Building futures
...shaping lives!
The points were very close wi th only one point separating 2nd and 3rd place!
Daniel House found tha t little bit extra and won the Swi mming Ca rni val for the
fi rs t time . For the past 3 yea rs Joshua House has held the ti tle , but the y were
pleased to see the trophy go to such worthy opponents. Gideon House was
placed 2nd and 3rd place went to Joshua House.
Congratulations to GIDEON HOUSE for achieving the Team Spirit Trophy during the
Swimming Carnival. Great job ... with your war cries and marching!!!
As the year has started, it’s good to be reminded that
education is not just about filling the “bucket” with
knowledge; here it is, learn it and remember it – it is
about developing the skills with which to thrive in an
ever changing world. The education we provide aims
to ensure that our students are prepared fo r the
changing landscape of Australian society and
equipping them to make a difference. As a school,
we look forward to working with you in seeking to
fulfil the expectations and aspirations that you and
your children have. We look forward to pushing
them academically, and we look forward to the
opportunities to challenge them to become the man
and woman that God desired for them to become.
We hope that you will share with us in the
excitement of the opportunities that lie ahead.
In the midst of the media’s attention to ranking
schools it must be said that Riverside is a great
school - we do a great job preparing our students for
their exams and other external assessments, whilst
remaining aware that education is much more than
the grades that students receive in their QCE (Yr 12)
and NAPLAN (Yrs 3, 5, 7 & 9). Last year we were
recognised as a candidate college for our literacy
intervention, all of our Yr 12’s successfully completed
their QCE and our day school NAPLAN results placed
us in the top 50 Queensland schools.
Coming to Riverside is more than an education, it is a
life experience. All education is done within a value
framework and I am proud of the values that we instil,
through our daily activities and interactions. I am also
excited by our facilities. The first of three new
buildings for this year has been completed and we
are well on the way to spending $6.1 million.
The plans to be on the forefront of education make
this a dynamic place to work, to partner with and to
learn at.
JUNIOR COLLEGE News
Junior School Picnic and Information Sessions.....
Endeavour
The Year 3/4 room has turned into the Endeavour, complete
with sails, rigging, lamps, hammocks and sea chests. As a
class we are immersing ourselves in life on the Endeavour.
Students each day choose a crew member from the
Endeavour and wear an I.D card that gives some background
information on that person. We will continue this study by
looking at the arrival of the first fleet and the impact that
this had on the Aboriginal community.
On February 5 the Junior School community came together
to gain a better understanding into life at Riverside. After a
time of eating, parents spent time in their child’s classroom
to acquaint themselves with procedures, meet teachers and
other parents. Thank you for partnering with us as we work
together to achieve the best outcomes for your child. We
value your support. We look forward to a positive year
ahead!
All About Being Passionate
This week in Middle College we’ve been looking at being
passionate. At Middle College cha pel we had two ‘guest
speaker’ – Mrs White and Mr Katterns. Both of these
wonderful teachers came and shared some of the things
they’re passionate about and how they see that being part
of what they do at Riverside. Mrs White shared about her
passion for Science and talked about how she had worked to
build up the resources in the Science lab and make it
possible for Riverside students to do lots of practical Science.
Mr Katterns, new to Riverside this year, talked about his love
of surfing and kite surfing, how he came to be a teacher and
how he hopes he might be able to do both things at
Riverside in the future.
Mr Deans – our fearless leader, wrapped up our session
sharing the story of the passion one of our students had for
horse riding and how that passion became the equine
program we have today.
Thanks to our passionate teachers for sharing this week.
Mr Katterns Hitting The Waves
Mr Katterns is going this weekend to compete at a national
kite boarding competition in Western Australia. We wish him
all the best and look forward to hea ring about it when he
gets back.
Visit From The Gideons
MIDDLE COLLEGE News
Once again this year the
Year 8 students ha d the
privilege of being visited
by representatives from
Gideons Interna tional.
Mr Bucha nan and Mr
Waldock talked to the
students about the job
they do in distributing
Bibles in the local area and
supporting distribution
around the world. The
students then were each
given their own copy of a
small New Testament
as a gift. A big thanks to the Gideons and the work they
do, and for taking time to come and visit us.
Every year we have the opportunity to send students to
spend the year being part of the local Junior Council.
Amongst other things they
participate in running community
events and making recommendations
to the Fraser Coast Regional Council on
issues. We’re pleased tha t
Lucy Kinbacher and Emily Rockemer
have put their hands up to be involved
this year as our Year 9 representatives
SENIOR COLLEGE News
New leadership is at the helm in 2010 and wha t an exciting year we have ahead of us.
