Note: From 1930-33, the Lions were the
Portsmouth (Por) Spartans. The arizona Cardinals
were located in Chicago from 1920-59 and in St.
Louis from 1960-87 before moving to Phoenix,
ariz., in 1988.
The team became the arizona Cardinals in 1994.

‣ detroit’s series with the Cardinals
is the oldest in the history of the
Lions’ franchise. The first game was
played october 5, 1930 between
the Portsmouth Spartans and the
Chicago Cardinals, and it ended in a
scoreless tie. That game is one of two
scoreless ties (other was a 0-0 tie
played September 15, 1940) played
between the Lions and the Cardinals in
their series. The Lions own a 31-24-5
advantage over the Cardinals.
‣ September 30, 1934 marked the first
occasion that the detroit Lions and the
Chicago Cardinals matched up, and the
Lions were victorious 6-0.
‣ in all, the Portsmouth Spartans were
2-2-2 vs. the Chicago Cardinals. detroit
has registered a 19-9-3 mark against
the Chicago Cardinals, a 5-4 record
over the St. Louis Cardinals and have
a 5-6 mark since the Cardinals moved
to Phoenix. detroit currently has a
three-game winning streak against
the Cardinals.
‣ The Lions-Cardinals series is one of
four series (Chicago, green Bay and
new York giants) in franchise history
that dates back to 1930, Portsmouth’s
inaugural season in the nFL.
‣ The teams met twice in 1993 with
detroit winning both contests, 26-20
at the Silverdome September 26 and
21-14 in Phoenix december 12.
‣ Behind the record-setting performance
by QB Charlie Batch at arizona
november 18, 2001 (a then franchise
record 436 yards passing), the Lions’
offense set several team records and
collected some of the franchise’s
highest totals in other team offensive
categories. The Lions’ 62 pass attempts
set the team’s single-game record
by surpassing the previous high of 57
attempts accomplished vs. Chicago
10/9/88. The team’s 36 completions are
better than the 33 completions tossed
at Cleveland 9/28/86 and vs. green Bay
10/25/87. The Lions’ established a new
record for net passing yards by airing
out 429 yards, which is better than
the previous high of 395 vs. Minnesota
11/23/95. and the 22 first downs gained
on pass plays is a new team record,
passing the old mark of 20 set vs.
Minnesota 11/23/95.
‣ detroit snapped a five-game losing
streak in the series in the 2003 season
opener with a 42-24 win over the
Cardinals at Ford Field. The win was
the first for former Lions head Coach
Steve Mariucci. QB Joey harrington
threw for a career-high four touchdown
passes in the game.
‣ in detroit’s 26-12 win over arizona
december 5, 2004, rB Kevin Jones
ran for a career-high 196 yards on 26
carries, 105 of which came in the first
half. it is the second-highest rushing
total by a Lions rookie in team history,
just one yard shy of Mel Farr’s record
of 197 yards on 24 carries at Minnesota
(11/12/67).
‣ in the same 2004 contest, K Jason
hanson became the 20th player in
nFL history to reach the 1,300-point
plateau.
‣ in the most recent meeting at Ford Field
(12/20/09), S Louis delmas returned an
interception 101 yards for a touchdown
which was the longest by a nFL rookie
since 1926 (Columbus rB Pete Barnum,
103t at Canton 9/26/26). it also ranks
as the longest by a Lions rookie in
team history and is tied for the second
longest in franchise history.
