President’s Report
In early February Jan and I were
honoured to have been invited to the
Wanaka Gun Club 50th anniversary.
On Friday night we had the dinner
and presentations which involved the
induction of two life members. Peter
Cooke and Ray Anderson received
the medals for outstanding service
to the club going right back to the
beginning. This is a club that is lucky
enough to own its own 43 acres of
land, clubrooms and over the years has
replaced most of the traps with new
and also built new lanes, traphouses
and skeet towers. The club has a very
good base of workers that want to make
it work and have succeeded in later
years. Congratulations to Wanaka and
its members for this achievement and
thank you for the enjoyable weekend.
The stories from the older members on
the goings on over the years are great
to listen to. The shoot on Saturday
was very well supported from far and
wide with present and well-travelled
members attending.
On a sadder note the Stewart Island
club is no longer. With only one official
member, Russell (Badger) Squires and
with Ron (Fatty) Dennis leaving the
island, it was decided to close the club
down. For those who have attended the
Island shoots over the last 25 years, I’m
sure that many a memory can be had.
The infamous Joe Cave Ball Trap which
could be called ‘The Beast’, the crayfish
and mussels at will while the shooting
was on, and, of course, the odd tipple
at the after match function. I’m sorry to
see it all go and I wish Ron and Russell
all the best in the future and thanks for
a good time.
Late last year New Zealand was
awarded the World English Sporting
Clay Shoot. Whilst we were in Ireland
we put the case forward to the World
Body and were duly awarded the
championship. The application was put
in on behalf of the TVDA. This will be a
huge undertaking and will need plenty
of support from all quarters. The time
of year still has to be determined but
should be in the early part of 2011.
Recently TVDA held the 5 stand and
Nationals at Paeroa. Twenty squads
of National and International shooters
were treated to a great week’s shooting
of well-set targets and a well-run shoot.
I was rapt to see Barry Williamson attend
and shoot and assist our sponsors. Jeff
Wells, a well known sporting shooter,
was once again a generous sponsor of
the week under the banner of Kilwell.
Martin Coe, once again with his Beretta
New Zealand Company, generously
sponsored two guns for HOA 5 stand
and Sporting, the guns going to Des
Coe and Paul Dunnett respectively.
Special thanks to both sponsors from
the shooters and the NZCTA for their
continued support.
Still on Sporting, the next big event is
the FITASC Oceania Championships to
be held at Rotorua. A busy time for the
shooters and organisers. Good luck to
all those who attend.
At the Secondary School Nationals
and more recently the Sporting Clay
Nationals, it became evident that
Secretary’s Notes
Postal Shoots:
Results for the Hawkes’ Bay Shield postal
event must be sent to the National
Office no later than 5th March. The
Office will be unattended from Friday
27th February so please either ensure
they are at the Office before this date
or give them to me at the DTL Nationals
as the results will be announced on
Friday 6th at the NZ Points Score
Championships presentations.
Club shoot Results:
All clubs are asked to email their
club results to the National Office,
rather than send in paper copy. This
should be sent as a Word Document
attachment. The format for these is
outlined in the “Advice for Clubs about
Gunshot reports and results” that is on
the NZCTA Rules and Forms page on
the web site. Thank you to all the clubs
who send results in this way.
people have not been making sure that
any score they shoot at matches must
be entered on their handicap card. This
leads to embarrassment and frustration
when people feel they should be picked
in a team or have a higher ranking. It
is the shooter’s responsibility to make
sure they have their score entered
correctly.
Late January saw one of the best
turnouts for a long time at the North
Island DTL Championships held at
Waikato. 175 shooters stretched the club
to the max but all the Southland boys
said it was one of the best they have
been to. Great weather, good targets,
good camaraderie and all with brilliant
shootoffs. 52% of the Single Rise entries
shot possibles with the shootoff going
to 497 over 2 days. Congratulations
to Colin Waghorn and commiserations
to Tony Truss, a fantastic effort. And
the High Gun for the weekend, just 2
points down, would be one of the best
ever scores. Congratulations to Ross
Ellis from Tauranga for his efforts.
Things have been pretty quiet on the
home front recently but with a pretty
full on couple of months ahead of us
I look forward to getting back into
it. I always enjoy the Nationals and
look forward to catching up with the
shooters from the other end of the
country.
Clay Target Shooting
Association of New Zealand
Re: World DTL Trap Championship
South Africa 12 th to 21 st March 2010
For those shooters who attended the team dinner at the last
World DTL Championship which was held in Banagher, Ireland,
you may recall the comments I made regarding the next event,
scheduled for March 2010 in Cape Town, South Africa.
For the benefit of those National Team shooters who did not
attend the team dinner and naturally also for the hundreds of
shooters who were not even in Ireland for that Championship
event, I would like to pass on some exciting information about
the World DTL Trap Championship to be held in South Africa.
At the tip of the African continent, Cape Town has become
recognized as being one of the top tourist cities in the world,
ranked alongside Rio de Janeiro, Sydney, Singapore, San
Francisco and many other similar cities which enjoy glorious
beaches close to beautiful mountains. Cape Town has become
a cosmopolitan city, since large numbers of European and
British based people have invested in property overlooking
the Atlantic Ocean, for, what to them, has been small money.
The Valley Gun Club is situated a scant 30 km from the city
of Cape Town, close to the towns of Paarl and Stellenbosch,
which lie in the heart of the South African winelands and are
surrounded by world class beauty. The club is arguably the
Country’s premier Clay Target Club with over 200 members,
who enjoy all disciplines of Clay busting, including the Olympic
disciplines.
Whilst I am passionate about the Cape, the winelands, and
the Mountains and Valleys, as the President of the Clay Target
Shooting Association of South Africa I should be better qualified
to promote the shoot rather than the tourist attractions, so let
me say that the Valley Gun Club management, main committee
and all of the sub-committees which have been formed have
been hard at work for over a year already, to ensure that they
present a shoot by which all future shoots will be judged.
A more dedicated team of professional people will be hard
to find anywhere on the globe. At least three of their senior
management team attended both of the last two DTL World
Championships - in Wagga Wagga 2006 and Banagher 2008
- in order to observe what to do, or not to do.
All the ranges will be in place; a total of 12 for the shoot, plus
two as permanent practice ranges which will be open during
shooting for those who wish to simply calm nerves with a quick
10 shots before their event. All traphouses are equipped with
new traps and the supplier will be on hand with replacement
machines in the unlikely event of any breakdown.
Ammunition will be on sale at the range, both from the club,
which is a licenced “dealer” and from normal traders who
will have their facilities in a “tent town” for vendors. A secure
facility for gun storage will be available at the range for peace
of mind for all shooters when they leave the range at the end
of each day’s shooting.
The shoot program is in the final stages of completion and
should be on the website during March 2009. Please visit
www.ctsasa.co.za which will provide you with a link to the
Valley Gun Club and the World DTL Championships. The shoot
program will include the South African Trap Championships in
both ATA single barrel, and DTL, providing good practice for
the World DTL Championship. There will also be a number of
side “fun” events to keep all shooters happy.
Perhaps the most compelling reason for you to very seriously
consider pressing the “entry” button on the website, is the
cost factor. At the time of writing, the Australian dollar and
the New Zealand dollar are each worth around 6 to 7 of our
South African Rands. Simply stated, this equates, for example,
to a beer costing, in a good restaurant, about R12, or in your
terms, about A$ 1,80. A really good meal in a great, world
class restaurant, at about R200 a head, equates to about
A$25 – A$30. The value for money proposition for our foreign
visitors is absolutely awesome.
Accommodation in high standard Bed and Breakfast type
establishments should cost around R300 per person per night,
or $42. Naturally, for the well heeled, superior International
level 5 Star hotels are also available in Cape Town at (to us!)
staggering prices! The Cape Town Waterfront – known as the
“V & A” Waterfront after Victoria and Albert – is the model from
which all International Waterfront developments have been
based. It contains dozens of good restaurants, shopping malls
and hotels and is a great place to chill out in an internationally
recognized tourist haven.
Most importantly for families, the levels of crime are nowhere
near what some grossly overstated bad press has given South
Africa. We do have crime here, as does every major city in
the world. Wherever I have travelled, I have had friends or
work colleagues warn me to stay away from certain areas.
Cape Town and environs are no different, as is the rest of
South Africa. We offer the opportunity for a fantastic holiday
for shooters and their families and would urge those shooters
who are considering the trip, to bring your wives, partners and
children. You will have a holiday of a lifetime at remarkably
affordable costs.
If you have any questions at all, please use the facilities
provided by the internet and make contact either directly to
Valley Gun Club, or to The Clay Target Shooting Association
of South Africa.
We look forward to seeing you and your families in the Cape
in March 2010. Don’t delay - book your flights NOW!
Yours in shooting
2009
National
5 Stand
and Sporting Nationals
Thames Valley Deerstalkers in Paeroa were the hosts for this
year’s North Island and National events and it was an absolutely
outstanding effort by everyone concerned that brought about
this fabulous week of sporting shooting.