To help everyone know a little bit more about our College Capta ins we have supplied a
brief profile.
COLLEGE CAPTAIN—Taylor Hughes
I began at Riverside Christian College in 2007 and I have enjoyed my time here. My favourite subject
is Biology. The best part about being here at Riverside is watching the progress of the facilities and
seeing students benefit from using them. I am easy to ta lk to, so if any students have any concerns
they can always come and cha t with me. This year my major focus is to graduate from Year 12 with
the best possible results. In the future I hope to be working with the RAAF.
COLLEGE CAPTAIN—Nicole Rach
I have been attending Riverside since: 2007. My favourite subject at school is: OP Art The best thing
about the College is: The teachers not only sacrifice their time to teach us, but they are also really
supportive, inspirational and encouraging. One of my favourite Bible verses is: Psalm 40:11‐12. One
thing I’d like to achieve is: To always live a spontaneous, outrageous and fun life and to never lose
sight of The Creator, who made it all possible for me. Ten years from now: I hope to understand my
purpose for this life a lot more, so tha t I would be following the specific ministry that suits me.
Quote: “In order to find yourself, you must go to the one who knows you best.”‐Naomi Van den Berg.
COLLEGE VICE CAPTAIN—Tamara Newbery
I have been at Rivers ide Christian College since 2006. My favourite subject is Dance.
The best thing about Riverside Christian College is the people and the friendships that form.
The one thing I'd like to achieve in 2010 is a class of Year 12’s that have a friendship with each other
that will last beyond school years. Ten years from now I would like to have a reunion so we ca n all
catch up and have a good time.
children on their runs. Most buses are already full, so please
consider carefully whether you will be requiring bus services.
Students who use the bus every morning and afternoon will
be given priority. If there are any changes to your routine
message your driver directly on their mobile phone. Bus
applaud the other Houses as
the announcements were
Chinese New Year
Year 4707
Year 6/7 are looking at Chinese music this term and have
already started composing and are coming up with some
great ideas, I will be looking to see how you can see and hear
your child’s work.
If your child has an interest in any of the lunch break
activities please encourage them to come along – don’t let
them think “If only....”. If there is nothing here that takes
their fancy ask them to see me with ideas of what they
would like to see happen and I still have a few spots left for
ensembles.
I have been trying, without much success, to organise
instrumental tutors to come in, but there has either been a
lack of response or the quality hasn’t been there – rest
assured I will keep trying.
And finally,
Q. What do you call someone who hangs out with
musicians?
A. A drummer.
It was great to meet some of the pa rents a couple of weeks
ago at the Middle and Junior College evenings and I look
forward to meeting with more of you over the coming
months. I had the
opportunity to talk,
and demonstrate,
some of my ideas
with you.
The
extra‐curricular
program is now up
and running,
and as I don’t see
all of the College –
especially Senior –
I am relying on
assemblies and
such as this to
spread the word
and get your
children
involved.
My introduction to Distance Education has been a very
I am passionate about exploring the use of ICT throughout
The College has a very positive impact on my own desire to
learn and grow, leading me to be confident that the work
Paralympian Inspires Students To Compete
Mr Greg Sobczak visited the College on Thursday to share
some of his experiences as an athlete and competitor in the
2000 Paralympics. Greg shared his story with the students
and inspired them to go after things that they want to
achieve in life. Greg also brought along with him a handpowered
cycle to demonstrate. The Yr 9 Duke of Edinburgh
students are hoping to compete in the Technology
Challenge la ter in the year. Students were very interested in
what Mr Sobczak had to say and asked lots of questions.
Channel 7 Loca l News were invited to capture some footage
and this will be screened on Friday (19th Feb.) evening news.
Homework and
Assignment
assistance after
school
Homework and
assignment
assistance will be
offered again this
year. It will be supervised by Mrs Adame and Mrs Slater
on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons from 3 to 4 pm.
The venue is the Computer Lab as students may need
computers for assignment research. It is open to
students from Years 6 to 12 who want to use the time
to work independently on homework or assignments,
and students who would lik e some teacher assistance
with their work. There will be only one teacher for the
group so it is not one on one tutoring and it is not a
time where students can play games on the computers
or come to socialise.
Please support us by checking with your child/children
whether they have work to do and if they don't, make
the usual arrangements for them to go home at 3 pm.
