Nowadays, the desalination system only is partially implemented in the
treatment plant of Benidorm.
b. Wastewater supply must be adjusted to the irrigation demand. The proposed
solution addresses the issue by designing new storage reservoirs. Water is
stored in winter and autumn and complements the dairy treated volumes
during high peak consumption periods. Nowadays, there is little reservoir
volume.
c. Full implementation of the water transportation pipelines diverting water from
the treatment plants to the irrigation areas.
2. The introduction and use of surface runoff volumes for irrigation purposes needs the
implementation of additional hydraulic infrastructures; water conduits, pumping
stations and water regulating tanks. The construction of the previous facilities will able
to incorporate into the drip irrigation network water of high quality.
3. As far as possible, urban and irrigation water volumes must share the hydraulic
infrastructure (reservoirs and main conduits) in order to reduce water costs achieving
an integrated water management.
4. The incorporation of wastewater for irrigation represents a significant investment, not
only due to the required water quality improvement but, the high costs derived from
the storage and distribution.
