FROM THE PRINCIPAL
P&C Working Bee – this annual event takes place
this Sunday 19 th August from 9:00am to 1:00pm
followed by a barbecue and refreshments. It is a
great opportunity to contribute to the community,
meet other parents and see the rewards of labour
at the end of the day. There will be plenty of jobs
to be done for all ages and capacities! Students
will be able to attend and have the time
recognised in either volunteering hours or for
school references. Thanks to David Nord for his
usual exceptional organisation. Please note RSVPs
should be given to him for catering purposes.
“That parents who breach their child’s right to
privacy should be prosecuted” was challenging
with some unexpected trains of thought emerging.
We wish the team, Henry Lin, Tess Gordon, Sarah
Jackson and Fred Drake all the best in their debate
against Penrith High.
Years 8 to 9 Information Night – thank you to the
parents and students of Year 8 for your interest in
this important night on our calendar and the
thought that has gone into making elective choices
which are appropriate, stimulating and
challenging. All selections will be done online this
year but if further advice is needed please talk to
teachers. The final pattern of electives will be
determined from the levels of interest shown and
students will then confirm their subjects before
timetabling begins. Thanks to Ms Cath Whalan for
her co‐ordination of the night and to all staff who
represented the various courses.
Year 11 Debating – last week we recognised the
Year 12 debaters for their excellence and this week
congratulations must go to the Year 11 team who
are now proceeding to the state semi‐finals at
UWS Parramatta Campus having defeated North
Sydney Boys’ High last Friday. Their debate topic,
Congratulations to the Year 10 team (Tom Roberts,
Imogen d’Souza, Ivan Peric and Sarah Lockhart)
upon their win today in the interzone level of their
competition against Turramurra.
Science Techno 2012 – this annual College cross
campus curriculum project for science concludes
today with the judging of finalists from Manly,
Mackellar Girls’, Balgowlah Boys’ and Cromer
Campuses at Freshwater. Each campus has chosen
its finalists for today with a selection of guest
adjudicators awarding special prizes and students
from Harbord Public and North Curl Curl Public
helping in the determination of the people’s
choice award. Each year has seen the standard of
work improve and this year was no different. Year

8 students must choose a topic and research its
technology and social impact then assemble an
educational display, often interactive, which they
then talk to in presentations. The range of skills
required is very demanding including the ability to
work collaboratively, to use discrimination in
research and imagination in presentation. The
range of topics is a good initial indicator of how
successful the project will be. This year students
have covered very difficult areas of scientific
research and development.

A huge thank you must go to the science staff led
by the implacable Ms Vicki Maggs for their support
of students in helping them learn so effectively.
“Orthodontic Braces” were overall
Manly winners with “Tea” earning the
People’s Choice award for Manly.
Long Tan Commemoration – today Manly Campus
and the College jazz ensemble were invited by the
Vietnam Veterans’ Association and Manly Council
to help commemorate this crucial battle in the
Vietnam War and to recognise the service of
soldiers who served in this controversial battle.
Jessica Nord and Giles Devaney (Year 10) delivered
a highly intelligent and moving speech recognising
the place of this war in our history, the College jazz
group provided musical accompaniment and Ella
Byrne impressed with her solo performance. Our
thanks go to the Vietnam Veterans’ Association
and Manly Council for their support and to Ms
Julie Page who advised the speakers, and musical
director Colin Bright.
2012 Legacy Junior Public Speaking Award – the
Northern Sydney Region Final of this competition
was held this week at The Arts Unit in Lewisham.
There were 16 speakers who all delivered a five
minute prepared speech and a two minute
impromptu. Sebastian Szambowski (Year 9) gave a
highly intelligent speech on the paradoxes of “The
Carrot and The Stick” in relation to education and
an erudite impromptu on the topic “Odd One Out”
using a theme of the measure of the man with
Nelson Mandela as his core example. Although he
didn’t proceed to the state semi‐finals, Sebastian
has gained immensely from this experience.

Congratulations to:
Erol Sertbas (Year 11) who was recognised last
week in this section and then on the weekend
scored a goal in the Swan’s reserve game. Erol
has a great future in this game.
In this regular feature we like to recognize
students who have achieved highly in school and
community events, competitions and activities.
Demonstrations of the school ethos of academic
excellence, personal best and giving back to the
community deserve to be recognized. Parents are

City to Surf Fundraiser
A HUGE THANK YOU for turning
out very early and despite the
inclement weather to help out
with the bags. Manly was again
praised for its organisational skills and willingness
to help other groups, particularly the green area.
So THANK YOU – parents, students and friends!
We will raise $3,600 through our efforts. A big
thank you to Shini de Silva for organising the
troops.

Committee Meeting
At the Committee meeting, the long awaited
Concert Xylophone was approved for purchase.
This will be a treat for percussionists when it
arrives and will greatly enrich the sounds of our
symphonic ensembles.
Strings
With Michael Thrift in Austria during August on a
professional conducting course, we have two guest
conductors. Chamber Orchestra will enjoy the
skills of Alex Pringle whilst Strings will be privileged
to learn under the tuition of Brian Buggy, one of
Sydney’s leading music educators.