The grounds were impressive as they always are and the variety
of targets on offer to over 100 shooters each day was superb.
This was the first time TVDA had ever run a 5 Stand event
However they went out of their way to ensure that this event.
would be a real success nevertheless, and certainly nobody
was disappointed. Many thanks must go to Albie Hanson as
the NZCTA representative for his endless help, support and
assistance in ensuring the success of these events. The week
long championships kicked off with the North Island 5 Stand
event on Sunday 1st February and were followed the next day
by the NZ 5 Stand Nationals, both events seeing a very worthy
winner in Des Coe from Matamata. Des shot a superb 92/100
at the North Island event and followed this up with a 91/100
on more difficult targets but shot in even hotter conditions
than the previous day. Sudden wind shifts on the second day
of shooting produced a completely different set of challenges
for club staff but Des’s outstanding efforts combined for him
to take out the High Gun which was a Beretta shotgun and
proudly presented by Beretta’s Martyn Coe.
Two days of rest for the shooters followed as the TVDA team
worked tirelessly to produce a completely different field for
the North Island Sporting Clay Championships which were
held on the 5th of February. This event was competed for
under the ‘new style FITASC’ rules which saw an amazing
field of 20 shooting stations and 60 traps being in use. Many
thanks must go to the other clubs that helped with the supply
of traps to ensure that this event could be held – the excellent
team effort and rapport between these clubs is great to see
and very appreciated. The work by the dedicated and skilled
trap mechanics was amazing and they ensured that all targets
were of the highest quality for the full range of shooters at the
event. Tony Truss of Rotorua was the very worthy winner of the
North Island Sporting Championship event after a three-way
shoot off with Paul Dunnett of Matamata and Doug Osborne
of Australia. It was fantastic to see an excellent spread of
shooters from beginners right through to AA graders at the
events and certainly there is a wonderful future in the sport
for many of these shooters.
Thursday night at the host club was a sight to behold as the
workers literally came from nowhere to ensure that Thursday’s
event was transformed into 8 fields of “Old Style FITASC” for the
National Championships events which were held the following
2 days. Yet again the conditions overhead were severe with
temperatures reaching well into the 30’s. However this was
made all the more bearable due to the host clubs commitment
Des Coe, High Gun over both days for the North Island
and NZ 5 Stand Champs with Martyn Coe (Beretta NZ)
to transporting shooters to their various shooting stations for
the duration of the week and for the provision of shade tents
where required. Once again the targets at this event were
completely different and a challenge to the shooter which
kept them on their toes for the entire time – the selection of
targets was probably the best ever presented at a Nationals
(according to a large number of shooters) so there was never
any let up in the commitment required from the shooters. As
the final day drew to a close, the scores were tight at the top
of the table and it wasn’t until the very last squad arrived
back at the clubrooms that the winner was determined with
Chris Parkinson of Wellington returning an excellent score of
180/200 to clinch the National Title that has eluded him for a
number of years.
Once again the Beretta shotgun was the superb High Gun prize
for the Sporting events and this was very deservedly taken
out by Paul Dunnett with a combined score of 263/300.
Congratulations to all the winners throughout the entire
week’s shooting but a big congratulations must go to all the
shooters who entered the competitions – the conditions were
tough and the heat was intense yet the smiles and camaraderie
were constant, so well done to you all. Many thanks also to
Kilwell Sports for their generous sponsorship of prizes to all
the winners for both the 5 stand and sporting championships.
This was very much appreciated by both the shooters and the
Association.
This club can be so proud of the wonderful team effort
that makes these events run so smoothly and watching the
teamwork and interaction between field setters, mechanics
and junior members is proof that the club stands in good stead
for the future as these youngsters, like their counterparts, are
wonderful workers and so polite and courteous.
When planning for a major event, a Club has to take into
consideration just how many people are going to turn up. With
the recession in full swing, school holidays coming to a close,
and a long weekend for everyone Taupo north, Waikato’s
committee’s best guess based on previous experience, was
for 60 – 80 shooters for Saturday, and possibly with a bit of
luck 120 on the more popular DTL day. So you can imagine
our pleasant surprise of 149 shooters turning up for perfect
conditions and targets on the first day, and the board topping
191 on Sunday.
Large numbers are pleasing for the club, as we have done
considerable work on the grounds looking forward to the
upcoming National Championships. At a recent working bee
30 people turned up with their families to help out with their
own skills ranging from cleaning, plumbing, carpentry and
operating all manner of garden implements. We took this as a
sign of a healthy club, and appreciated each and every one of
the people that assisted with their time.
On shoot day, very quickly people settled in under trees and
on the deck making the most of the new layout, and with 101
entries before 10am, you can imagine the increasing frustration
with only 10 people in squads! Still, shooters vote with their
feet, so they obviously wanted to shoot well into the evening,
delaying the presentations to Sunday. The presentations were
carried out prior to the Single Rise shoot off, to a packed
audience, seeing the premier event of High Gun go to Ross
Ellis (Tauranga show pony) with just two points down for the
weekend, arguably a North Island record. The large crowd
present was a sign of respect for a top effort.
Sunday was another picture perfect day, with 50% of people
on the grounds complaining that it was hotter than the day
before, the other 50% shot a possible in the Single Rise. Colin
Waghorn, and Tony Truss took the shoot off into Monday, 497
targets, leading the other 17 squads of shooters that made the
shoot off. Comments were made like “the ‘high dome’ issue is
closed”, and “we should increase the Single Rise to 50-target
qualification”.
Needless to say, Waikato will be welcoming all to shoot early,
and enjoy the upcoming Nationals. Look forward to seeing
you there.
ProvincialsWESTLAND
By Evan Johnston
With the New Year celebrations over,
and some still looking a bit worse for
wear, the South Island’s first yearly
provincial, Westland, this year started
on the Saturday the 3rd January.
This was the 20th Provincials held at
Barrytown and many of the shooters
at the shoot had been at all 20
Provincials.
Unfortunately the weather gods didn’t
come to our aide, well it wasn’t exactly
webbed feet weather, so after the
showers came and went, and the wind
came in just before the sun decided to
show up, it was a mixture of damp bum
and no fish, sun burn and wind burn. No
rain on the Sunday or the Monday so we
all got more sun burn and wind burn.
Sunday night we had or usual BBQ for
all, and much, much later, in the night,
June and Marylyn gave us a floor show,
dancing I think it was, or their rendition
of the laughing policeman with Irish
break-dancing.
But that’s not all, we even had time
to do some shooting and some good
individual results were achieved,
especially the younger ones wearing out
the older ones. It was also very pleasing
to see a squad of CBHS students at the
shoot. A comment was made at the
presentations highlighting this. In fact
this shooter made further comment,
but I won’t mention his name (John
Moore), stating that the Vets’ have done
their job and there is getting more and
more shooters in the Vets grade and it
is getting harder and harder to win and
that the ones in the middle better get
on with the job and start producing; he
was not approached.
Barrytown would like to thank all those
who attended our shoot, and hope they
all enjoyed themselves as much as we
did having their company.
Again Barrytown would like to thank
our secretary Nola Weir who is standing
down after looking after our office. She
Skeet HOA Maurice Horner
will be sadly missed but not forgotten
and I am sure won’t be a stranger. So
from the home of the green flash we
wish you all, good shooting for the rest
of the year, and the results are .....
ProvincialsSOUTHLAND
High Gun Colin Waghorn
The Balfour Gun Club hosted the
Southland Provincials on the 6th and
7th December. The weather was fine
which made shooting conditions very
acceptable for the 75 shooters who
attended. It was very pleasing to see the
visitors from up north who made the
effort to support these championships,
it was also the first time I had seen a
helicopter in the club’s car park.
There are a lot of people that I have to
thank for the smooth running of the
shoot namely those in the office who
helped our secretary and worked the
computer, the kitchen staff, the shooters
themselves for being on the mark on
time and the Balfour Gun Club members
who presented the grounds in such
an immaculate condition, well done
boys. We look forward to running the
provincials again in the next few years.
A big thank you to the Waikato club for allowing us to host
the event at their facilities in conjunction with their own
Christmas shoot. Peter Krippner for cashiering at the office,
Paul Schmidt for mowing around the lanes, Graeme Williams
for his help setting up and loading the trap, Mike Holmes
and Bryce Schou for their help with target setting as well
as everyone who helped with scoring, refereeing and trap
loading during the day.
We condensed the program to just 150 singles with 3 visits
to the trap. There was only one shoot-off between Gordon
Tucker and Paul Schmidt for the ham in A grade. Gordon was
heard commenting that perhaps his training routine the night
before wasn’t quite up to scratch…
This month we had our first shoot at Thames. What a great
start on new grounds. Firstly the ATA would like to extend a
big thank you to Don McCarthy for his help measuring and
pegging the fields and Richard Boenders for measuring the
elevation so we could get the target height consistent across
the four fields. Also, thank you to the Thames crew for their
help on the day loading traps and helping with refereeing and
scoring. Diane Boenders and Sally van de Wetering for running
the office and cashiering the shoot. We also need to say “thank
you” to the club for the very nice condition of the grounds.
