Welcome to the
Murray River, Lakes & Coorong
Looking for a water playground? You’ve come to the right place.
Whether you want to relax on a leisurely houseboat holiday,
explore Australia’s greatest waterway, experience Indigenous
culture and history, or see wildlife up close, the Murray River,
Lakes & Coorong is the place to play and pause.
From its source in the Snowy Mountains in New South
Wales, the Murray flows 2520 kilometres to the Southern
Ocean in South Australia, attracting wildlife and bringing
Outback landscapes to life along the way.
Just one hour’s drive from Adelaide and located near other
tourist regions, the Murray River is a popular escape for
locals and visitors who come to water ski, fish and relax.
Whether paddling a canoe, hopping onto a historic paddlesteamer
or enjoying one of the most luxurious houseboats
in the world, cruising the Murray River is a breeze, with
everything from lunch-time cruises to week-long safaris
on offer.
A series of locks and weirs control river flows and
crossing the Murray River is an adventure in itself
with ferries outnumbering bridges. In towns you’ll find
barbeques, playgrounds and lawn lining the riverbanks,
perfect for families and a picnic lunch.
Just 90 minutes south of Adelaide is the Lakes and Coorong,
where the Murray River meets the sea.
With more than 275 different plant species and 200 bird
species spread across almost 47,000 hectares of stunning
lagoons and saltpans, the Coorong is a popular place to
fish, four-wheel drive, canoe, hike, camp and birdwatch.
Named from the Aboriginal word ‘karangk’, meaning
‘narrow neck’, the Coorong stretches 130 kilometres
along South Australia’s south-east coast from Kingston
S.E. to the Murray Mouth and is easily accessible from
the Princes Highway, which is part of the Melbourne to
Adelaide Touring Route.
For thousands of years, the Ngarrindjeri and Nganguraku
people have called the river system home and you can
share their stories at Camp Coorong and Raukkan.
Then try your hand fishing for famed Coorong Mullet,
watch pelicans soar or dine on local Coorong Angas Beef.
With shimmering pink salt lakes, wildflowers and sand
dunes rising out of low-lying scrub, the Mallee marks the
start of the Murray River, Coorong & Lakes region.
Crisscrossed by four-wheel drive tracks – including the
popular Border Track – the Mallee boasts 336,000 hectares
of conservation park and is popular with campers, hikers,
birdwatchers and foodies who stock-up on Mallee honey,
olives and olive oil.
From wildlife and Indigenous culture to fascinating history
and adrenalin-packed action, the Murray River, Lakes &
Coorong is a playground for everyone. Take some time
out to play among the wetlands, wildlife and water, you’ll
return home feeling relaxed and recharged.
Ferries and the lock and
weir system
Locks and weirs make SA’s section of the
Murray River permanently navigable, each
raising the water level behind about three
metres, creating a series of stepped weir
pools used by boats travelling up or down
stream. To see Lock 1 at Blanchetown in
action, or for river access in a boat, visit
between 8am–11:30am and 1–4:30pm any
day, except Christmas Day (grounds are open
from 8am–4:30pm). Ferries are a free 24 hour
service that can take up to eight or 12 vehicles
(depending on the ferry). Ferry crossings
are in operation at Swan Reach, Walker Flat,
Purnong, Mannum, Tailem Bend/Jervois,
Wellington and Narrung.
Drive on Left in Australia
Take care when driving on Australian
roads. Be sure to drive on the left-hand
side of two-way roads. Obey the road
signs and remember that speed limits are
strictly enforced in Australia. You must
not drive if your blood alcohol level is 0.05
per cent or higher, nor are you permitted
to use a hand-held mobile phone when
driving. When travelling long distances
plan your journey to include several rest
breaks and ensure you have enough fuel
for your journey. For your safety and
enjoyment slow down, relax, and enjoy
the country pace of the Murray River.
safety tips
BE AWARE ON HIGH FIRE RISK DAYS...
When holidaying, always check with the local council, Police,
CFS or the media to help you decide if you will travel through or
to a high risk area on a Total Fire Ban day.
If you do decide to travel, ensure that you and your vehicle are
prepared in the event of a fire.
Image Thinboyfatter • Flickr
Bushfire Information Hotline 1300 362 361 (TTY 133 677)
www.cfs.sa.gov.au
1. HAVE A PLAN
The decision of whether to stay or to leave during high fire risk days is
critical. If you decide to leave you should do so early. Have alternative
routes worked out that lead away from bushfire risk areas.
