Natural Habitat and Special Adaptations
* Usually grows near drainage areas (streambeds
or canyons) where there is more moisture.
* Flaky bark and stems may deter ants from climbing
up plant to obtain nectar.
Ecological Interactions
* Hummingbirds drink nectar from tubular flowers.
* Carpenter bees may steal nectar by biting a slit in
the base of the flower.
Human and Landscape Uses
* Used as an upright, medium-sized landscape plant.
Seasonal Changes
* Dormant in winter.
* Growth spurt in spring and
after summer rains.
Temperature Extremes
* Tolerates both heat and cold
extremes of southwestern deserts,
but may suffer frost damage below
20°F (-7ºC).
Soil Needs
* Needs well-drained soil.
Special Care
* Older branches sometimes
flop or droop. Prune as
needed to shape the plant.
* Plant will flower less if
placed in shady area.
* If jack rabbits have access
to your garden, this plant
may need to be protected
with a wire cage.