What a pleasure to work and shoot with such nice facilities.
SHOOTING MADE EASY
Getting older and adapting your shooting
Slow it down
Carl’s tip
It is a fact that we are all getting older and while in some ways
we can improve with age, I’m afraid that this doesn’t apply to
eyesight and reflexes.
I am reminded of this when I am coaching pupils who are
middle aged and upwards, particular when on a Skeet range.
High two is the target which finds them out, particularly for
those right handers who have to close their left eye. They
don’t see the target clearly until it has gone 10-15 yards, yet
turn back to the trap to call and look for it. What happens is
that they see a blur then race after it and lose all control and
technique.
Exactly the same applies to a quartering Sporting target. Here
a target might be faster and it will be 20-30 yards before it is
clearly picked up by the shooter. The problem is exacerbated
when the shooter is in a squad with younger guns, who have
fast reflexes and 20/20 vision. They smoke the clay, and our
older shooter attempts to do likewise.
My advice in these instances is not to be greedy with your
eyesight. Look where you see the target and don’t be
flamboyant with an open choked gun, but give yourself time.
Try putting _ or full choke into your gun, change your pick-up
point to where you can see the target clearly and in focus.
It doesn’t matter if the hit is not quite so good. You may
have to adapt your style and learn to read targets differently
– ironically a more distant target might not need so much
forward allowance, but maybe a bit more drop.
A good example is Paddy Howe, one of our finest Sporting
shooters. Four or five years ago, in his mid-sixties, he switched
to a tightly choked 32” gun. This was obviously quite radical
for a man who had twice won the British and European with
a 28” Browning. He explained that his reflexes weren’t what
they were so he changed his style, riding targets out further
and taking them later. And he did it with great effect, winning
High Gun overall in a number of competitions. Even this
summer he won European FITASC gold in the super vets with
a very good score.
I’m not suggesting that a 32” trap gun is the answer – they
don’t suit everyone – but just giving an example that you
should be open to change and ready to recognise that your
eyes won’t permit you to do what was once second nature.
Give yourself time.
Veterans too should remember that in major tournaments
particularly, they are competing against other veterans, not
the whole field. So disregard the performances of younger
fellow squad members.
Holding the Lead
Happily, I continue to get some very positive feedback about
this column and I am obviously delighted that so many seem
to enjoy it. Further to last month’s piece about shooting
incomers however, I had one shooter who thought I was
recommending maintained lead.
Some things do not improve with age, but
Carl Bloxham has a cunning plan for those
wishing to maintain their scores.
Paddy Howe switched from a 28” to a 32” gun.
This wasn’t the case, but I can understand what led him to
think this. What in fact I was suggesting was holding some
lead. The incomer is an unusual target in that it can accelerate
at the point at which you might want to shoot it. So I suggest
holding the gun just underneath it so that you can keep it in
view at all times – then take your shot as it stalls and starts to
fall. You will have a clear picture and shoot it comfortably. So
how does this differ from maintained lead?
Maintained lead is having a visual lead of the target from the
gun hold onwards. You mount the gun with lead and pull
the trigger as it hits the shoulder. This can be very useful for
certain types of shot, but you need to master it if you want it
in your repertoire. For instance, if you hit the trigger a split
second slower then you will miss the target. The co-ordination
will have gone. John Bidwell has perfected a variation of this
style and called it Move, Mount, Shoot. He shoots it to a very
high standard.
There are so many variations of style. If I have a squad of
five shooters to coach, the chances are that they will all shoot
differently – CPSA method, swing through, maintained lead,
spot shooting, smoke trail and others which are unidentifiable
(and do them no favours!).
In a practice situation most can be made to work with
reasonable results but under the pressure of competition and
slightly harder targets, those without good technique will
suffer. So I always say ‘what what you practice’.
31 January / 1 February 2009
Tauranga Clay Target Club
Tony Truss from Rotorua Rod and
Gun Club was in splendid form to win
the High Gun (Norm Reeve Memorial
Trophy) as well as High Overall Skeet
and Double Rise.
He was only four points down for the
weekend. Jack Norwood competed on
the Sunday and continues his long run.
Unfortunately he forgot his Handicap
Book again so his claimed long run of
over 1300 targets cannot be verified at
this time. However he shot brilliantly
to win the Single Rise from Councillor
Martin van de Wetering (Weka). We wish
Jack the best of luck for the continuance
of his long run and the establishment of
a new record.
Fine, warm typical Bay of Plenty
weather was evident on both days
of the weekend. We were privileged
to be graced with the presence of all
three North Island Councillors. So the
shoot programme, with the assistance
of the well drilled Team of Committee
Members and Club Members from our
Tauranga Club, headed by President
Jim Dobson, ran smoothly and was
concluded in good time.
The help provided by Sally Van de
Wetering was invaluable and made our
running the office manageable. Martin
use of the forend hand to move the gun,
and that resulted in lost targets.
The ‘understanding’
aspect to good scores
It seems that all trapshooters, no
matter what class they happen to be
in, will have their good days and their
bad days. It just stands to reason that
shooters in the lower classes seem to
have more bad days than those in the
higher classes. While scores may be
relative depending on our class, we are
all able to recognise a bad day or a bad
score when we experience one. What
is more difficult in these situations is
recognising the reasons for bad days or
bad scores and turning them into great
days.
One of the reasons for fewer bad days or
bad scores among AAA shooters is that
they are usually more experienced and
far more consistent in doing what they
need to do to break more targets. It is
that level to strive for, and sometimes
all it takes is time, understanding and
practice. The purpose of this column is
to offer a bit more on the “understanding”
aspect of shooting good scores.
Even great shooters will sometimes
develop a bad habit. They may forget
a simple fundamental or just fall into
a habit that costs them an occasional
target. The problem is, in their class, an
occasional target is enough to lose the
race. I was recently fortunate enough
to watch a great shooter hammering
handicap targets with ease. I was
impressed with his shooting until I saw
him miss a couple of targets because of
a fundamental error. I like to use names
(but never the actual name) of shooters
that I have observed and write about,
so I’ll just call him Smitty, a common
name that could be anyone.
While I was watching Smitty hammering
his targets, I noticed that at times he
failed to shift a bit of his weight to his
front foot. I also noted that every time
he missed a target, he hadn’t shifted his
weight. When he missed a target on Post
1, he used his forend arm to move the
gun toward the target. It was apparent
that Smitty had lost track of this simple
fundamental, and it was costing him
targets.
Whenever you mount the gun prior to
calling for your target, you should shift
a bit of weight to the front leg. For a
right-handed shooter, this is the left
leg; it’s the right leg for a left-handed
shooter. This sound simple enough,
but you also need to understand the
reason for shifting the weight. To begin
with, the feet should be positioned at
shoulder width and comfortable. The
weight shift should be just enough
to have more than 50% of the body’s
weight on that front leg. This will
result in the shooter’s head being over
the front leg. Now when the shooter
mounts the gun and shifts the weight,
he will form a straight line of pivot over
the front foot. He can now lock the gun
into place, and when he calls for his
target, he will pivot to the target. He
will not move the gun with the forend
arm; he will only support the gun with
the forend arm. The gun will be moved
to the target using the pivot.
If a shooter fails to pivot to the target,
Sometimes all it
takes is time,
understanding and
practice.
he will likely find it necessary to use
the forend arm to move the gun to the
target. This could create a situation
where the shot looked pretty good, but
the result was a lost target. The reason
for this is that the shooter’s mount fell
apart when he used the forend arm to
move the gun, and this can change the
point of impact. Some targets will still
be broken when a shooter makes this
fundamental error, but as trapshooters,
we are not after some of the targets –
we’re after all of them. When Smitty
failed to shift his weight forward, he
approached the target flat-footed and
did not pivot his entire upper body
toward the target. This resulted in his
When the weight is shifted to the front
leg and the shooter uses a pivot to
move to the target, he will also find that
he is able to approach the target from
the bottom and have a great view of the
target all the way to the shot. As he
pivots, the gun will automatically come
to the target without the need to lift the
gun up to the target with the forend
hand. If the gun needs to come up,
the pivot will allow it to happen. It will
feel like your moves, especially to angle
targets, are mostly horizontal. This
method does not require the shooter to
hold an exceptionally high gun, but he
should be holding above the traphouse
prior to his call for the target. If a
shooter stands flat-footed – or worse
yet, lets his weight shift to his back
leg – the tendency will be force the gun
to loop toward the target with an arc,
and many times the shooter will lose
sight of the target just as he is about
to shoot.
A left-handed shooter is more likely to
shift his weight to the back foot when
he is standing on posts 1 or 2, while
a right-handed shooter will have this
tendency on posts 4 and 5. The next
time you get the opportunity, with
an empty gun, stand on one of these
posts and simulate your move to a
hard right or left angle while allowing
your weight to rock to your back leg.
You will probably notice that the gun
rises as you make this move and has
a tendency to arc toward the target,
and make it more difficult to see. Now
maintain your weight on the front leg
and pivot toward the simulated target.
