used in CNC machined bores for
optimum alignment and fit.
• Constant pressure stainless steel springs
and large, oversize brushes maximize
brush life. Optimum commutation is
developed even with the most
demanding applications.
• Class F UL recognized insulation system.
High temperature magnet wire is coupled
with superior trickle varnish system.
• High energy ceramic magnets are specified
for high starting torque and reduced
operating temperatures.
• Dynamically balanced armatures in two
planes for low vibration and minimal
audible noise.
GENERAL
INFORMATION
• High pressure, die cast end shields are
machined for precision alignment and
bearing fit, allowing accurate brush tracking
and minimal vibration.
• Shielded ball bearings (permanently
lubricated, electric motor grade) maximizes
operating life and overhung load capability.
Preload spring minimizes end play, reducing
vibration and noise.
• External access to extended life brushes
eases inspection and maintenance.
• Brass cartridge style brush holders are used
in CNC machined bores for optimum
alignment and fit.
• Constant pressure stainless steel springs and
large, oversize brushes maximize brush life.
Optimum commutation is developed even
with the most demanding applications.
• Diamond turned commutator with fusion
bonded tang welding for maximum
reliability and long life.
• Class F UL recognized insulation system.
High temperature magnet wire coupled
with superior trickle varnish system.
• High energy ceramic magnets for high
starting torque and reduced operating
temperatures.
• Dynamically balanced armatures in two
planes for low vibration and minimal
audible noise.
• Internal tie bolts for maximum strength and
appearance.
• Baked on epoxy powder coat paint finish
in high gloss black, for durability and
maximum heat transfer.
• Drilled and tapped (10-32) armature shaft
for encoder mounting or available
shaft extension kit.
• Precision machined cast aluminum gearcase
with reinforcing webs and thick side
walls for greater integrity. Precision gear
centers are required to minimize noise and
maximize life.
• Oil Bath Lubrication: Bearing and gear life
are maximized with oil bath lubrication.
Bearings keep our gearing right on pitch
line, insuring maximum reliability and quiet
power transmission.
• All position mounting: Bison’s gear motors
are non-vented, allowing all position
mounting. The gearcases are oil filled for
lifetime lubrication.
• Heat treated steel geartrain: Bison’s
pinions, gears, and output shaft are all heat
treated to maximize durability ratings for
long life. Seal areas are hardened and
ground for optimum sealing.
• Spring loaded lip seal mates with a
hardened and ground output shaft for
maximum seal life.
• Baseplate available in different heights,
can also be mounted on top of gearcase for
flexibility in mounting.
Precision Gearing
GEAR SLUGS: Gear Slugs are produced
from bar stock on automated band saws
and stored in appropriately sized kan-bans.
GEAR BLANKS: Gears are blanked on high
precision CNC turning centers and inspected in
accordance with the quality plan located at each
work center. Particular emphasis is placed in
maintaining parallel gear faces and minimizing
run-out between the gear face and bore.
GEAR HOBBING: Fully automated gear hobbing
combined with carbide cutting tools produces gearing
that meets a minimum of AGMA grade 9. Gears are
analytically inspected on a computer controlled Hofler
ZP250 for profile, lead, and spacing. Gears are also tested
on a variable center distance gear tester and checked for
tooth thickness by measurement over wires. This process is
imperative to obtain smooth, quiet, chatter-free gear operation.
HEAT TREATING: After hobbing, most Bison gears
are induction hardened to increase strength and
prolong gear life. Induction hardening is a process
of hardening a ferrous alloy by heating it above the
transformation range by means of electrical induction,
and then cooling as required. With the appropriate
induction equipment, this method selectively controls the
heating pattern thereby producing a gear with properties not
available with other heat treat processes.
PARALLEL SHAFT
GEARMOTORS
• Die cast end shields are machined
for precision alignment and bearing
fit, minimizing radial deflection.
• Shielded ball bearings (permanently
lubricated, electric motor grade) on
motors maximizes overhung load
capability. Preload spring minimizes
end play, reducing vibration and noise.
• Class B UL recognized insulation
system: High temperature copper
winding and insulation system with
superior varnish system enhances
motor life.
• High pressure die cast rotor is heat
shrunk to a precision machined motor
shaft and dynamically balanced for
minimal vibration and audible noise.
• Fan and fan shroud provide maximum
airflow, minimizing motor
temperature rise. Fan shroud vents
meet UL safety requirements.
• Large junction box on all AC motors
has multiple knockouts, providing
wiring flexibility. The junction box
is also capable of housing the
capacitor supplied on all permanent
split capacitor motors.
• Rear shaft extension for brake mount
option is standard.
• Baked-on epoxy powder coat paint
finish in high gloss black, for durability
and maximum heat transfer.
• Precision machined cast aluminum
gearcase, with reinforcing webs and
thick side walls for greater integrity.
Precision gear centers are required to
minimize noise and maximize life.
• Oil bath lubrication: Bearing and
gear life are maximized with oil bath
lubrication. Bearings keep our
gearing right on pitch line,
insuring maximum reliability and
quiet power transmission.