2. RESPONSIBILITIES
Be aware of restrictions on the use of gas BBQs and campfires
during the fire danger season and on total fire ban days,
for further information contact the CFS.
3. PLAN AHEAD
On days of Total Fire Bans, it is best to postpone a trip into the bush
since the risk of a fire starting and growing rapidly is extremely high.
Indigenous history
For thousands of years, several Indigenous
groups lived near the water, including South
Australia’s largest Aboriginal communities, the
Ngarrindjeri people and the Nganguraku people,
many of whom still live in the region today.
These people maintain an intimate knowledge
of the land, its wildlife, seasons and climate,
with this vast body of knowledge being
passed from generation to generation.
Local communities used to hunt and trade
along the river, building canoes from river
red gums. Rock art and scattered canoe bark
trees can still be seen, providing fascinating
reminders of a culture in perfect harmony with
the land and its creatures.
In recent years of drought – concerned that
the spirit of the river was dying – Indigenous
people along the entire length of the
Murray River have held River Country Spirit
ceremonies known as ‘Ringbalin’.
One place to experience Indigenous culture
is at Ngaut Ngaut, a 45 minute drive from
Mannum, where local guides take visitors to
the birthplace of the Black Duck Dreaming and
Australia’s first archaeological dig.
At Camp Coorong, just out of Meningie,
visitors can hear about the Ngarrindjeri people’s
feelings for land and culture, view a midden
site (an occupation site where Aboriginals left
the remains of their meals)and talk about burial
grounds, learn the art of basket weaving, and
join a nature walk with Aboriginal Elders.
Raukkan is a small Aboriginal community
on the shores of Lake Alexandrina. It is the
birthplace of David Unaipon, the inventor and
author whose image, along with the mission
church of Raukkan, appears on the $50 note.
European history
As well as being rich in Indigenous history,
the waterways have a fascinating European
history acting as a major transport corridor
linking New South Wales, Victoria and
South Australia.
In 1853, the South Australian Government
posted a financial incentive to anyone who
could navigate the Murray River by paddlesteamer.
Two settlers, William Randell and
Francis Cadell, took up the call with Randell
captaining Australia’s first paddle-steamer, the
Mary Ann, in March and Cadell navigating the
Lady Augusta from the Murray Mouth to Swan
Hill in August.
The first European settlement on the South
Australian stretch of the Murray River in South
Australia was at Murrundie, established by
Edward John Eyre in 1839. Other river towns
quickly followed, spurred on by the discovery
of gold in Victoria in 1851.
When river trade was at its peak more than
100 paddle-steamers plied their trade on
the Murray River. Today, one of the original
vessels, the PS Marion, is docked at the
Mannum Dock Museum. Built in 1897, she is
one of the last operational, heritage, steamdriven,
wood-fired, overnight passenger
carrying side paddle-steamers in the world.
Goolwa was Australia’s first inland port, built in
1853 to connect Goolwa to the seaside towns
of Port Elliot and Victor Harbor. This allowed
goods to be moved overland from river boats
to sea boats, so that neither had to negotiate
the treacherous waters of the Murray Mouth.
In the Mallee, a railway line and government
bores allowed towns such as Lameroo,
Pinnaroo and Karoonda to flourish in the early
19th century, and these towns, featuring
playgrounds, bakeries and other services, are
still welcoming travellers today.
Keep alcohol and drugs off the water
RESPECTING OUR WATERS
It’s just not safe to
consume alcohol or drugs
on your boat. They can
need to swim to safety, can
lead to rapid exhaustion
and hypothermia.
Skippers and crew can
be tested for having drugs
and alcohol in their system.
If found to be under the
influence, .05 or over you
could be fined up to $1600
or do three months jail time.
Remember some medications
can make you drowsy and
easily confused, so check
for any side effects before
heading out on the water.
Murray River
Food &
wine
With abundant water and sunshine, it’s no wonder a visit to
the Murray River, Lakes & Coorong is an experience to savour.
In fact, just about every ingredient you
find on a pizza – from cheeses to salami,
tomatoes, onions and olives – can be found
growing or being made around South
Australia’s waterways and some of the best
produce can be picked up at the Murray
Bridge Farmers’ Market.
Held every Saturday from 8am to noon at
the Wharf Precinct, visitors can stock up on
fresh seasonal fruit and vegies, oven-baked
breads and pizzas, home-made baked delights,
honey, olive oil, native plants, potted herbs
and more; or just relax over a fresh coffee
and farmer’s breakfast.
