Graduate Programs<br />

Graduate Assistantships<br />

Full-time student admitted to the program with regular<br />

status are eligible to apply for merit-based, competitive<br />

graduate assistantships. Graduate assistants receive<br />

financial support from the department in the form of a<br />

stipend and/or remission of tuition and fees for one<br />

year (two semesters). A graduate assistant who is<br />

supported at a funding level equivalent to full-time<br />

tuition and fees is required to choose the Thesis<br />

Option.<br />

An assistantship is renewable for a second academic<br />

year provided the student remains in good academic<br />

standing and makes satisfactory progress towards<br />

completion of the MSISE. An award made to a student<br />

who does not perform adequately in his or her duties<br />

may be rescinded after the first semester of the award<br />

period. In extreme circumstances, an award may be<br />

rescinded before the end of a semester.<br />

An application for assistantship consists of a résumé<br />

and letter of interest addressed to the department<br />

chair. For the following academic year, the deadline for<br />

application for an assistantship beginning in the Fall<br />

semester is April 1. subject to availability of funds,<br />

assistantships may be granted to begin in the Spring<br />

semester.<br />

MASTER OF SCIENCE WITH A MAJOR<br />

IN NURSING (MS)<br />

Department Mission<br />

As the Southeastern <strong>Colorado</strong> Center for Nursing<br />

Education, the Department of Nursing’s mission is to<br />

prepare today’s nursing student to be tomorrow’s<br />

competent and caring nurse.<br />

Department Goals<br />

The Nursing Department will:<br />

• Provide quality learning experiences for nursing<br />

students that prepare graduates for entry level<br />

baccalaureate nursing practice or advanced<br />

nursing practice in a culturally diverse community.<br />

• Provide multiple degree entry paths based on<br />

previous education and academic entrance criteria<br />

that support student achievement at a professional<br />

level.<br />

• Serve as a regional nursing education center for<br />

southern <strong>Colorado</strong>, by collaborating with local and<br />

regional health care agencies to provide nursing<br />

programs.<br />

• Maintain educational excellence demonstrated by<br />

program status consistent with the <strong>Colorado</strong><br />

Board of Nursing, national accrediting agency<br />

criteria and educational emphases on professional<br />

nursing standards.<br />

• Provide a supportive and caring learning environment<br />

to address the learning needs for a diverse<br />

student population.<br />

• Support role development responsive to the<br />

changing health care environment by redefining<br />

and maintaining competencies throughout one’s<br />

practice.<br />

Graduate Program Goals<br />

The program will:<br />

• Facilitate learning to provide a foundation of<br />

knowledge and competence for advanced practice<br />

in clinical settings or nursing education.<br />

• Support the learning needs of a diverse student<br />

population by creating a learning environment in<br />

which all are respected, nurtured, and celebrated.<br />

• Incorporate a multi-theoretical model to provide<br />

culturally competent care for clients in a variety of<br />

settings.<br />

• Prepare graduates to exhibit standards of<br />

excellence in practice and professional performance<br />

as they assume advanced nursing roles.<br />

• Integrate theory and research in nursing education<br />

or clinical practice.<br />

• Provide a regional center for graduate education<br />

that facilitates progression from Baccalaureate<br />

degree to Master’s prepared nurses.<br />

Expected Student Outcomes<br />

The Master of Science with a Major in Nursing is<br />

designed to prepare the graduate to:<br />

• Demonstrate competence and caring in advanced<br />

clinical practice to improve the quality of health<br />

care that clients receive in a variety of settings.<br />

• Synthesize and analyze advanced knowledge<br />

using theories, research, concepts, and principles<br />