• All position mounting: Bison’s gear
motors are non-vented, allowing all
position mounting. The gearcases are
oil filled for lifetime lubrication.
• Precision hobbed gearing meets a
minimum of AGMA grade 9.
• Heat treated steel geartrain: Bison’s
pinions, gears, and output shafts are
all heat treated to maximize
durability ratings for long life. Seal
areas are hardened and ground for
optimum sealing.
• Heavy duty bearings: More efficient
than bronze sleeves, Bison needle
bearings increase load handling
capability and lengthen service life.
Polished steel ball thrust bearings are
used to prevent axial shaft movement
of gear assemblies.
• Spring loaded lip seal mates with a
hardened and ground output shaft
for maximum seal life.
Bison Pinions
PINION BLANKS: Bison’s
integral pinion blanks are
produced on high precision
CNC turning centers. This
maintains concentricity
between the pinion outer
diameter and bearing
journals. Since Bison
pinions ride on needle or
ball bearings, the bearing
journals are typically ground
to within .0002”- .0005”.
Perfection
DRIVEN
1-800-AT-BISON
PINION HOBBING:
Similar to gear hobbing,
carbide cutting tools
on automated hobbing
machines produce pinions
that meet a minimum of
AGMA grade 9. Since quiet
operation is important,
pinions are inspected on a
computer controlled gear
checker for profile, lead,
and spacing. Pinions are also
tested on a variable center
distance gear tester and
checked for tooth thickness
by measurement over wires.
HEAT TREATING:
After hobbing, most Bison
integral pinions undergo
a hardening process
called carbonitriding.
Carbonitriding is a process
where a ferrous alloy is
case hardened by first
being heated in a gaseous
atmosphere. The alloy
absorbs carbon and nitrogen
simultaneously. The resulting
carbonitrate layer offers a
hardened, wear resistant
surface and improves fatigue
strength. Carbonitriding
is also advantageous with
regard to cost as it is well
suited for mass production.
• High pressure, die cast end shields are machined
for precision alignment and bearing fit, allowing
accurate brush tracking and minimal vibration.
• Shielded ball bearings (permanently lubricated,
electric motor grade) maximizes operating life
and overhung load capability. Preload spring
minimizes end play, reducing vibration and noise.
• External access to extended life brushes eases
inspection and maintenance.
• Brass cartridge style brush holders are used in
CNC machined bores for optimum alignment and
fit.
• Constant pressure stainless steel springs and
large, oversize brushes maximize brush life.
Optimum commutation is developed even with
the most demanding applications.
• Diamond turned commutator with fusion bonded
tang welding for maximum reliability and long
life.
• Class F UL recognized insulation system. High
temperature magnet wire coupled with superior
trickle varnish system.
• High energy ceramic magnets for high starting
torque and reduced operating temperatures.
• Dynamically balanced armatures in two planes
for low vibration and minimal audible noise.
• Internal tie bolts for maximum strength and
appearance.
• Baked on epoxy powder coat paint finish, high
gloss black, for durability and
maximum heat transfer.
• Drilled and tapped (10-32) armature shaft for
encoder mounting or available shaft
extension kit.
• Precision machined die cast aluminum gearcase,
incorporates cooling fins for efficient heat
dissipation.
• Oil bath lubrication: Bearing and gear life are
maximized with oil bath lubrication. Bearings
keep our gearing right on pitch line, insuring
maximum reliability and quiet power
transmission.
• All position mounting: Bison’s gear motors are
non-vented, allowing all position mounting.
The gearcases are oil filled for lifetime
lubrication.
output shaft for maximum seal life.
• Baseplate, available in different heights and
competitive mounting styles. May be mounted
on end of motor for vertical mounting. Side
flange mounting is also available.
• Bronze worm gear is cast directly onto the
output shaft, then machined and hobbed,
reducing variation and improving efficiency.
• Oversized ball bearings: Our output shaft is
supported with the largest bearings in the
industry, allowing maximum life on high radial
load applications. Easily manages high shock
loads and shaft mis-alignment problems, with
reduced audible noise.
• Hollow output shaft: Maximum flexibility
in mounting configurations reduces total drive
envelope. Eliminates couplings and is selfaligning.
Multiple shaft diameters are available.
• Machined concentric pilot on both sides of
gearcase for additional mounting options.
• Heat treated and polished worm gear for
efficient power transmission.
VARIABLE SPEED CONSTANT TORQUE
Sturdy. Reliable. Efficient.
Three words that have defined Robusticity for more than 45
years now define Bison’s Inverter Duty Series Gearmotors. For
applications where greater efficiencies or for heavy inverter
service are required, Bison’s premium-efficiency inverter duty
gearmotors consistently deliver Bison durability.
Inverter Duty from Bison, a new standard in Robusticity .
Inverter Duty AC Gearmotors
IMPORTANT GUIDELINES
• Maximum cable length between inverter drive and motor
not to exceed 50 feet. Longer cable lengths may require
special filters.
• 10:1 Constant Torque Speed Range.