If you can’t get to the markets but want to
try some famous Coorong Mullet, drop into a
small stall on the Princes Highway, found just
out of Meningie – or have a go at catching
some yourself.
Murray Bridge and the Coorong are known as
the meat capital of South Australia, prized for
their Angus Beef; while nearby Jervois is wellknown
for its dairy farms, producing rich and
flavoursome milk, the basis for locally-made
cheeses, creams and other dairy products.
For fruits, such as apricots and oranges, head
to Mypolonga or if you’re looking for a pit-stop
on the way from Adelaide to Melbourne,
The Big Olive at Tailem Bend is the perfect
place, offering adults olive oil tastings, freshly
brewed coffee and snacks, and the kids a
chance to be photographed in front of one of
Australia’s many iconic ‘big things’. Stock up
on award-winning extra virgin olive oil, olive
spread and table olives.
Plenty of picturesque dining experiences
await throughout the Murray River, Lakes &
Coorong. Dine with water views, stop by a
traditional country bakery, visit a family-friendly
pub or dine aboard one of the Murray River’s
many houseboats, feeling the water slowly
rock beneath you while indulging in local food
and wine. Boutique and smaller venues may
require bookings, so it’s best to call ahead.
After a fun day exploring, put your feet up and
relax with a coffee or captivating dessert at
one of the region’s coffee shops. If seafood is
your preference, throw a line in and nab your
own ‘catch of the day’.
For a spot of wine-tasting, take a short drive
to Willow Point Wines just south of Murray
Canoe the Coorong,
Coorong National Park
From coastal wilderness where pelicans soar to mallee scrublands and rich
Aboriginal heritage sites – the national parks of the Murray River, Lakes &
Coorong hold countless gems to discover.
Be mesmerised by the Coorong
One of Australia’s most iconic parks, the
Coorong, is a 130 kilometre expanse of
saltwater lagoons and striking scenery. To
fully appreciate the Coorong’s magic, hit the
walking trails, paddle a kayak, four-wheel drive
along designated tracks to unspoilt places
or camp by a lagoon, where the only sounds
you’ll hear are the waves and the birds.
Keep your camera handy to photograph ducks,
swans, cormorants, terns, grebes or the
much-loved Australian pelican – made famous
by the 1976 Australian film Storm Boy, filmed
in the region.
The Coorong is a place of great cultural
significance to the traditional Aboriginal
landowners, the Ngarrindjeri people,
and is named from the Indigenous word
meaning ‘narrow neck’. Discover important
archaeological sites and ‘middens’ – mounds
of discarded shells accumulated over
thousands of years indicating the presence
of ancient Aboriginal camp sites.
Cultural heritage at Ngaut Ngaut
Just two hours from Adelaide, immerse
yourself in an ancient landscape in Ngaut
Ngaut Conservation Park. Stand on lofty,
ochre-coloured cliffs where the traditional
landowners, the Nganguraku people, and
the visiting Ngarkat people, would take in
the beauty of the picturesque landscape. To
experience Nguat Ngaut, join a guided tour
and marvel at footsteps in the cliffs that were
carved out over thousands of years.
For details and tour bookings contact Isobelle
Association by phoning (08) 8570 1196 or
Explore Ngarkat’s rugged terrain
Ngarkat Conservation Park is renowned for its
network of challenging 4WD tracks, including
the Big Desert Loop and Ngarkat loop tracks
through dense mallee scrub and sand dunes.
On the Border Track you’ll follow the footsteps
of Edward White, the first surveyor to mark
the boundary separating Victoria and South
Australia. Plan to drive the one-way section of
the Border Track when it is open between
1 April and 31 October.
An easier place to access in Ngarkat is
Pertendi Hut – a great spot to picnic beneath
shady trees, or stay a few nights in your tent
or caravan. Close by at the interpretive trail
learn about the park’s fascinating history and
how fire has shaped the landscape.
Birdwatchers will love Comet Bore and Rabbit
Island Soak where up to 120 native bird
species may be seen, including Yellow-tailed
Black cockatoos, striped honeyeaters and
Regent parrots.
A great stop for those travelling onto the
Limestone Coast is the five-kilometre Tyms
Lookout Hike, easily accessible from Keith or
Tintinara. Find all the details in the free ‘Tracks
of the Mallee’ brochure, downloadable from
The Coorong is a narrow neck of sand
can be found in the Coorong. The sea
and coastal lakes provided an
abundance of food and mounds
of shells, old camp fire and burial
Big Bend,
Murray River
167 kilometres from Adelaide
map reference G1
This attractive river town was settled in 1899
when Swan Reach station owner Paul Hasse
subdivided a portion of his land. During the
first half of the 20th century the town fought a
constant battle with flood, culminating in 1956
when most of the businesses in the main
street were washed away. View more than
500 historic photographs from the 1956 flood
at the Swan Reach Museum.
