But as has been said elsewhere in this volume, Bangladesh shows
the way. Much will depend on the activity of the women themselves
and their organizations.
This volume may help conscious women and their partisans to arm
themselves for this struggle — which will be protracted and fierce. It is
a worthy cause.
We should be grateful to those responsible for producing this
volume for their excellent selection. The scholarly articles by Dr. Lucy
Carroll in this book deserve special commendation. The contribution
of Harsh Kapoor in the compilation of this volume also merits praise.
The WLUML has performed a signal public service by producing
and publishing this book on Shah Bano and the Muslim Women Act.
This book will be valuable not only to activists in the Women’s
movement but also, on account of its juristic accuracy, to lawyers and
judges who have to deal with these matters. As one who had some
association with this case in 1985-86 I feel proud and privileged that
the publishers have asked me to write this foreword.
