Alumnae Class Updates compiled by Jackie Bloyd 2010 Class Ambassador: Maggie Ising A message from Maggie Ising - Something I want to be known is how strong the power of the Assumption community is. Last year, the week of my graduation, my dad passed away. Although already finished with school, my classmates and teachers came together and supported me in many ways. At that time, when I needed the most support, I got it. But I didn’t think it could get much more powerful than that. Maggie Ising A week after my dad’s passing, my mom discovered cancer of her own. Not many people knew about this, considering we had already graduated and we were no longer around each other as much. In early February, my mom started to get pretty sick. Word apparently traveled fast and girls from my class immediately started texting me from colleges all over telling me that they were there for me if I needed anything. My mom ended up passing on February 15, 2011, and the news spread like wildfire. One word to describe the support this time around: Facebook. With everyone spread out at different colleges, it’s not as easy to get information as it was at Assumption, which is when Facebook comes into play. I had gotten SO many wall posts within hours of my mom’s passing of people telling me that they were there for me and I had their support. People tagged me in their statuses saying they were praying for me. I’m almost positive that 75% of my graduating class found out about my mom’s passing within five hours of it happening. With Sympathy Deepest sympathy is extended to the following alumnae and their families in their time of sorrow: LaVerne Haunz Gnadinger `64 on the death of her sister-in-law and to the Class of 1959 on the death of their classmate, Rose Marie Gnadinger Hillis `59, on March 17, 2011. Peggy Bahr Foley `70 on the death of her husband, Dan, on February 21, 2011. Patricia Ann Murphy `71 and Mary Brigid Murphy Amshoff `78 on the death of their father, Edward D. “Murph” Murphy, Jr., on November 22, 2010. Nancy Hauber Klapheke `74 on the death of her father, Walter Francis Hauber Sr., on January 17, 2011. Shaun O`Connor McCrea `74, Donna O`Connor Ford `75, and Caryn O`Connor Mucci `79 on the death of their father; Shannon Ford `00, Kelly Ford `02, and Erin O`Connor `06 on the death of their grandfather; and Laurie Storch O`Connor `79 on the death of her father-in-law, Dr. Robert “Bob” Renshaw O`Connor, on January 29, 2011. Annette Ford `75 on the death of her father, Lawrence Ford, on January 6, 2011. My classmates sent flowers, cards, etc., and I’ve never felt so much love and support as I did then. This time around, the support and care were different. We were not classmates anymore, so for some people, it may have been weird to go several months without exchanging words, but once something like this happens, they were still there. That’s what I love about my class. We’ve endured so much trauma together and it breaks my heart. Although there was so much pain from our traumatic experiences, it brought us so much closer. I can honestly say that there is no better love than the love from the Assumption community. Not only was I reminded of my class being at my side, but I got one of the best wall posts from a current senior, Rachel Mills. Part of what she said was, “Everyone’s mentioned that the class of 2010 is here for you, but they left some people out. I think it’s safe to say the entire community of Assumption is here for you. You were a well known face around school and left a long-lasting impact that none of your underclasswomen will soon forget.” This post brought a smile to my face and tears to my eyes. You never know how powerful a community can be until you need those people to show their love. Although the circumstances have been bad, I’ve been able to experience this amazing community’s strength and desire to be there for one another. Assumption is truly a great place, and I don’t know where I’d be right now without the lessons learned here and the people I shared the best memories with.
