PROFESSIONAL WRITING MINOR<br />

The English program coordinates a minor in professional<br />

writing, designed to acquaint students with<br />

commercial nonfiction writing, Web writing and design,<br />

desktop publishing, and rhetoric and grammar for<br />

editors.<br />

Additional credits may be earned in photojournalism,<br />

graphic design, and public relations writing.<br />

Program Goals<br />

• Students will gain a working understanding of<br />

writing for editing, and designing both print<br />

magazines and informative Web sites.<br />

• Students will create writing and design portfolios<br />

in the core courses to demonstrate skills for<br />

potential employers.<br />

Outcomes Assessment Activities<br />

The Coordinator of the Professional Writing minor<br />

reviews student portfolios and evaluates the level of<br />

performance demonstrated, tracks the placement of<br />

students in internships and relevant positions of<br />

employment, and administers a questionnaire keyed to<br />

the program goals to graduating minors, reporting the<br />

results annually.<br />