You will probably notice that you can
approach the target from the bottom
without the gun looping in an upward
arc. This technique will allow Smitty
and all other shooters a better view of
the target without the clutter of the gun
hiding it. The better you see the target,
the better you will break it.
In order for the pivot to work for you,
good foot positions on each post will be
required. You will want to avoid having
your back turned to the angles, so on
Post 1, a shooter should stand facing
those angles, which will be all left angles.
As you move to each subsequent post,
you will move your stance slightly to
the right progressively. This applies to
both right- and left-handed shooters.
When you arrive on Post 5, you will
again be facing the angle targets, which
are now all right angles. If your stance
doesn’t allow you to pivot toward your
angle targets, adjust it before you end
up using the forend arm to move to
the target. You should feel smooth
Gunshot 25

and controlled when using the pivot.
If anything above the waist moves,
everything above the waist moves. This
will allow you to prevent your mount
from falling apart as you approach your
targets, and your gun will shoot where
you expect it to every time.
Just a simple weight shift should allow
all of us to have fewer bad days and far
more good days on the range. Pivot
to your targets, and you will likely put
more shot on more targets regardless
of what class you may be in.
I would have told Smitty what he was
doing wrong when I first noticed it, but
he’s the kind of guy who would rub it in
if he ended up beating me, so I decided
to make him read the column. I would
like to thank Smitty and all you other
guys whose problems I’ve borrowed.
Without you, I wouldn’t have much to
write about. The names used may be
fictitious, but it seems that everyone
recognises themselves no matter what
name I use.
Thanks, guys.
Wanaka Gun Club 50 th Anniversary report
By 2low8s
On the 4th of March 1959 a group of sportsmen formed a club
for the purpose of clay bird shooting and named it the Wanaka
Gun Club. 50 years later at our Anniversary dinner the original
minutes were read out and any of those gentlemen present at
the first meeting were asked to move that the minutes were a
true record of that meeting.
Mr. George Studholme stood and moved the motion and Mr.
Dick Scaife stood to second the motion. That was the beginning
of a weekend of remembrance and celebration to honour the
people who had gone before us to build our Club.
The dinner was well attended with 70 current and past members
enjoying the fantastic food provided by the Wanaka Airport Café
catering team. Guests of Honour were Jan Burdon, wife of long
serving past Club President Cotty Burdon and NZCTA President
Trevor Manson and his wife Jan. Two of the Club’s previous
Presidents and First Ladies as well Moa Creek President Ned
Kelland and wife Chris made up the official table.
Peter Cooke and Ray Anderson were presented with Club Life
Memberships by Trevor Manson while Mary Anderson and
Patron George Studholme were honoured with 50th Anniversary
Gold medals for their services to the Club.
Saturday 7th. Anniversary shoot day. The weather was fine,
very warm with a constant breeze that didn’t affect the targets
too much.
Jim Haugh, or ‘Gentleman Jim’ was a long serving President of
the Club and the J Haugh Skeet Teams Trophy, which Moa Creek
was due to host, was offered back to us for our Anniversary
shoot. Only two possibles were shot in the 50 target match
with Sam Forsyth and Rex Smart going into a shoot off for the
HOA individual honours with Rex winning.
A five bird eye-opener was followed by a 15 target Single Rise
then a 15 target Points Score match.
Bill Gillespie, an original of the Club, has a 25 target single
barrel trophy in his honour. This was the final of the official
matches for the day and this trophy was presented by Central
Otago Association President Brian Thurlow to Brent Rissman
who also has had a long association with the Wanaka Club.
At the prize giving, Peter Cooke and Ray Anderson received their
silver lapel badges from His Eminence (Trevor). Jan Manson, the
‘First Lady’ of the NZCTA, showed once again that ‘girls can do
anything’ by beating the rest of the field to win the HOA gold
medal for the DTL events.
The High Gun for the day was a three horse race with Donald
Taylor, Bill Jones and Rex Smart tied on 132/135. Donald pipped
Bill at the post while Rex fell at the first fence. Donald has had
a long association with the Club and was very happy to receive
the Cotty Burdon medal which was presented by Jan Burdon.
Mary and Ray Anderson with their awards
Brent Rissman receiving the Bill Gillespie Trophy for Single Barrel
from Brian Thurlow.
Stewart Island Club Closes
Stewart Island, last shoot. Shooters (L-R) Jeff Munro, Trevor Manson, Murray Fosbender,
James Straith Referee (partly obscured), Russell Squires, Ron Dennis.
The twenty five-year history of the Stewart Island club came
to a close in December and was marked by the holding of
their club championships. Twenty shooters attended the
shoot, which was tinged with a note of sadness because of
the closure.
The club started on the Island in 1983 with the enthusiastic
input of Joe Cave and Ron Dennis. An Island identity, Herbie
Hansen senior, made land available for the club’s use. The
site near the airport was cleared and the opening shoot was
very notable with tents providing shelter for the office and
clubrooms. Over the years the members worked very hard
to develop the facilities and at its closure it boasted two DTL
layouts and a skeet field all equipped with automatic traps
and voice release systems and a comfortable clubrooms and
office. Power for the grounds was by way of a generator.
Each year the club held two major shoots, a trophy shoot in
April and the club championships in December. These events
were an integral part of the Southland circuit and were well
attended by shooters from throughout the region. There were
those who made the Stewart Island trip an annual pilgrimage
as well as those who attended not only for the shooting but
also for the uniqueness and beauty of the location.
The Championship programme was not for the faint hearted.
Joe Cave’s notorious Ball Trap held a certain prestige. For
most it was a fearsome event. The excesses of a very social
Friday night and the challenge of Joe’s extreme target settings
were a combination many could not handle first thing on a
Saturday morning. The remaining events, all of which were
twenty five targets with the Double Rise being twenty pairs,
appeared very ‘shootable’ after the Ball Trap experience.
The programme was also enhanced with the addition of the
Hansen and Halligan trophies.
The support from the community was impressive. The island’s
location made freight and transportation just that little
bit more difficult but the consideration given to those who
crossed the water by the Ferry and Air companies was much
appreciated. Visitors were warmly welcomed and their island
experience enhanced by the generous quantities of crayfish,
mussels, blue cod and venison which were so much part of
the weekend. Usually the shoots were held over two days with
the prize giving dinner on the Sunday evening. The South Seas
Hotel was the venue for the dinners and the scrumptious meal
of local delicacies, many of which were donated by the locals,
was a highlight of the weekend. There will be few clubs in
New Zealand who could equal the silverware display at the
presentations. The trophies, all donated by Stewart Island
residents, would be the envy of many. Every discipline and
every grade had a trophy and when set up for the presentation,
the display was spectacular. The presentation table has been
the subject of many tourist holiday snaps.
In the mid nineties, the club had at times ten or twelve
members. This, in recent years has declined to the stage
now where only Russell Squires, the club’s longest serving
secretary, resides on the island. Ron and Irene Dennis are
moving to Invercargill and it is no longer viable for the club
to remain functioning. While this is sad, it is understandable.
We have over the years enjoyed our times on the Island and
thank very sincerely those who have contributed to making
our visits such a pleasurable experience.
The bush will no doubt reclaim the site long before the
memories and stories are forgotten.
Throw a Little
Denzil Lee from Sunglasses for Sport Ltd
explains the features and light conditions
best suited for the array of different
coloured lenses now available.
It is now mandatory for eye-wear to be worn at CPSA registered
shoots and most non affiliated shooting schools and grounds
also enforce the regulation. Lenses for shooting should provide
physical protection, whether from a stray or falling pellet,
but more likely a shard of broken clay. Most will be made
from a polycarbonate plastic because it is shatter resistant
and provides a very high degree of protection. Unlike glass,
however, polycarbonate will easily scratch, so you do need to
take care of your lenses. In adhering to the compulsory rule,
some shooters will simply use clear lenses when you can use
different colour lenses to your advantage.
Ultra Violet protection
Whilst even a clear lens offers a good degree of protection
from harmful solar ultra violet radiation (UVR), most coloured
lenses offer the maximum protection you need. Good quality
eye-wear should meet the industry standard UV400 rating,
which will provide the eyes with substantial protection.
Sunglasses and eye-wear with coloured lenses help eliminate
UVR, in particular the more damaging UVB radiation. As
the eye cannot see UVR, good quality sunglasses have an
important function in blocking it. Excessive exposure over a
long period can damage eyesight, accelerate the development
of a cataract and also cause premature skin aging.
Polarised lenses
A common misconception amongst shooters is that you need
to wear polarised lenses to eliminate glare. Technically, glare
is a way of describing light wave transmission, reflected or
refracted, that is aligned into a directional plane. Light is
referred to as ‘polarised’ when aligned in this way. A polarised
lens will filter direct light and eliminate polarised light.
Because polarised lenses eliminate glare off a flat surface, they
are ideal for activities like sailing, boating, skiing and fishing.
For shooters, a polarised lens does not offer any benefit.
Photochromic lenses
Photochromic or “transition” lenses change colour depending
on light conditions. Typically they start from a very light 10%
colour and darken to around 70 to 80%. Originally they were
only available in glass but recent technology means they are
now available in plastic and polycarbonate.
