Scott Stokes
ESTHERVILLE-Scott Stokes has been named new executive dean for the
Estherville campus of Iowa Lakes.
Stokes was selected from an outstanding field of six finalists, including both
internal and external applicants. He served as registrar for Iowa Lakes, a position
he held for six years. He has been active on several college committees, which
involve academic policies and curriculum. In addition, he has participated on
the enrollment management team and an advising for success group.
This experience has provided him with an extensive background of student
needs and issues, as well as, knowledge related to the entire college and its
academic standards.
“This position offers me the chance to continue to work with the outstanding
faculty and staff of the Estherville campus,” Stokes said. “I’m thankful to
work with such a good group of dedicated individuals, college wide, who have
established some great initiatives, which I will continue to support as executive
dean.”
Stokes is a member of the Estherville Public Library Board, has represented
the college at community events and has participated in and assisted at
foundation scholarship events in the area. He also wants to expand upon his
local involvement.
“I look forward to building on the positive relationships, which the college
has with the community,” Stokes said. “Also, I want to work with members of
the advisory committees of the Estherville campus to help serve their needs for
continued growth in local business and industry.”
And, the northwest Iowa native appreciates this region.
“I feel very fortunate to live in such a great community,” Stokes said. “It’s a
great place to live and raise a family.”
Valerie Newhouse, president of Iowa Lakes, credited Stokes with a proven
track record and an exemplary work ethic.
“Scott is a visionary and a problem solver,” President Newhouse said.
“While serving as registrar, he investigated options for the future and guided
Iowa Lakes to first go paperless with its academic catalog and then to invest
in a system where records are electronically scanned, thus making student
information available to all campuses simultaneously.”
Stokes has worked with all five college campuses and has a good
understanding of the entire college.
“He relates well to staff from diverse backgrounds and can bring them
together to help move the college forward,” President Newhouse said. “Scott
has demonstrated an ability to customize our college software to help streamline
processes for all our staff.”
He also has a good rapport with students.
“He represents the college in a positive manner to students, employees,
visitors and the community,” President Newhouse added.
Prior to his position as registrar, Stokes worked at Iowa Lakes as the housing
manager, intramurals coordinator and as assistant men’s basketball coach for
two and a half years.
Stokes earned a Masters of Science degree in Education Leadership in
2005 from Southwest Minnesota State University, a Bachelor’s degree in Math
in 2003 from the University of Northern Iowa and an Associate in Arts degree
from Iowa Lakes in 2000.
The Trustees of Iowa Lakes officially accepted Stokes as the executive dean
at their Jan. 17 meeting.
Former President Richard Blacker
Passes
Richard H. Blacker, long-time employee and former President of Iowa Lakes
Community College, passed away Dec. 24, 2011, after a battle with cancer.
Blacker was Director of Vocational Education from 1966 to 1971, when he
became President of the college. He held that position until his retirement in
1993. Colleagues remember him as a great leader, who helped to grow and
improve the college.
“When he became president, the statewide community college system was
still in its infancy - having only been established a few years earlier,” said current
Iowa Lakes President Valerie Newhouse. “Under his leadership, numerous
programs were initiated and many facilities were built. These programs and
facilities are woven into the core fabric of the college today.”
ALL CAMPUSES-On Jan. 25, 2012, Iowa Lakes Community College student senators embarked on a trip to the Iowa State
Capitol in Des Moines to attend the 24th Annual IACCT Student Legislative Seminars held at the Ramada Tropics Resort.
The first order of business was to tour the Iowa State Capitol. As the student senators arrived
at the capitol building, several comments were made about the beautiful gold-leafed dome.
Sun Mudiavita, a sophomore said, “I was impressed with the grandure of the gold dome.”
Dani Huston , from Idaho Falls, Idaho, said, “It wasn’t what I was expecting and it’s different from the one back home.”
After the tour the student senators headed to the Ramada Tropics Resort to attend the 24th Annual Legislative Seminars.
Govenor Terry Branstad and State
Senator Jack Kibbie were two of several
speakers who spoke to all community
college student senators present.
As the ILCC student senators enjoyed
the seminars, they also had a
chance to socialize with other Iowa
Community College students from
across the state and network with
state senators and representatives.
