When we talk about a
building, we’re really talking
about people
At Willmott Dixon, we believe a
The Construction Division of our
local authorities across the UK.
building should enhance the lives of
all those who use it. A building must
improve our ability to live, to learn,
to work or to relax, according to its
purpose. It must serve and anticipate
our various needs. And it should
provide maximum value for all
stakeholders. How well it succeeds
depends greatly on the quality of its
design and construction.
The Willmott Dixon Group is one of
the UK’s largest private construction
and property development
companies. We are a family-owned
organisation with more than 500
people, and over 150 years of
industry experience.
business is responsible for a diverse
range of projects in both the public
and private sectors, and enjoys an
annual turnover in excess of
£300 million.
People are at the heart of everything
we do. We place great emphasis
on developing our teams of highlytrained
professionals, which is
why Contract Journal declared
us “the best company to work
for in construction” for the last
two years. We pride ourselves
on our reputation as a dynamic,
advantageous and sought-after
partner. Utilising new forms of
procurement and contracts,
we have created long-term
framework agreements with many
These mutually beneficial alliances
are built on a shared desire to
promote improved value, quality and
sustainability in the built environment.
Of course, some of the most
important people of all are those
who care for others, and dedicate
their lives to making the rest of us
well. Willmott Dixon has a thorough
appreciation of the Healthcare
sector and the demands it presents.
Through our outstanding experience
and knowledge, we have won
many successes and helped pioneer
new thinking in this specialised field
of design and construction.
Higher expectations, new
approaches to working and
continuous advances in medical
technology put extraordinary
demands on the modern Health
Service in every sector from
Walk-In Centres and Doctors’
Surgeries to Mental Health and
Acute Care Facilities
Education
Construction that takes place within
those environments requires the input
of dedicated professionals who can
Commercial
co-operate with health providers to
reduce the effects on staff, patients
and visitors.
Willmott Dixon has a dedicated
team which analyse best practice in
modern procurement and creates a
foundation where both public and
independent operators can offer
innovative facilities whilst delivering
value for money solutions.
With a fully integrated team of
designers, healthcare planners
Health
and clinicians, we are dedicated
to working in partnership with all
providers in the healthcare market to
develop truly innovative and flexible
Retail
solutions. Our team work hard to
resolve the problems of today whilst
ever mindful of the changes that
evolving strategies and technological
advancements will bring in the future.
The Willmott Dixon Team both
guides and assists our healthcare
clients through all stages of the
process providing continuing input
into all aspects of the planning
process including care models,
service delivery, design performance
in use, building and essential
Description:
Primary Care in the UK is
concerned with the provision of
care at the first point of contact
whilst the patient remains within
the home environment
The building provides a new primary care centre, one of the biggest in the country,
which is six storeys high. There is to be a single level basement under the South
end of the Eastern half of the building. The main frame is reinforced concrete on
piled foundations with rain screen cladding fixed back to the frame. There is to
be a central atrium that runs North-South and divides the building into two equal
width wings, which will have a lighter weight steel framed roof. Internally the
building is fully air conditioned using chilled beams. Fit out of fixtures and fittings
to a high standard is also included.
UK covers a wide range of
services which are provided by
independent sector
It is delivered in many ways such as: care at home,
day centres, residential or nursing homes.
Willmott Dixon has for some time been active
constructors of care facilities in the UK, many of them
delivered through partnerships and other forms of
collaborative approach which in turn allows us to work
innovatively within the social and legislative changes
that drive this important market.
Design and build project to provide accommodation for frail and elderly
This project involved the demolition of an existing and
the provision of a new care home comprising 109 bedsits plus a day centre
utilising timber frame construction. The project sat alongside an existing care
home and was built in two phases. Following Phase 1 the existing residents were
decanted and then the old home demolished for Phase 2 to commence. The site
required a high level of resident consultation as the construction works in some
areas were only 2 metres from the existing home.
Research Facilities
Research Facilities
Client:
University of East Anglia
Project:
The Zuckerman Institute for Connective Environmental Research
Description:
The UK is second only to the United
States in terms of the volume and
influence of scientific publications
and the number of major
international science prizes won
This building is occupied by the School of Environmental Sciences and used for
desktop research projects and co-ordination of field investigations. The size of the
building significantly increased following award of the contract, doubling the size
of the basement at the commencement of the project and then during the course of
construction, the introduction of a third floor. These variations were negotiated and
resulted in an increased project value from £4.5m to £5.9m.
The building has been designed for minimal environmental impact both in terms
of construction materials and energy useage; for example recycled aggregates
have been used in the piles and drainage. The building also features extensive
photovoltaic glazing panels at third floor level that will produce 33kw of energy,
which will be bought from the UEA by the local electricity supplier.
The UK has long been recognised as a world leader in
the provision of research facilities with interests ranging
from bio-medicine and particle physics to environmental
engineering and economic research.
Willmott Dixon’s experience in this sector, particularly
in the areas of specialised mechanical and electrical
services, clean room technology and isolation are
particularly relevant in the construction of modern
health facilities.
Client:
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine
Project:
North Courtyard Extension
Description:
The North Courtyard Development provides research and office space
including a new top-lit atria over five upper storeys, a lower ground floor and
basement within the courtyard of an existing building. Renovation work to the
existing facade was carried out as part of the works which were undertaken
whilst the school remained fully operational. A significant feature of this project
was the extremely limited access into the courtyard, which required many
innovative solutions to ensure materials could be brought into the working area,
and the construction could be carried out safely with the school in operation.
Client:
University College London
Project:
Auditory Research Building
Description:
This project was to demolish an existing building on the site and then construct
a new 4 storey concrete framed building adjacent to the existing Ear, Nose and
Throat Hospital, which remained fully occupied throughout the works, creating
new research laboratories and the refurbishment of existing facilities. A new
atrium and a feature facade entrance have a considerable impact on the Grays
Inn Road elevation. This facility was part funded by the Wellcome Trust to provide
a much needed resource for the development of auditory research and features
specialist BSU, category 3 laboratories, experimental audio sound booths and
highly serviced office areas to achieve Home Office certification to undertake
research. The construction was undertaken in a very confined position with
adjacent buildings of up to five storeys high which also required underpinning.
There was no provision for temporary accommodation on site and materials
access was via the existing paving level.