Which colour for which light
There is undoubtedly a great deal of confusion about what the
different lens colours are for and when they should be used.
The most popular colours are:
• Smoke, also called Grey –reduces all light equally. It does
not increase contrast and is best used in bright conditions
when there is strong or direct sunlight.
• Amber and Brown – are good for virtually all light including
variable conditions because they increase contrast.
• Yellow – greatly improves contrast and especially suited
to poor light, low visibility, dark and cloudy conditions.
• Red, Vermilion, or Rosa, and Orange – are high contrast
colours suitable for most light conditions. Red is a popular
colour with shooters because it will emphasise blaze
(orange) clays especially against a dark background.
• Clear – for protecting eyes from impact, dust, dirt or
abrasion. Clear lenses will still provide a high degree of
UV protection.
• Green – improves contrast but is not as popular as brown
or smoke lenses.
Mirror and revo effect
are fashionable
Red, vermilion or rose
is suitable for most
conditions and will help
pick out blaze clays
Interchangeable sets are
increasingly popular,
giving a choice of lenses
• Mirror and ‘Revo’ – are coatings applied to the front of
the lens, usually applied to a base smoke grey lens. They
are primarily a fashion statement but they do increase
the filtering power by reducing the amount of light
interference, so they are good in strong sunlight.
light
Interchangeable sets
Interchangeable sets have become very popular because
they give a choice of lenses fitting the same frame. They
will typically come with two or three different lenses such as
smoke, yellow and red or vermilion. It means on a dull winter’s
day you can put the yellow lens in and leave it in. If the weather
is a mixture of sun and colour the red lenses will be good,
especially if you are going to be shooting at blaze clays, and in
bright, sunny conditions the smoke lens will be ideal.
Different lenses are one more variable and one more thing to
think about along with chokes and shot sizes. My advice is to
judge the conditions likely to prevail during the shoot and stick
to the one lens colour only. Put them on well before you start
shooting to allow your eyes to adjust and get used to them.
Patangata celebrates
its 50 th Anniversary
Patangata Clay Target Club in central Hawke’s Bay recently
celebrated its 50th anniversary with a special Christmas shoot.
On hand was an original member of the club Doug Ashby. Jim
Meredith and Colin Wood who both joined shortly after the
club started, were also present and are both active shooters
in Hawkes Bay. Doug and Jim presented the club with a new
cup, the Ashby-Meredith 50th Anniversary Cup to celebrate
the event. The cup was won eventually by Geoff Groenveld
after long shoot off from 22m with a young junior member,
Stuart Field.
A field of 63 shooters attended. Some had travelled from as
far as Tauranga to attend the celebration. The club presented
50 hams as well as every shooter receiving a prize and a
commemorative cap.
“The club has always been about joviality” said Dave Hearn the
club captain. On the wall of the club house are six aluminium
clay targets organized by Doug Ashby and loaded especially
for Digger Gunn. Digger had just won a Browning shotgun at
the Champion of Champions shoot and was keen to try it out.
Jim Meredith recalls the sound of the pellets ricocheting off the
targets. After several attempts to break these targets, Digger
was mightily frustrated and while all around him knew that leg
pulling was the order of the day his demeanour became more
and more dark. Some genuine targets made up the last few
birds and he thought he was coming right. Gales of laughter
greeted him when the game was finally up.
Another piece of memorabilia is a “High Gun” presented to
Life Member Pat Beachen with 50 inch barrels made of broom
handles painted black and grafted onto an old side-by-side
stock. Pat was looking forward to this special presentation
from Councillor Ivor Field but Pat’s jaw dropped when he
realized what his award was. He later presented it back to the
club where it remains in pride of place to this day.
In the 60’s, Archie Wortherspoon made a name for himself
at one shoot by having such a high gun position he shot an
overhead power line clean in two. It was suspected that he
wasn’t using standard 8’s with low recoil.
Two new Life Members were presented with their badges for
services to the club, Chris Cassin and Ron Dick.
Patangata has a strong membership with a large number of
New Zealand representatives and National Champions for a
small club. The future looks secure with strong secondary
school support and more champions coming from Central
Hawkes Bay College as well as an active membership who
make a day at Patangata a most enjoyable event.
THAMES VALLEY DISTRICT
BALL TRAP CHAMPIONSHIPS
This annual event on the local calendar was again hosted by
the Thames Clay Target Club on the 16th January 2009. The
day started with some heavy showers but fortunately cleared
into a pleasant but breezy day.
The Thames Valley District Championship is a 100 target event,
shot over 4 rounds of 25. The third round of 25 is also the Club
championship for the year.
A field of 57 shooters entered with 32 in A grade, 16 B graders
and 9 in C grade. These entries included 9 Veterans, 3 Ladies
and 7 Juniors.
The first round had 7 possibles with 2 in C grade from Teagan
Storey and Chris Robinson. The other 5 were in A grade from
Brant Woodward, Ian Marshall, Gary Discombe, Grant Castles
and Martin van de Wetering.
Round 2 had 4 possibles, all in A grade, with Brant and Grant
repeating their earlier feat along with Wayne Cowley and Jack
Norwood.
Round 3 saw 3 possibles, again including Grant and Brant. Joining
them was Mike Hirtzel. This was also the club championship
round, which was eventually won by Brant Woodward.
Heading into the final round there were 2 possible scores of
75 from Grant and Brant. However, neither was able to end
the day with 100 target score. The last round had 4 possibles
from Jack Norwood, Myles Brown-Cole, Ben Mason and Owen
Robinson.
The final result saw Brant Woodward as the overall winner with
an excellent score of 99 for the Thames Valley Championship
to go with the Club Champs win.
Whangarei Combined
The greatest battle though was fought by two “C” Grade shots
from Tauraroa Area School, ably coached by “old hand” Jock
districts Gun Club at Mangapai Hay. Jock has about a dozen new shooters coming on as our
life blood!
6-7 December 2008
Beautiful settled weather greeted us and one could not but
feel very fortunate to be able to take part.
About 9 squads turned up, a reduced number, as we have
seen through the year.
From a shooter’s point of view this is not necessarily a bad
thing as it makes for less waiting time between disciplines.
Particularly Skeet has a habit of holding things up as an
average round takes 20 minutes. With two fields operating the
math is not too hard. If 20 squads turn up it takes 200 minutes
or about 3.5 hours!
However skeet is important as it has been the downfall of
many a DTL specialist.
Skeet: This year NO possibles were shot! It was no real surprise
outcome that A Grader John Dangen (W.C.G.C.) won the event
after a brief shoot off with Andrew Slattery (Whatitiri).
Double Rise: Once again no possibles; Mark Shaw (Kaitaia)
won outright with 19/20.
The minis produced two possibles by Martin van de Wetering
(Thames) and Laurie Coppins (Waitemata). The HOA was taken
out by Martin.
In the Triples again Martin van de Wetering this time met Bill
Becroft (Kaikohe). Martin took that out as well after a 5/5/5/
shoot off.
Day two also promised good scores although changes in light
at our club can often produce the odd ‘Flurry of Misses” and in
the sky there were some pesky old little cotton balls around.
Shoots offs:
Single Rise: S/R promised fireworks (read: long drawn-out
session). 10 “A” graders, 3 ”B” graders and two “C” graders had
shot the possible! As it turned out the business was done in
“A” grade in about half an hour over 3 rounds with Ian Marshall
(Whitianga) HOA. and Ian Hovenden (Waitemata), George
Gee (W.C.G.C.), and Hayden Coote (W.C.G.C) 1st 2nd and 3rd
runners up.
A happy Bill Becroft with the “Perry North Cup” (shooters above
the Warkworth region) and Secretary Toni Gee
In the shortest of times the two boys, Brendon Graham and
Brad Boniface, carried on to the point where we were taking
bets on who would blink first! (They will not be “C” Grade for
long either!). As it turned out Brad had a magnificent second
barrel as at times he had us hold our breath by just about
doing every bird in two shots! (Raise the comb?). In the end he
won too! 48/47.
The two lads and classmates had the widest smiles ever seen
as they were applauded off the field.
Points Score: This was virtually a single barrel contest
between Rob Smith, Logan Campbell, Bill Becroft, Nick Gavin
and Ethan Erceg. First to drop out, after the first five, were
Nick Gavin and Bill Becroft. Of the three shooters remaining
Rob Smith blinked first with a second barrel, after which Ethan
Erceg sealed his fate with a dropped target, to leave up and
coming Logan Campbell as HOA.
Single Barrel: “A” Grade possibles were Dave Wordley, Bill
Becroft, Ian Marshall, Chris Erceg, Ethan Erceg, Bradley Oliver
and Ron Thompson. Two rounds of five on two traps saw the
field whittled down to four. Ian Marshall dropped out first
followed by Chris Erceg. Dave Wordley and Ron Thompson
battled for another 11 targets until Dave missed, making Ron
Thompson the winner! “B” Grade came down to Lois Frame
and Richard Broughton who went for 20 targets until Lois let
Richard win in the end.
