Coursework leading to the Bachelor of Social Work<br />
(BSW) degree involves the development of knowledge,<br />
values, and skills inherent in the social work profession<br />
from a person-in-environment strengths perspective.<br />
Courses required for the major incorporate a broad<br />
liberal arts base to promote critical thinking and an<br />
appreciation and understanding of diversity.<br />
Requirements for the Social Work Major<br />
General Education Foundation Courses<br />

As a base for professional intervention, social work<br />
practice requires mastery of knowledge and skills<br />
commonly taught in the liberal arts. Students planning<br />
to major in social work should select general education<br />
courses that develop proficiency in verbal and written<br />
communication, competency in problem solving, and<br />
promote critical and analytical thinking. Courses that<br />
incorporate human growth and behavior, diversity, and<br />
the interaction of individuals, groups, neighborhoods,<br />
communities and society, within the context of social,<br />
economic, political, and governmental systems,<br />
provide a substantive base for majors. Students must<br />
complete the <strong>University</strong>’s general education requirements<br />
prior to enrollment in upper division social work<br />
courses.<br />

Courses in the social work curriculum are provided in<br />
the areas of human behavior and the social environment,<br />
social welfare policy and services, social<br />
research, social work practice and field practicum.<br />
Learning takes place in the classroom and in approved<br />
agency settings under supervision. Early in the<br />
curriculum students learn about social agencies and<br />
the roles of social service providers through a volunteer<br />
placement for 45 clock hours in an approved<br />
agency for a social work class, Introduction to Social<br />
Work Practice (SW 222). Courses in the major must be<br />
