ST. ANNE’S BASKETBALL<br />
PLAYER EVALUATION GUIDELINES<br />
Purpose: Player skill placement <strong>evaluation</strong>s are held in order to help <strong>player</strong>s learn and<br />
compete at the appropriate skill levels. There exi<strong>st</strong>s a large range of physical and emotional<br />
development for each age group. Our goal is to accurately determine a <strong>player</strong>’s skill level based<br />
on their current abilities.<br />
Division of Teams<br />
• Teams will be made up of 7 to 10 <strong>player</strong>s when possible. Exceptions will be <strong>st</strong>udied by the<br />
<strong>Athletic</strong> Director and Basketball Chair in conjunction with the coaches.<br />
• Players will be placed on teams based on the skill levels determined during the <strong>player</strong><br />
<strong>evaluation</strong> process.<br />
• Coaches will not be allowed to select <strong>player</strong>s or team sizes. As a result, some coaching<br />
assignments will not be complete until after the <strong>player</strong> <strong>evaluation</strong> process.<br />
Format for Player Evaluations<br />
• Sessions:<br />
o Players from 3 rd , 4 th and 5 th grade levels will participate in 1-11/2 hour <strong>evaluation</strong><br />
session.<br />
o Girls and boys will be evaluated separately.<br />
o No make-up sessions are available. Only extreme circum<strong>st</strong>ances will be<br />
considered by the <strong>Athletic</strong> Director and the Basketball Chair.<br />
• Drills:<br />
o Players will be evaluated on passing, dribbling, lay-ups, shooting, defensive skills<br />
(scrimmage), rebounding skills (scrimmage), and by performing a (*) vertical<br />
jump (*if reque<strong>st</strong>ed).<br />
• Evaluations:<br />
o Evaluators will be volunteers (Appointed by <strong>Athletic</strong> Director and Basketball<br />
Chair) with <strong>basketball</strong> knowledge.<br />
o Parents and coaches may not evaluate their child or team in 3 rd , 4 th or 5 th grade.<br />
o Coaches may evaluate their team/new <strong>player</strong>(s) in 6 th , 7 th and 8 th grade if they have<br />
been coaching the team for at lea<strong>st</strong> two years.<br />
o Evaluations are based on a point sy<strong>st</strong>em (1pt-5pts).<br />
• Results:<br />
o Evaluations will be totaled for the session.<br />
o Results will be tallied by the Basketball Chair and reviewed by the <strong>Athletic</strong><br />
Director.<br />
o The <strong>Athletic</strong> Director will then divide <strong>player</strong>s into teams based on these results.<br />
o Coaches will be notified of the <strong>player</strong>s on their team.<br />
o Coaches should notify their <strong>player</strong>s as soon as possible after receiving their team<br />
ro<strong>st</strong>er.<br />

DRILLS SHEET AND PROCESS<br />
PASSING:<br />
Each <strong>player</strong> will demon<strong>st</strong>rate their ability to make a bounce pass, a che<strong>st</strong> pass, and overhead pass,<br />
and a side bounce pass. They will be evaluated and rated for:<br />
o Passing <strong>st</strong>rength<br />
o Passing form<br />
o Catching form and ability<br />
DRIBBLING:<br />
Each <strong>player</strong> will demon<strong>st</strong>rate their ability to dribble using both hands through a series of drills<br />
using a full court course of offset cones. They will be evaluated for:<br />
O Dribbling Form with both hands<br />
o Change-over ability<br />
o Ball and body control<br />
o Speed with the ball<br />
LAY-UPS:<br />
Each <strong>player</strong> will demon<strong>st</strong>rate right and left handed lay-ups. They will be evaluated on:<br />
o Dribbling<br />
o Footwork<br />
o Shooting form and accuracy<br />
SHOOTING:<br />
Each <strong>player</strong> will dribble to and shoot from different spots on the court. They will be evaluated<br />
and rated for:<br />
o Ability to square up<br />
o Shooting form and release<br />
o Accuracy and consi<strong>st</strong>ency<br />
SCRIMMAGING:<br />
Each <strong>player</strong> will participate in a scrimmage game. Each <strong>player</strong> will be evaluated and rated on:<br />
o Defensive skills and form<br />
o Rebounding skills and blocking out ability<br />
o Movement without the ball<br />
o Screening skills<br />
o Passing and Team Play<br />
o Shot selection and scoring<br />
* VERTICAL JUMP: (*If Reque<strong>st</strong>ed)<br />
Each <strong>player</strong> will e<strong>st</strong>ablish a point on a measured wall by <strong>st</strong>anding with their arm extended over<br />
their head. Then, from a <strong>st</strong>anding spot, each <strong>player</strong> will jump and touch the measured wall at the<br />
highe<strong>st</strong> point possible. The highe<strong>st</strong> point will be recorded and measured and the difference<br />
between the two spots will be recorded and measured. Each <strong>player</strong>(s) will be ranked according to<br />
this measure.