A special mention must be made about Bill Becroft who on
day two did not drop a target in the qualifiers. His impeccable
style was just something to watch. Needless to state that he
won the High Gun for the two days. Well done Bill!
SPORTING CLAYS
Well another year has passed, with all
the National Sporting shoots over once
again.
Thanks to TVDA, Maureen, and the
entire hard working club members who
had spent 100’s of hours making this an
event hard to improve on. We had four
different events over five days shooting,
and changing the fields after three
events in the relentless heat conditions
was big job.
Special thanks must go to Maureen for
her tireless work from start to finish,
along with thanks also to Dave Hanner,
Tony Coleman and Albie Hanson, for
the work setting up some of the best
targets seen for all of the events. Having
transport to the fields for the shooters
was a very big plus, and also helped
keep the events on time.
One helpful thing in organizing the
event and has been in the past, is the
postal entries. This helped getting each
day started on time. 19 squads entered
this way which was fantastic.
Once again thanks to Martyn Coe
(Beretta) for the 2 shotguns they
sponsored over the events, and also to
Geoff Wells (Kilwell/Gamebore) for their
sponsorship over all the events. Also
with TVDA adding in the extra prizes
Gun alterations to improve
Fit & Performance
You finally found the model
you want – nice wood and
great promise of propelling
you into B Class. Now what?
This is a classic situation for those of
us searching for the gun to benefit
from our innate abilities and become
an extension of our lightning-fast
reflexes. But, after a round of skeet,
trap or sporting, something is not right.
The target that vaporized with your
“old faithful” was still flying although
the sight picture looked perfect.
For most of us, even finding a shotgun
that holds all that promise will not be
a perfect fit right out of the box. While
gunmakers have your best interest in
mind, they cannot please everyone
every time and, indeed, usually stop
being innovative after the basic design
because they are not “custom shops.”
With the cutting-edge aftermarket
abounding in the U.S., a “stock” shotgun
is infinitely suited to become “bespoke”
after a few additions or alterations.
Think of a shotgun as a new suit off
the rack, destined to be altered to fit
you perfectly with a coordinated shirt,
tie and shoes.
Fitting
If you approach gun ownership
from that angle with a professional
gunsmith who is well-versed in fitting
shotguns and look for a shooting
instructor who can help you determine
ideal dimensions with a try gun for
your build and shooting style, you
www.shootersshop.com.au
Australia’s
largest online
shooting
accessories shop
can own a “custom” gun. Once you
and the instructor are happy with
the point-of-impact and changes
needed to the stock dimensions, take
those instructions to a stockmaker or
well-known stock-alteration pro and
have the changes made.
Do your own research beforehand
so you are familiar with recoil pads,
adjustable combs, recoil reducers and
other possible additions. Notice who
shoots what and why. Understand the
changes to balance and weight that will
occur. Know which recoil pad is best
for you and how long it will last. Study
the hydraulic systems available and
adjustable combs. Can your gun be
“bent” to dimension? Learn everything
you can.
The most common addition is recoil
pads because they can be used to gain or
lose length-of-pull. Remember to move
your trigger to the position comfortable
for your hand (if it’s adjustable) before
altering the length! Great pads can be
installed for between $100-$150 and
are worth it. Don’t forget to have the
edges rounded and heel clipped when
it’s profiled for snag-free use. You may
find the pad is a little sticky from the
oil used to grind it down, but that will
pass with exposure to sunlight (a little
talcum powder can fix it for now).
Stock Bending
A process that used to be done with
hot oil and high heat is now done
with better and safer methods so
no damage is done to the finishes of
today’s shotguns. Briley and others use
a “bending” process that is semi-secret,
but it is very reliable and damage-free.
There are limits to how much a stock
will bend, and the really tough bend
is up or down. That’s because of the
way the grain is laid out. Cast-off for
right-handed shooters and cast-on for
lefties is an easier bend to get what
you need. The drop at the face behind
the comb nose is the position for the
rear sight – your eye. This is more
important than the drop at the heel.
Generally, cast-off and drop,
together, will either raise or lower the
point-of-impact. You will notice it either
SHORT FORCING CONE
A 2½ degree forcing cone can soften the recoil
sensation. Be sure to have the shop polish the
internal surfaces after the cone is lengthened.
CHAMBER
CHAMBER
as seeing flat down the rib for a 50/50
pattern or some elevation on the rib,
say 60/40+. Trap and skeet shooters
generally like to float the bird, so they
prefer to see some rib. In sporting
clays, a game in which half the birds
are dropping, 50/50 (flat) or just a little
float is more appropriate.
A common mistake when making
stock alterations such as an adjustable
comb is, when the comb is cut off
and hardware installed, the stock
dimensions have not actually been
changed from the original, so the
adjustments can only go up or
side-to-side. If you want an adjustable
comb installed, have at least _” material
removed under the saw cut so you will
have the ability to genuinely lower the
comb as well. There are limitations,
however, so always ask your gunsmith
first.
Mechanics
BORE
If you had the shotgun fitted and shot
it for 90 days, you will likely have
determined a bit more tweaking is in
order to perfect it. The most popular
changes in the U.S. are long forcing
cones and barrel porting. A currently
made competition-grade shotgun
will likely have longer cones as it
comes from the factory, so have your
BORE
gun-smith take a look before you make
changes. Have one of the top custom
shops do this type of work.
Industry standards are not available,
but most agree a 2_ -degree cone is
best for two reasons: It will be 3” – 4”
long, depending on bore size, and wall
thickness won’t be compromised. The
cone should always be highly polished
and, when viewed from the breech,
should not have a shadow over the
length.
Porting, which helps reduce muzzle
jump, is the second most popular
aftermarket alteration. The design
and method are the most important
factors to pay attention to here. All
porting should be done with plunge
EDM (Electro Discharge Machining) for
a burr-free bore and should have the
highest possible position on the barrel
for maximum downward thrust.
The shape of the porting holes is not
important. Just check at your gun
club to see what shape is popular.
Ask if it is clean, loud, etc. One
minor misconception about porting
is it does not actually make guns
louder. It merely allows the sound
and shock-waves to escape to the side
of the gun. Since that’s likely where
you’re standing as the shot happens, it
may sound louder. You’ll find there are
favourite shops around the country to
do this type of work. Ask at the club
for recommendations.
Backboring
Backboring is another popular method
of creating “nirvana” in the shotgun
world; however, it’s not the cure for all
things amiss. New models have larger
bores from the factory and, with Italian
proof law getting more encompassing,
thanks to Beretta, the common bore
size today is .730-.735 for 12-gauge
shotguns. Almost all formerly custom
benefits are built in now.
What does it mean to you if your bore
is smaller? While there is no proof a
backbored barrel kicks less than, say, a
shotgun with a .725 bore, the industry
graph shows the peak of recoil is
spread over a longer period of time
with a backbored barrel, thus, “felt”
recoil is reduced. My old friend, the
late, great Bob Brister, would say the
larger bore sizes allow the pellets in a
load to “find themselves.” He believed
this brief time of “self-awareness” is
perceived by the shooter as softer
recoil. Knowing that, I would always
combine long forcing cones with a
backbored barrel for maximum gain.
If you consider backboring, remember
two things. Your choke or chokes will
need to be remade to reflect the new
bore size. For example, your original
bore size of .725 with a choke of .010
(Improved Cylinder) if bored to, say,
.735, will add an additional .010 to
that choke. Now that choke is actually
a Modified in the same barrel. Also,
the seat of any screw-in choke cannot
interfere with or be smaller than
the bore or you will lose the choke
down-range, with terrible residual
damage to your barrel (trust me on this
one).
Backboring should only be performed
by supreme members of the trade who
understand how honing works. Also,
don’t forget backboring will reduce
the weight of the barrel, which can
be a good thing; however, if recoil is
your problem, you may be helping that
hard-kicking shotgun get even more
vicious.
More Changes
At this point, you should be very close
to your idea of perfection. There are
many aftermarket items that can be
installed yourself, especially if you
own a Browning, Remington or Beretta
autoloader. Take some time at the
range to look at what additional things
are done by other shooters, then ring
up the custom shops and ask. They
will help you decide what might be
most beneficial to you.
One more item to consider purchasing
for improved performance is an
aftermarket screw-in choke. The
simplest and easiest way to add weight,
lose weight, extend barrel length
or improve the performance of our
fowling piece has to be the numerous
makers of aftermarket chokes. They
offer ported models, colour-coding,
specialty materials and hunting chokes.
Who’s best is not the issue, as they all
have a niche in the market. Decide
what you want or need and then pick
a company that offers unconditional
service and satisfaction.
I personally use unported chokes
because I could never perceive the
value of unidirectional ports. A shot
column is being pushed rather slowly,
and the idea of wad retention from a
series of holes is just not plausible to
me. Besides, on my gun they were
always really dirty. I don’t know why
someone didn’t clean them!
I’ve had more than a few years of
experience performing this sort of
work on shotguns, so I hope my advice
sheds some light on what’s available
and may be useful to you. Don’t settle
for a gun that isn’t made for you. Good
luck and good shooting!
