its habitat. Since this species<br />

was listed, the <strong>Base</strong> has instituted<br />

measures for avoidance and<br />

minimization of impacts to the<br />

<strong>Camp</strong> <strong>Pendleton</strong>’s <strong>Base</strong> Order P3500.1N (Range and Training Regulations). Management<br />

details, survey information, etc., for the Stephens’ kangaroo rat are located in Appendix F,<br />

Section F.19.<br />

Global<br />

The geographic distribution of the<br />

Stephens’ kangaroo rat includes the<br />

San Jacinto Valley and adjacent<br />

areas of western Riverside,<br />

southwestern San Bernardino, and<br />

northwestern San Diego counties.<br />

The entire geographic range of the<br />

Stephens’ kangaroo rat is estimated<br />

to be 1,108 square miles (287,000<br />

ha). Most of the range occurs in<br />

western Riverside County, and<br />

extends into northern San Diego<br />

County, and perhaps southwestern<br />

San Bernardino County. Although<br />

historically present, the Stephens’<br />

kangaroo rat may no longer occur in<br />

<strong>Chapter</strong> 3 – <strong>Natural</strong> <strong>Resources</strong> 3-57