Today, Swan Reach has been proudly rebuilt
and boasts an excellent hotel with sweeping
river views from its prominent location
perched on top of golden cliffs. A nine-hole
golf course, as well as a free 24 hour ferry,
general store and boat ramp ensures you are
set for a real getaway.
The Aboriginal name for this area is
‘Kongorong’, which refers to the large number
of black swans that live here.
Attractions
The area around Swan Reach is renowned for
its towering cliffs, including Big Bend, which
boasts the tallest cliffs along the entire length
of the Murray River. Rich in fossils, flora and
fauna, Big Bend is believed to be up to 20
million years old. On a Big Bend by Night
nocturnal tour, you can see a number of native
animals, such as wombats and kangaroos,
going about their nightly business.
Ask a local.
“The Murray River, Lakes & Coorong
is an accessible and affordable
getaway, just an hour from Adelaide.
It’s a chance for people to spend time
together, mates wakeboarding, family
day out, houseboating or just getting
away to the shack! Imagine that
feeling of that last wakeboard before
the sun goes down, followed by the
sounds of friendship as the barbeque
starts to sizzle!”
Mannum
map reference E3
Mannum is a one hour and 15 minute drive
from Adelaide via the South Eastern Freeway,
or you can take the scenic route through
Gumeracha, Birdwood and Palmer. Mannum
is the birthplace of the Murray River paddlesteamer,
including the first one ever built, the
Mary Ann, constructed in 1853 by Captain
William Randell and launched from Noa No
Landing, five kilometres from the present site
of Mannum.
The Mannum Visitor Information Centre is
the gateway to the Mannum Dock Museum
where visitors can discover the history of the
river. Blacksmith brothers John and David
Shearer contributed to the settlement of
Mannum after they established their farm
machinery factory where they created a
string of inventions. In fact, in 1897, David
Shearer produced one of the first two cars in
Australia, which featured a differential gear in
an enclosed case.
There is a free 24 hour ferry service that
enables you to cross the river at Mannum.
Attractions
Mannum has a beautiful riverfront and
excellent recreational facilities, including Mary
Ann Reserve, which is home to a playground,
boat ramp, picnic tables and kiosk. Visitors
can hire water skis, canoes and knee-boarding
equipment; relax on a cruise; or simply drop a
Mannum Dock Museum is home to the
PS Marion, a restored 115 year-old paddlesteamer,
as well as displays on the history of
the river, an art exhibition and fossil collection.
Mannum’s attractive main street has an art
gallery, antiques, craft and bric-a-brac shops,
along with a good choice of cafés and hotels,
some of which offer quality riverfront dining.
To find out more about the town’s history
take the Randell Walk, Shearer Walk or Arnold
various historical sites – pick up a brochure
from the Mannum Visitor Information Centre.
Mannum Waterfalls feature easy and
moderate level walking tracks that pass
winter-flowing waterfalls, abundant birdlife
and interesting rock formations.
Mannum and surrounds are the base for
some significant fossil sites, including Shell
Hill, which is home to a collection of oyster
shells that are millions of years old. Shell
fossils can also be seen in the cliff face in the
Shearer car park, located in the main street of
“Pancakes, bacon and eggs on a
early mornings and the alluring smell
with river holiday life. Punyelroo Cave is
one of my favourite places to visit – you
Tungkillo
64 kilometres from Adelaide
map reference E2
This pretty settlement sits on the border
of the Murray River, Lakes & Coorong and
Adelaide Hills regions, with several choices
of bed and breakfast accommodation and a
friendly country pub. Tungkillo is also one of
the main towns on the Lavender Federation
Trail, a 105 kilometre walking trail that begins
in Murray Bridge and ends in the Barossa.
Palmer
73 kilometres from Adelaide
map reference E2
A small, yet busy, community set in the
foothills between Mannum and Tungkillo,
Palmer offers some surprisingly different
scenery – many of the limestone rocks that
cover the hills surrounding Palmer have
been painted over the years and are muchloved
local landmarks. Look out for the most
infamous character on the hill, Palmer’s very
own Bear Rock, and see what other creatures
you can find among the rocks as you wind
your way through the hills.
