The Swedish Way
Four reasons to choose LFV as your ATM
business partner that delivers returns on
the environment, economy and safety.
Green Flights
LFV at the forefront in Europe
During the first decade of
the millennium LFV has
created a more effective
airspace with shorter, more
effective flight routes and
exact timings. The result
has constituted a lower impact
on the environment.
Green Flight is a concept comprising
three dimensions: green
departures, direct routes and
green approaches. Independently
and together, these initiatives
contribute to greener flights,
the result of which is positive for
the airlines, passengers and the
climate.
A green approach is achieved by
the aircraft using an even descent
(a so-called Continuous Descent
Approach CDA) with minimum
thrust. This is comparable to ecodriving
when driving a car.
In Sweden, LFV offers green
approaches to all airlines arriving
at Swedish airports.
Using the latest in navigation
technology, LFV has created the
conditions that allow airlines to
fly the shortest route possible
through Swedish airspace when
flying at cruising altitude. This
initiative is called Free Route
Airspace Sweden (FRAS).
During 2011 the FRAS concept
resulted in a saving of 15 tons of
fuel, a 45 tons reduction in carbon
dioxide emissions and a cut of 7.5
hours in travel time in Swedish
airspace, per day.
LFV is at the forefront in terms
of delivering concrete solutions
within the area of Green Flights.
The environmental project VINGA
located at Gothenburg Landvetter
Airport, which was carried out
in 2011, resulted in a reduction
of carbon dioxide emissions by
almost 300 kilos in the approach
phase. This was achieved through
the use of various other flight
paths.
VINGA continued in 2012 with
the project Green Connection
in which all flight phases were
included. These positive experiences
form LFV’s backbone in its
continued work to minimise the
impact of aviation on the environment.
LFV was recently appointed to
introduce green aviation technology
in Indonesia.
LFV has cutting-edge knowledge
within Green Flights validation and
extensive experience of implementation
in real environments.
Optimal Use of Airspace
Through civil and military co-operation
Optimal use of airspace
means that LFV and Sweden
are front runners in terms
of the Single European Sky
initiative. This delivers returns
on the environment,
economy and safety.
In Europe, large blocks of airspace
comprise military exercise
areas which are not accessible
to civilian air traffic thus leading
to long diversions. LFV’s unique
concept builds on a close
collaboration between civil air
traffic control and military stakeholders,
whereby military ”fighter
control” is allowed to “separate”
their traffic in relation to commercial
traffic. This is coordinated
through an active military exercise
area which allows commercial air
traffic to pass through in a safe
and effective manner.
As a result of this collaboration
LFV has, since 2010, facilitated
the use of Free Route Airspace
Sweden (FRAS) which means that
the any airline can choose the
shortest flight path to a destination
at cruising altitude.
This tradition of cooperation
has given LFV a unique position
from which we have been able
to increase our effectiveness and
capacity. This can be demonstrated
through the mutual use of
airports, air traffic controllers and
airspace.
Our concept contributes to
maximum flexibility and clearer
benefits for all stakeholders using
the airspace.
We have improved airspace
access and responded to many
different customer needs in a
variety of ways. Flexible use of
airspace, green flights and
collaborative decision making are
the keys to building an optimally
structured and environmentally
effective airspace for all users.
LFV was the first organisation in the
world, and still have a unique position,
to integrate civil and military
aviation in full operational mode.
We foresaw a single solution that
would handle the anticipated growth
in both civil and military air traffic
movements.
The solution was to have a sole
organisation responsible for all air
traffic management through one
single technical system.

Eco-Airport
Airports for tomorrow’s needs
In order to minimise the
total environmental impact
of aviation it is crucial to
work with the entire chain
including aircraft and airport
operations. On the ground
the challenge is to optimise
the airports including all the
operations and processes
that are carried out there
such as passenger shuttles
to and from the airport to
how aircraft movements
from the gate until take-off
can be enhanced.
With our Eco-Airport product, we
help airports, airlines and air traffic
control providers with solutions
and processes which contribute to
the reduction of aviation’s impact
on the environment. We offer
a total overview of the airport’s
operations with the aim of optimising
operative and technical
functions, logistics and decisionmaking
processes thereby minimising
the use of energy with
a subsequent reduction in the
impact on the environment and
climate.
The interventions are customised
according to the airport’s
requirements and can include:
the development of regulation,
policies and strategies; an investigation
of prerequisites for inter
modal traffic clusters between
different modes of transport; the
heating/air conditioning of buildings;
an increase in municipal and
regional planning cooperation;
optimisation of the turn-around
process and field service processes;
and the implementation
of green flights, etc. Strategical
Environmental Assessments and
Environmental Impact Assessments
can be implemented as
tools to facilitate the decisionmaking
process.
LFV has a unique insight into
designing and building airports for
tomorrow’s needs; it’s our business.
We fully support the Eco-
Airport concept including the
energy component when it
comes to, for example, efficiency
and rational use of resources.
LFV has participated in various
Eco-Airport projects around the
world which has led to a range
of concrete measures. LFV was
recently appointed to introduce
green aviation technology in
Indonesia, an assignment which
comprises the entire chain from
Eco-Airport to Green Flights.
LFV is at the forefront regarding
research and validation of
Eco-Airports and provides cutting
edge knowledge in the area of
implementation. We believe it is
a given that we share our competence
to create the conditions
for long-term and sustainable air
travel.
Remote Tower Services
The next generation of Air Traffic Services
LFV’s prize-winning concept
for remote tower services
means that airports can
significantly decrease their
costs for Air Traffic Services.
LFV can support your organisation
in the transition from today’s
Air Traffic Services to a modern,
cost efficient and flexible provision
of Air Traffic Services, using new
technology and methodology. We
can provide high level strategic
support through implementation
planning and project management.
LFV can also provide
operational support, human
factors considerations and safety/
regulatory activities and actual
service provision based on
Remote Tower Services.
Thanks to the Remote Tower
Services concept, one or numerous
local towers can be operated
from another location irrespective
of distance. The result is an airport
which can offer more flexible
air traffic control services ”on
demand” and versatile opening
hours to meet customer requirements.
The developmental work for
Remote Towers is underway at
two locations in Sweden. At the
Control Centre in Malmö the
concept is finalised and tested,
whilst in Sundsvall premises and
equipment are being prepared
to commence implementing the
Remote Towers operations at
both Örnsköldsvik and Sundsvall
Airports.
Parallelly, further development
of Remote Tower Services is run
within the framework of the EU
programme Sesar with the goal
of streamlining air traffic control
services in the whole of Europe.
LFV can support your organization
in bringing ATC Tower operations
to a new level of efficiency.
