• Prepare students to become productive, accountable,<br />

ethical and responsible professionals.<br />

• Prepare students to enter graduate or professional<br />

schools.<br />

Recreation graduates are expected to:<br />

• Demonstrate knowledge of the history and<br />

philosophy of leisure, recreation, and parks in<br />

western society;<br />

• Exhibit awareness of the scope of the leisure<br />

services delivery spectrum, including public,<br />

private, and non-profit sector service providers in<br />

major specializations of leisure, recreation, and<br />

parks;<br />

• Demonstrate an understanding of and ability to<br />

conduct various recreation program planning<br />

phases including client assessment, goal setting,<br />

activity analysis/selection, program management<br />

and evaluation;<br />

• Demonstrate knowledge and the skills involved in<br />

a recreation leadership function including<br />

interpersonal communication, trust building, power<br />

and influence, interpersonal conflict and its<br />

resolution, teaching and transference, and<br />

decision making;<br />

• Exhibit an awareness of the special populations<br />

that recreation programs and resources must<br />

accommodate, the implications of programming<br />

for each population, and specific agencies/<br />

legislation currently providing services for each<br />

population;<br />

• Demonstrate knowledge of the principal federal<br />

and state agencies providing parks and resourcebased<br />

recreation opportunities in the United<br />

<strong>State</strong>s including the primary management policies<br />

and challenges;<br />

• Demonstrate competencies in applying principles<br />

of management to recreation services and<br />

resources, including the organization of agencies,<br />

personnel, fiscal/risk management, and marketing;<br />

• Exhibit an understanding of philosophies, history,<br />

curricular elements, and settings for outdoor<br />

education in the United <strong>State</strong>s;<br />

• Exhibit an awareness of key professional organizations<br />

and current trends/issues in the field of<br />

recreation and how to obtain matching employment;<br />

• Demonstrate the ability to read and interpret<br />

professional journal articles relevant to recreation<br />

and to carry out and report on new, original<br />

research; and<br />

• Understand the principles of recreation facility<br />

design, construction and management.<br />