Palmer is home to the sculpture landscape
of artist Greg Johns – contact the hotel for
details. The town is also home to the Palmer
Sculpture Biennial – the biennial exhibition
(next held in 2014) includes emerging, up and
coming and established artists from Australia
and overseas.
Younghusband
128 kilometres from Adelaide
map reference F3
A small popular settlement, Younghusband
boasts a picturesque river reserve. There’s
a panoramic view of Lake Carlet from the
top of the cliffs behind the caravan park and
four kilometres from town is an authentic
Aboriginal canoe tree.
Sedan
99 kilometres from Adelaide
map reference F1
Once a busy railway town, complete with a
steam flour mill and an agricultural machinery
factory, Sedan was settled in the 1850s by
Lutherans seeking religious freedom outside
Europe. Surrounded by dry-stone walls built
by early settlers, the historic town of Sedan
is home to many 19th century buildings in
excellent condition. The best way to discover
the town is to follow the Sedan Heritage Trail.
Cambrai
89 kilometres from Adelaide
map reference E2
Originally known as ‘Rhine Villa’, Cambrai
is now a thriving farming district. The
nearby Marne Weir marks the start of the
Marne River Valley Scenic Tourist Drive.
Tailem Bend
98 kilometres from Adelaide
map reference F4
Located at the junction of the Dukes, Princes
and Mallee highways, Tailem Bend is a popular
rest-stop for drivers travelling from the north,
south-east or Western Australia.
There are two explanations as to how Tailem
Bend earned its name: the Indigenous version,
which claims Tailem Bend originated from
the word ‘thelum’ referring to the bend in the
river; or those who argue that tail ‘em is linked
to tailing lambs.
of interest for travellers. Tailem Bend is also
a major grain centre – look out for huge silos
and bunkers that dominate the town.
The Tailem Bend Visitor Information Centre
details the town’s strong historical links with
transport. For a fascinating step back in time
into an original Mallee township, visit Old
Tailem Town, comprising over 110 authentic
historic buildings from the area.
Tailem Bend also provides a great starting
point for 4WD adventures into Mount Rescue
or Ngarkat conservation parks and offers a
fantastic base for a Murray River adventure.
The opening of the Melbourne to Adelaide
railway line in 1886 saw Tailem Bend become
an important railway town. Today, it’s a
commercial centre for the surrounding Mallee
area and offers excellent facilities and points
The first South Australian ferry on the Murray
could cross the river in SA for many years.
Wellington is home to one of the oldest
to the Coorong National Park and the lakes
system at the mouth of the Murray.
A strong wooden boat-building tradition
continues in Goolwa, with the wharf hosting
the biennial Wooden Boat Festival and
shipwrights often seen at Armfield Slip
working at their craft.
Explore the local waterways by taking a cruise
on the lower Murray River or an eco-cruise
into the Coorong. Australia’s oldest railway,
commissioned in 1854, still runs a historic
passenger service between Goolwa, Port
Elliot and Victor Harbor. Goolwa also fronts the
Southern Ocean where a sand dune boardwalk
provides great coastal views and cocklers can
gather cockles on the beach. The beach can
be reached by 4WD (take note of tide times
and warning signs at Goolwa Beach) and is a
popular surf spot.
This is where old meets new, with a
monument at the island’s highest point
symbolising where Captain Charles Sturt and
Collet Barker stood when they identified and
mapped the Murray Mouth. This site now
overlooks the Southern Hemisphere’s largest
freshwater marina development, including
waterfront residences and a large marina.
Now part of the Coorong National Park, in
winter there are whole fields of grazing black
the area home. The highlight of any visit here
is to marvel at the Murray Mouth, impeded by
a twisting, shifting mass of sand banks.
WINES INSPIRED BY OUR LIFESTYLE
Be amongst the first to experience wine tasting on
the Murray River at Caudo Vineyards. Boasting a
worldwide reputation, our cellar door is located
metres from the beautiful Murray River and its rustic
feel blends in perfectly to its surroundings. If you don’t
feel like having a wine, just stop by for a freshly ground
coffee whilst overlooking the beautiful Murray River.
If you’re not a wine or coffee buff don’t worry, we have
you covered! Have one of our refreshing lagers and
pair it up with a tasting platter. Perfect for hot days
on the river. When travelling from Waikerie, Cadell or
Morgan by boat this is the perfect destination to pull
up and sample some of the local produce, even get a
vineyard tour. The vast lawn area provides the perfect
setting by the river to enjoy a bottle of wine or two.
Located 25 km from Waikerie on the Waikerie–Cadell
Road on the right hand side.
