaren for cancer treatment.

The Ever Living Tree Program was established
with the goal of providing financial assistance to
cancer patients being treated at McLaren. The
program bestows a one-time cash gift to current
cancer patients.
The Program is funded through the generous
support of employees, patrons and special
friends of McLaren’s cancer program. An
annual campaign makes it possible for patients

Building a foundation for
medical education.
McLaren Regional Medical Center is building
a new, two-story Medical Education Building
at G-3200 Beecher Road, Flint. This new
$6 million, 40,000 sq. ft. facility is designed
to improve medical education opportunities
for physicians, offer medical residents better
clinical experiences for the patients they serve,
provide better access to care for the uninsured/
underinsured population and encourage healthy
lifestyle activities within the community.
The “Building for our Future” campaign was
conducted by the McLaren Foundation for
McLaren’s new Medical Education Building
this project. Appreciation is extended to these

Residency Programs
McLaren Regional Medical Center sponsors
two primary care medical residencies: Family
Practice and Internal Medicine. Together, the
residents from both of these programs see more
than 38,000 patient visits per year. Many of
these patients have a special low-income coverage,
called the Genesee Health Plan. This plan
provides very basic coverage and almost no
coverage for extensive disease.
A large number of the patients cared for at the
two McLaren Residents clinics are uninsured or
underinsured. The quality of care these patients
receive is equal to that of the insured population.
Faculty attending physicians supervise all of the
residents by seeing the patient with the resident
or by reviewing the case with the resident prior
to the patient leaving the clinic.
The criteria for the faculty actually seeing
the patient include complexity of the patients’
problem and the level of training of the individual
resident. A faculty member is involved to some
degree with each patient. Without the Family
Practice and Internal Medicine Residency
Programs, many of the patients served would
not have access to health care.
A major quality indicator of the residents
themselves is how they perform on their
specialty board certification examinations. The
three-year rolling average pass rate for both
Family Practice and Internal Medicine residents
is 100% on the first attempt in taking the exam.
Much of the quality success is attributed to the
19 full-time faculty and three full-time clinical
psychologists who dedicate their efforts in
training 54 residents. This faculty-to-resident
ratio creates a rich environment for teaching
and instilling with each resident the highest
standards for quality care.

Additionally, the Internal Medicine Residents
staff the community-based Genesee Free Clinic
three half-days per week all year long. One
faculty attending physician and four thirdyear
residents commit 15-18 hours per week.
Patients seen at this clinic receive high-level
quality care and can be referred for follow-up
care, if necessary. Because most of these
patients do not have insurance, the Internal
Medicine Residency Clinic will continue to see
the patients. The Internal Medicine Residents
see between 3,400 – 3,500 patients annually
through the Genesee Free Clinic.
Child Evaluation Clinic
The Child Evaluation Clinic, located within the
McLaren Family Practice Residency Center,
provides medical and psychosocial evaluations
for children who are suspected victims of sexual
abuse. Since the Clinic’s inception in 1993,
more than 2,000 children have been served, and
the need continues to grow.
The Child Evaluation Clinic at McLaren is
one of only five such clinics in the state and
serves the multi-county region of Genesee,
Shiawassee, Livingston, Lapeer and northern
Oakland counties. Children are referred to the
Clinic for medical evaluation. When sexual
abuse is confirmed, the Clinic works with area
agencies to ensure the children receive the
follow-up treatment and care they need. Often,
the medical findings assist law enforcement in
obtaining the physical evidence necessary in
arresting and convicting child molestors.
The Walking Trail
The proposed walking trail on McLaren’s
campus is intended to promote healthy and
active lifestyles for patients and community
residents of greater Flint. In addition to
enhancing the environment and natural beauty
of the Flint Riverbank, there is great potential
for this trail to connect to the countywide trail
system leading from Stepping Stone Falls to the
Flushing Riverwalk.
Patients from the Family Practice and Internal
Medicine Residency Programs and the
Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program will use
the walking trail as part of their therapy. The
trail will be open to the public so that Genesee
County’s residents and visitors can engage
in healthy activity and enjoy the beauty of the
landscape.

The immediate impact and
scope of the total project.
For Patients with Low Incomes
The Family Practice and Internal Medicine
Residency Programs document nearly 38,000
patient visits a year. Of that number, more
than one-third are uninsured, underinsured or
Medicaid patients. Many of these patients are
just above the poverty level and have limited
choices in health care providers. This building
will provide improved health care services and
access for this population.
For Patients at the Child
Evaluation Clinic
Patients referred to the Child Evaluation Clinic
are suspected victims of sexual abuse. The new
facility will provide new and improved facilities
and equipment as well as a more comforting
environment for the children being examined at
the clinic.
For Patients in the Pulmonary
Rehabilitation Program
Currently, the Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program is
located at Bristol Place in Flint Township. This new
facility will add needed space for a growing volume
of patients while relocating the Pulmonary Rehab
program closer to the medical center and next door
to a group of pulmonary physician specialists. In
addition, the new 5,000 square foot gym will give
patients a better environment for treatment and will
also allow the program to grow.
For the Medical Residents
Providing and maintaining high quality residency
programs require periodic upgrades. The
McLaren Medical Education Building is an
opportunity to provide medical residents with the
most advanced equipment and facilities for their
learning and clinical patient care experience
while simultaneously creating a recognizable
identity in the community. Along with the new
clinical space, the building will also feature a
100-seat auditorium for lectures and grand
rounds programs and a library for reference and
research. These enhancements will promote the
recruitment and retention of both high-quality
faculty and residents.
For the Community
The McLaren Medical Education Building
include facilities for the community. The
auditorium will be available for community
programs as well as conference room space to
conduct support groups and special meetings.
Because of the location along the Flint River,
a walking trail behind the building has been
included in the plans. This trail will encourage
patients as well as the general community to
engage in walking and other health-related
activities.

About McLaren Regional Medical Center
McLaren Regional Medical Center (MRMC), is a nonprofit, 390-bed tertiary teaching facility located
in Flint, Michigan. MRMC is affiliated with Michigan State University College of Human Medicine in its
medical residency programs, including family practice, internal medicine, general surgery, orthopedic
surgery and radiology. MRMC also maintains a hematology/oncology fellowship program in partnership
with Michigan State University and a surgical oncology fellowship program. Centers of Excellence at
MRMC include heart and vascular services, orthopedics, neurosciences, kidney services, women’s
services and cancer services. Cancer services are provided through the Great Lakes Cancer Institute
(GLCI) which is a subsidiary of McLaren Health Care. GLCI provides access to advanced cancer
treatment, clinical research and state-of-the-art patient care. MRMC has been granted the 2005-2008
Distinguished Hospital Award for Patient Safety by HealthGrades, Inc. MRMC was also named among
the 100 Top Hospitals Performance Improvement Leaders in 2006 and 2007. MRMC is a subsidiary of