High Guns Chris Parkinson A grade, Brendon Malcolm High Gun, Huia Prince B grade, and Shane Ashworth C grade.
Skeet Chris Parkinson 1st A, Karen Hayes 1st C, Chris Cassin HOA, Dave Grant 1st B
Attendance on the Saturday was a little down on usual with
33 competitors. First event for the day was Skeet and with
only one possible to Chris Cassin who took HOA as well as the
sought after Sos Savage Memorial Trophy. Chris Parkinson,
Kriston Chadwick and Murray Cameron shot off for A Grade
with 24’s and finished in that order. That Murray would not be
a bad Skeet shot if he could hit high 1. Dave Grant took out
B grade with a 24, as did Karen Hayes in C Grade, a personal
best for her.
Next up was Triples, with Brendon Malcolm taking HOA from
Keith Livingstone with the only 2 possibles. First B Grade won
by Huia Prince with a respectable 49 and Shane Ashforth
taking C Grade with a 41.
Next was the Double Rise and, with problems in the past with
timing issues on the Laporte Twin Lap, we were wondering if
we would get through the event. In the end, the timing was
not too bad and resulted with some good scores. Chris Cassin
won HOA with the only 19, Rob Prince taking 1st A Grade with
the only 18 and five 17’s shooting off for the minor places. B
grade was taken out by Huia Prince on 16 and C grade won by
Shane Ashworth with 14.
The Minis proved to be elusive with only two possibles
recorded. John Malcolm taking out HOA, leaving Chris Cassin
with 1st A Grade. Quite fitting, as John may have had some
sort of relationship going with the minis and had a head start
on the rest of us as John kindly picked up the Minis from
Woodville on his way down. Many thanks John.
Last event for the day was the Ball Trap. Best score of 24 shot
by Club President Blue Freeman, Andrew Sanders and Rob
Prince. After the shoot off, Blue took out HOA honours from
Andrew getting 1st A Grade and Rob 2nd A Grade. Not a bad
result for a Skeet shooter eh Blue. 1st B Grade was won by Huia
Prince with 20 and C Grade won by young Jordan Rose on 19.
Sunday started with Keith Livingstone leading the High Gun
by 2 from Chris Cassin and Brendon Malcolm, so it was going
to be a tight tussle with the DTL events to shoot. Also had a
better turnout with 43 competitors on the Sunday.
First up the Single Rise and only 12 possibles shot. Brendon
Malcolm came out victorious after shooting 154 tgts in the
shoot off from local Adam Green with Karl Andrews taking the
Veterans badge with 2nd A Grade and Rob Prince 3rd A grade.
Young Gregory Bentley took out 1st B Grade and the Junior
badge after a shoot off with Kim Owen with 24’s and C Grade
was won by Shane Ashforth after a shoot off with local Gun
Shop owner Dave Gwerder
Alison Sim won the Ladies badge after a shoot off with Karen
Hayes on 22.
The Points Score event saw four possibles with Rob Prince
showing he is coming to grips with his new sponsorship deal
including a new Blaser and Hull ammunition taking out HOA.
1St A Grade won by Brendon Malcolm from Mark McGhie and
Chris Parkinson taking 2nd and 3rd respectively. Huia Prince
won the B Grade with a 72 and Jordan Rose the C Grade with
a fine 72.
Next, the testing Single Barrel. With the conditions improving
as the day went on, the event produced three possibles. The
shoot off saw Brendon Malcolm come out ahead of Chris Cassin
from Phil Bazalo and Rob Prince 3rd A Grade with 24, Brendon
also posting the only 125 of the day in the Buck Knives North
South Qualifying. B Grade was again won by Huia Prince with
a 22 and the C Grade resulted in a Rose quinella with Jordan
beating father Charlie in a shoot off also with 22’s.
Shirley Savage with Chris Cassin and the Sos Savage Memorial
Trophy for the HOA in Skeet
Points Score Jordon Rose, Brendon Malcolm, Robert Prince and Huia Prince
Last event for the weekend was the Handicap by Distance
with 8 possibles being shot. The shoot off saw Karl Andrews
prevailing from Chris Cassin and Councillor elect Michael
Holmes 3rd.
Brendon Malcolm won High Gun after his faultless day,
only eight down for the weekend, closely followed by Chris
Parkinson regaining some DTL form of late on 10 down. B
Grade was no surprise (although the Secretary had missed it
for presentations) won by Huia Prince, must be that well trained
gun of Rob’s and C Grade was won by Shane Ashworth.
A big thank you to John Malcolm for delivering the Minis and
for assisting Rob set targets in the morning, also to all that
helped keep the shoot rolling throughout the two days which
enabled the shoot to finish early both days.
Gunshot 42

If you’ve had one you’ll understand and if you haven’t,
your time is coming...
This is from newshound Dave Barry’s colonoscopy journal;
I called my friend Andy Sable, a gastroenterologist, to make
an appointment for a colonoscopy. A few days later, in his
office, Andy showed me a colour diagram of the colon, a
lengthy organ that appears to go all over the place, at one
point passing briefly through Minneapolis.
Then Andy explained the colonoscopy procedure to me
in a thorough, reassuring and patient manner. I nodded
thoughtfully, but I didn’t really hear anything he said, because
my brain was shrieking, quote, ‘HE’S GOING TO STICK A TUBE
17,000 FEET UP YOUR BEHIND!’
I left Andy’s office with some written instructions, and a
prescription for a product called ‘MoviPrep,’ which comes in
a box large enough to hold a microwave oven. I will discuss
MoviPrep in detail later; for now suffice to say that we must
never allow it to fall into the hands of America’s enemies.
I spent the next several days productively sitting around being
nervous. Then, on the day before my colonoscopy, I began my
preparation. In accordance with my instructions, I didn’t eat
any solid food that day; all I had was chicken broth, which is
basically water, only with less flavour. Then, in the evening, I
took the MoviPrep.
You mix two packets of powder together in a one-litre plastic
jug, then you fill it with lukewarm water. (For those unfamiliar
with the metric system, a litre is about 32 gallons.) Then you
have to drink the whole jug. This takes about an hour, because
MoviPrep tastes - and here I am being kind - like a mixture of
goat spit and urinal cleanser, with just a hint of lemon.
The instructions for MoviPrep, clearly written by somebody
with a great sense of humour, state that after you drink it, ‘a
loose, watery bowel movement may result.’ This is kind of like
saying that after you jump off your roof, you may experience
contact with the ground.
MoviPrep is a nuclear laxative. I don’t want to be too graphic,
here, but: Have you ever seen a space-shuttle launch? This is
pretty much the MoviPrep experience, with you as the shuttle.
There are times when you wish the commode had a seat
belt. You spend several hours pretty much confined to the
bathroom, spurting violently. You eliminate everything. And
then, when you figure you must be totally empty, you have to
drink another litre of MoviPrep, at which point, as far as I can
tell, your bowels travel into the future and start eliminating
food that you have not even eaten yet.
After an action-packed evening, I finally got to sleep. The next
morning my wife drove me to the clinic. I was very nervous.
Not only was I worried about the procedure, but I had been
experiencing occasional return bouts of MoviPrep spurtage. I
was thinking, ‘What if I spurt on Andy?’ How do you apologize
to a friend for something like that? Flowers would not be
enough.
At the clinic I had to sign many forms acknowledging that
I understood and totally agreed with whatever the heck
the forms said. Then they led me to a room full of other
colonoscopy people, where I went inside a little curtained
space and took off my clothes and put on one of those hospital
garments designed by sadist perverts, the kind that, when
you put it on, makes you feel even more naked than when you
are actually naked.
Then a nurse named Eddie put a little needle in a vein in my
left hand. Ordinarily I would have fainted, but Eddie was very
good, and I was already lying down. Eddie also told me that
some people put vodka in their MoviPrep. At first I was ticked
off that I hadn’t thought of this, but then I pondered what
would happen if you got yourself too tipsy to make it to the
bathroom, so you were staggering around in full Fire Hose
Mode. You would have no choice but to burn your house.
When everything was ready, Eddie wheeled me into the
procedure room, where Andy was waiting with a nurse and
an anaesthesiologist. I did not see the 17,000-foot tube, but
I knew Andy had it hidden around there some where. I was
seriously nervous at this point. Andy had me roll over on my
left side, and the anaesthesiologist began hooking something
up to the needle in my hand. There was music playing in the
room, and I realized that the song was ‘Dancing Queen’ by
ABBA. I remarked to Andy that, of all the songs that could be
playing during this particular procedure, ‘Dancing Queen’ had
to be the least appropriate.
‘You want me to turn it up?’ said Andy, from somewhere behind
me. ‘Ha ha,’ I said. And then it was time, the moment I had
been dreading for more than a decade. If you are squeamish,
prepare yourself, because I am going to tell you, in explicit
detail, exactly what it was like.
