Strategies and procedures for using the newspaper as a<br />

Techniques of adapting reading instruction for the<br />

linguistically and culturally different child. Problems of<br />

many minority groups are analyzed. Prerequisite: RDG<br />

RDG 450 Diagnosis and Remediation of Reading<br />

Problems 3(2-3)<br />

Diagnostic and evaluation procedures used in detecting<br />

and remediating problems and individualized instruction.<br />

Appropriate for elementary and secondary teachers. Field<br />

Individual projects and problem-solving experiences<br />

designed to meet students’ special needs. With instructor’s<br />

RDG 510 Foundations of Reading Instruction 3(3-0)<br />

Basic course for other graduate reading courses,<br />

including reading skills, sequence, materials, psychology<br />

of reading and relationship to other language arts.<br />

RDG 531 Developing Creative Centers 1(1-0)<br />

Students will investigate various types of learning centers<br />

and means of successful implementation in the classroom.<br />

Development of materials, lesson plans and recordkeeping<br />

systems which will result in a complete reading<br />

center. Investigation into research on effectiveness of<br />

learning centers. Prerequisite: graduate standing. (SS)<br />

diagnosis; remediation strategies applied by students.<br />

Prerequisites: a beginning reading course, graduate<br />

standing, and teacher certification or initial testing in basic<br />

RDG 552 Psycholinguistic Views of Reading: Process<br />

to Practice 2(1-3)<br />

Introduction to psycholinguistic perspectives through<br />

analysis of oral reading errors. Reading Miscue Manual as<br />

an instrument for investigating reader’s strengths and<br />

weaknesses. Strategies for remediating poor quality<br />

miscues. Prerequisites: beginning course in reading,<br />

graduate standing, and teacher certification or initial<br />

testing in basic competencies. (*)<br />

RDG 560 Practicum 2(0-6)<br />

Work with small groups and individual pupils in the public<br />

school preparing materials and lessons under the<br />

supervision of a reading teacher. Applied to both<br />

elementary and secondary schools depending on the<br />

instructor’s assignment. Prerequisites: RDG 301 or 425,<br />

graduate standing, and teacher certification or initial<br />

testing in basic competencies. (*)<br />

RECREATION (REC)<br />

UNDERGRADUATE COURSES<br />

REC 102 Mountain Orientation 2(1-2)<br />

An intensive one-week field experience in the <strong>Colorado</strong><br />

mountains. Clothing and equipment selection, nutrition<br />

and rations planning, back country conservation and<br />

sanitation, navigation, and trail techniques. (*)<br />

REC 103 Winter Orientation 2(1-2)<br />

An intensive one-week ski tour experience in the <strong>Colorado</strong><br />

mountains. Group dynamics, leadership, and expedition<br />

behavior. Travels hut to hut with some winter camping.<br />

Prerequisite: permission of the instructor. (*)<br />

REC 104 Desert Orientation 2(1-2)<br />

An intensive one-week desert camping and backpacking<br />

experience, accompanied by nine lectures in preparation<br />

for the trip. Natural and cultural history, desert conservation,<br />

group dynamics. (*)<br />

REC 105 Canyon Orientation 2(1-2)<br />

Students will develop proficiency in canyon travel, group<br />

camping, and will explore the geology, geography, and<br />

ecology of the canyon country. (*)<br />

REC 240 Recreation Program Design 3(3-0)<br />

Rationale supporting and methods of conducting<br />

recreation programs in a wide variety of public, private,<br />

voluntary and commercial recreation agencies. (S)<br />