• 1.5:1 Constant Horsepower Range.
• Gearmotors will provide rated torque at low frequency inputs
with proper voltage boost. Boost must be adjusted to prevent
cogging or stall conditions.
• UL and CUL marked for construction.
• Signal type thermostat leads provided.
GENERAL
INFORMATION
• Shielded ball bearings (permanently
lubricated, electric motor grade)
on motor maximize overhung load
capability. Preload spring minimizes
end play, reducing vibration and noise.
• Class F UL recognized insulation
system designed to meet NEMA MG
1 Section 31 offer superior protection
against voltage spikes induced by
variable frequency drives, enhancing
system life.
• High pressure die cast rotor is heat
shrunk to a precision machined motor
shaft and dynamically balanced for
minimal vibration and audible noise.
• Fan and Fan Shroud provide
maximum airflow, minimizing motor
temperature rise. Fan shroud vents
meet UL safety requirements.
• Large junction box has multiple
knockouts, providing wiring flexibility.
• Thermostat leads (signal type,
normally closed) provide overload
protection when coupled with the
proper inverter.
• Rear shaft extension for brake mount
option.
• Baked on epoxy powder coat paint
finish, high gloss black, for durability
and maximum heat transfer.
DUAL SCR CHASSIS
The M2 drive provides the power of two drives in one! Now with one DC drive, you can
control two different DC motors either independently or in a ratio mode. In independent
mode, each side of the M2 can be controlled differently with different trimmer pot settings
and different speeds. In speed ratio mode, one speed potentiometer sets the main speed
while the other one determines the ratio of the speeds between the motors. In this mode,
the drive replaces two single drives and possibly a separate master/follower card resulting
in extreme cost and panel space savings!
ISOLATED SCR DC
The PCM20000A Series of drives are a cost-effective solution for variable speed, process control applications
from 1/20 to 2 Hp. The PCM21010A and PCM23001A are SCR drives that integrate isolation allowing them
to accept external analog process control signals. Alternative solutions require users to wire a separate
isolation card to the drive which adds cost and reduces available space.
ISOLATED SCR DC
The MM300 and MM500 Series of dual-voltage single quadrant SCR drives control 90 or 180 VDC SCR
brush-type motors ranging from 1/20 Hp through 5 Hp. The MM311U, MM301U, and the MM501U drives
have integrated isolation allowing them to precisely follow analog current or voltage signals from external
devices or a potentiometer as a reference for motor speed control. This results in significant labor and
material cost reduction compared to other systems employing a separate drive and isolation card.
ISOLATED SCR DC
The MM-PCM Series drive accepts non-isolated voltage (0-10VDC) or current (4-20mA) signals coming
from an in-plant process, programmable logic controller, motion controller, etc. to control speed. A quick
connect removable terminal block allows users to quickly detach the drive without disconnecting the
wires from the terminal block. Also included are optically-isolated normally-closed stop and normallyopen
start inputs. These allow remote starting and stopping of the motor with switches or pushbuttons.
For cost-sensitive variable-speed applications requiring outstanding performance, Minarik offers the
MM31700 Series of SCR drives. These light-weight compact drives control DC brush-type motors ranging from
Minarik’s XL Series of filtered pulse-width-modulated (PWM) variable-speed DC drives
provide exceptional performance. They output nearly pure DC power to brush-type motors
ranging from 1/20 to 3 Hp. Drives accept 120 or 240 VAC input to output 0 to 130 or 240
VDC, respectively; resulting in higher speeds from standard 90 or 180 VDC SCR duty motors.
This innovative technology lets users operate many low voltage motors with only minor
Minarik’s DLC600 precisely controls your closed loop application speed. The DLC600’s dual
voltage capability allows it to replace Minarik’s older DLC products. An encoder or proximity
switch, hall effect sensor, or electromagnetic pickup can provide the necessary feedback. Any
engineering units, from revolutions per minute, to widgets per day can be used to display and
program the speed. The large 4-digit LED display allows you to easily see exactly what speed
you are running. When it comes to low-cost closed loop control, the DLC600 is your solution.
DIGITAL CONTROLS
Minarik’s VT8 Series is the choice when it comes to digital tachometers.
The VT8 Series provides a simple and accurate readout for any object that has an optical
encoder, magnetic pickup, or anything else that can generate a frequency related to what
you wish to measure.
There are four modes to choose from: tachometer mode for speed in any engineering unit,
time in process for indicating the duration of an application, the inverse of speed (such as
minutes per revolution), and basic totalizer for counting the frequency of the speed sensor.
Since most Bison gearboxes are oil
lubricated for life, we understand
the importance of precision ground
seal areas. Bison shafts are hardened
prior to grind in order to minimize
wear on the seal journal. After heat
treat, shafts are plunge ground
on an automated grinding wheel,
maintaining tight tolerances on
grind diameter, lead, surface finish,
and roundness. This superior seal
grind coupled with spring loaded lip
seals provides dependable, leak-free
performance and the flexibility to
mount all Bison gearmotors in any
orientation.