I have no idea. Really. I slept through it. One moment, ABBA
was yelling ‘Dancing Queen, feel the beat of the tambourine,’
and the next moment, I was back in the other room, waking
up in a very mellow mood. Andy was looking down at me and
asking me how I felt. I felt excellent. I felt even more excellent
when Andy told me that It was all over, and that my colon had
passed with flying colours. I have never been prouder of an
internal organ.
‘Can you hear me NOW?’
‘Are we there yet? Are we there yet? Are we there yet?’
‘You know, in Arkansas, we’re now legally married.’
‘Any sign of the trapped miners, Chief?’
‘You put your left hand in; you take your left hand out....’
‘Hey! Now I know how a Muppet feels!’
‘If your hand doesn’t fit, you must quit!
‘Hey Doc, let me know if you find my dignity.’
MENTAL TRAINING
PractiSe
by Michael J. Keyes, M.D.
I was listening to a musician talk about practise on the radio
the other day and he brought up a good point: “When you
practise, you have to face yourself and deal with the pain.”
What he meant, of course, is if you want your practise to mean
anything, you have to be honest and realistic. Practise is not
meant to be fun.
There are plenty of reasons to practise. Most shooters have a
natural ability to hit targets. We call this the “talent level,” but
shooting in competition is not a natural endeavour. Shotgun
shooting is a distillation of the normal ability to hit a moving
target that places demands on the shooter hunting or plinking
do not. One of these is the need to be perfect.
On the hunting field, we don’t usually count the number of
shots we take to down birds (unless there is money involved,
of course, and then it becomes a competition). We are there
to have a good time, be outdoors and commune with nature,
which is the essence of hunting. It is different when we pay
money to shoot clay targets in order to win a prize.
We practise so we can win, and to win we have to have a plan
and a direction to travel. Practise is serious business.
To practise well, you have to determine what is the most efficient
way to go about the task and then have to do the practise.
Every elite-level shooter practises that way, while the rest of us
tend to not really practise. Instead, we want to have fun.
There is nothing wrong with having fun. If you ask those elite
shooters if they are enjoying their practise rounds, they will
tell you they are having fun. The reason they are having fun
is they are convinced they are going to win, and one of the
reasons they think that is they practise harder and better than
99% of all the other shooters.
“Easy” Ed Macauley used to say, “When you are not practising,
remember, someone somewhere is practising and, when you
meet him, he will win.” Elite-level shooters know talent is
trumped by hard work. And that hard work involves a large
dose of reality.
The problem with having fun at practise is, while you are
having fun, you are not looking at your weak spots. Instead,
you are ignoring anything that might cause you to feel bad
about yourself or your game. In this case, having fun is a
recipe for disaster if you intend to improve. You don’t really
want to look at what your problems are and then fix them. You
would rather shoot a round of (insert shotgun game) with your
friends and enjoy the day.
If you have been reading this column on a regular basis, you
will know I advocate an organised approach to shooting, and
especially to practise. Each practise session should have an
immediate goal based on a recent analysis of your game and
should fit in with your overall goals, resulting in improvement.
Every time you shoot in practise, you should attempt to solve a
problem in your game. You have to have a ruthlessly accurate
idea of where you stand and where you are going to do this.
That means looking at your failures and admitting to yourself
you are not perfect. A lot of us have a very hard time with
this.
Elite-level shooters analyze their faults on a regular basis.
They are aware perfection is a moving target, and they have
to keep at a peak when they shoot in important matches if
they want to win. Part of this focus is to acknowledge there
are weak areas in their game that have to be improved and
strong areas that can be exploited. Any problems have to be
solved by eliminating them. At this level, it usually only takes
a short time to resolve the issue because they have done it so
many times in the past.
Beginning and intermediate shooters have a different set of
problems. They are not perfect, not even close, and have
multiple technical, physical and mental issues, most they are
not even aware of. Technical skills are usually the focus of
their practise.
One advantage a beginning or intermediate shooter has is
they know they need improvement and can follow standard
and obvious practise patterns, such as shooting so many
shots at each station of a ‘skeet field’ while learning the proper
setup, lead and follow-through. Coaches, books and friends
can guide them (meaning, they can point out the mistakes
and prescribe cures) and usually put the shooter on the right
path. All the shooter has to do is accept they need this kind of
help and practise to minimize the bad stuff while enhancing
the good stuff.
Of course, that is a lot harder than it sounds. It is hard to
accept you are not perfect. It hurts to realise you are a failure
in any respect if you are the typical perfectionist workaholic
that tends to become a competitor. But it is necessary if you
want to advance to the top. Accepting this is Step One in
practising.
Step Two is to practise well. Learning to practise is an art in
itself. You would think just going out and shooting 200 rounds
focusing on some aspect of your shooting would be enough.
But practise is about information processing. You have to take
a number of related concepts and form them into a functioning
whole that will prove itself in a match.
There are some things about a match you cannot duplicate in
practise (match stress, for one), yet you have to devise a way
to overcome the obstacles anyway. Fortunately, your brain
is capable of making the connections in a way that allows
you to improve even with incomplete information. Ideally,
you should be able to go to a tournament, deal with match
pressure and automatically shoot your shots to the best of
your current ability. You should shoot with confidence and
not be surprised by anything that occurs at the match. Your
performance should be a reflection of your performance in
practise. If it isn’t, you are not practising as well as you can.
We all know shooters who shoot much better in practise than
matches. Something is clearly wrong with this picture, but the
shooter usually can’t tell you what is wrong. I will venture to
say anyone who is finding himself with this problem is not
practising to overcome it. Instead, they are expecting to do
well because they have the technical skill or talent and believe
they will succeed without having to put in the work required
to perform well in a match. They refuse to look at their
deficiencies, especially those aspects of mental toughness
lacking in their game. It is not that they cannot develop
these qualities, they are just not willing to do the mental and
emotional work needed to make sure they have the confidence
to succeed under match pressure.
The brain is capable of overcoming any of these obstacles. All
it takes is making the right choices and hard work. The work
part is essential because you have to push yourself in order to
change. Most of us can’t do something once and be an expert
at it forever after; we have to dissect it mentally, put in the
time doing the physical part and then sleep on it.
Practise demands hard work, but it also requires rest time for
the brain to process and integrate the information to make it
a complete concept that can be brought into use in a match.
Gunshot 44

Otherwise, you have to think about too many things in the
match and will not be able to perform well.
I just read a paper addressing this subject that came to the
conclusion “relational memory” requires time and sleep
to organise. This means people are able to take seemingly
unrelated concepts and put them together. The subjects were
given the task of memorizing what appeared to be random
relationships (but they did have a subtle set of rules of
relationship) and then were asked to do a similar task later.
They did much better when they waited 12 hours (including
8 hours of sleep) than if they did it right after the first set of
tasks. It appears sleep is major component of the process.
Hence, the folk wisdom to “sleep on it” has scientific validity.
Practise is a matter of thinking, doing and integrating, and it
has to have a period of time with sleep in order to achieve the
desired results. It is an accumulative process that pays off in
the long run.
Good practise skills require the ability to bring in all aspects
of the game and integrate them over a period of time. If you
are lacking some parts, once you realise what is missing, you
can develop it. Don’t let a sense of false pride get in your
way. I can guarantee that guy breathing down your neck is
not concerned. Denying problems exist only hurts you in the
end; we all have problems that need to be fixed. Practise can
be fun, but it should be serious about addressing problems
and developing solutions.
Dr Keyes has written over 200 articles on mental training for
Hall of Fame
New Zealand
Hi all,
As promised in the last Gunshot here is an update on progress
of “NZ Hall of Fame”.
By the time you read this our DTL Nationals will probably be
underway in Hamilton along with our first induction dinner
and presentation evening programmed for March 5th at The
Station Restaurant, Waikato University. We hope this will be
the success envisaged and suitably recognise the tremendous
achievements of our three inductees.
Since the last issue I can tell you we have managed to locate
the relatives of Duncan Fraser, the very first winner of the NZ
Single Rise 1908.
I know a number of them are going to be in attendance at the
presentation to receive the award on behalf of the family.
The information from family contacts came about by chance
through Neil Pratt who came into contact with someone who
knew the family connections. As I stated last time so much of
this information will have to come from you the shooters and
the people you run into. This contact certainly proved that
point, thanks Neil we had nearly given up hope of finding the
information we needed.
Details of our three inductees’ achievements which have earned
them the recognition and place in “The NZ Hall of Fame” are as
follows;
Mr Duncan Fraser. (14 May 1864 – 1939)
1975 NZ Double Rise Champion
Plus NZ Mackintosh Team High Gun 1955, 1956, 1957 and 1962.
1966 Australian High Gun Champion
Also 1958 and 1963 North Island Double rise winner.
As you can see from this list of achievements all three richly
deserve to be recognised and rightly have their achievements
preserved in our Trapshooting history.
Thanks to both John and Charlie and their families for supplying
huge amounts of information and photos for us to copy and
preserve, it was much appreciated.
Also to the relatives of Duncan Fraser who have been extremely
helpful supplying history and photos which we would have had
no record of until now.
I am looking forward to listing more successes and the collection
of more of our shooting history over the coming months and
years.