On Thursday, Jan. 26, the student
senators headed back to the capitol
building to have breakfast with legislators
on the first floor. Then they had the
opportunity to listen to Senator Kibbie
and to participate in honoring Senator
Kibbie before the students made the
return trip to Iowa Lakes. ( Story below)
Bill Lapczenski said that he was
very pleased with the student senators
who attended these seminars.
College Trustees Board Members,
Community College Presidents and
staff along with agency boards and
Rotunda. State legislators and special
guest Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad made
remarks regarding Sen. Kibbie’s
significant contribution to Iowa’s
educational system.
In 1965, Senator Kibbie sponsored
the bill to create Iowa’s Community
elected official in the Iowa House of
Representatives, as a member of the
Iowa Lakes Community College Board
of Trustees and in the Iowa Senate,
Kibbie has remained a steadfast
supporter of Iowa’s Community
Colleges. Kibbie was first elected to
the Iowa House in 1960. He served
on the Iowa Lakes Community College
EMMETSBURG-Students in the Hotel and Restaurant Management program at Iowa Lakes Community College were
thanked recently by the Emmetsburg Knights of Columbus organization for their assistance in preparing food for the Fall
Harvest Dinner in Emmetsburg.
The students used November’s Fall Harvest Dinner in Emmetsburg as a learning experience on how to prepare a large
amount of food and transport it to a remote location.
The Knights of Columbus members of Emmetsburg sponsor the event and the students prepare food for more than
600 hungry people.
A check has been given to the college, which will be used for scholarships for Hotel and Restaurant Management
students.
“They help with making everything, but the turkey,” said Bob Wuebker, a member of the Knights. “This year, they also
made most of the pies.”
This has been an annual project for the students for many years.
“It’s a nice partnership and we appreciate what they’re doing. They’re always right there for us,” Wuebker added.

Davis creates Graphic Design banner
Student Kipp Davis puts the finishing touches on his banner.
By Bethany Dieter
ESTHERVILLE-Graphic Design
student Kipp Davis is always looking
for a challenge. When advisor Debbie
Wilson approached Davis and asked
him to use his artistic talents to create
a new banner for the Graphic Design
lab, Davis was ready and willing.
Davis is from Spencer, Iowa, and
came to Iowa Lakes Community
College because it was close to home
and had a good Graphic Design
program. This is his first year at Iowa
Lakes and Davis says it is a good
school.
Iowa Lakes
has to say
goodbye
By Bethany Dieter
ESTHERVILLE-Broadcasting student
Michael Wichtendahl was involved in
an automobile accident on Nov. 4,
2011, which left him with a hard road
to recovery. Then, on Friday, Nov. 25,
2011, he died at the age of 19.
Wichtendahl was born in Algona,
Iowa, on April 24, 2011, and attended
Algona High School. He was in
his second year at Iowa Lakes
Community College. Those who
knew him well would say he was a
goofy, happy guy who loved to have
fun.
Broadcasting Advisor Robert
Pritchard said, “Mike was a good
student. He had a lot of fun and liked
to joke around, but still got his work
done and was able to help others
out. A guy like me could really relate
to him because I was always one to
play jokes and have a good time. He
was always a lot of fun to have in
class and I will miss him.”
The funeral services for
Wichtendahl were held in Algona,
Iowa, on November 29, 2011.
Davis has had a history with art
and has been creating since he was in
seventh grade. He uses paint marker,
airbrush, spray paint and acrylics. He
also designs on shirts and hats. “Any
type of design a person wants, I can
make it,” Davis says.
When he was asked to do the
Graphic Design banner, he was
shocked. “It’s cool doing things to
get my art out there. It’s just a way to
express myself and advertise. I cannot
thank Deb Wilson enough for giving
me this opportunity. It’s kind of like I’ve
left my mark,” Davis explained.
Wilson stated, “I think it’s just so
Davis and friend Taylor Smith did
the banner over Christmas break and
it is now displayed in the Graphic
Design lab. He said it took only a
couple of days to complete. Davis has
also done some art for his high school
in Spencer, Iowa, and in the Spencer
Dream Center.
Davis is always looking for new
challenges with his art and plans to
Steven Michael Wastler holds his
finished copy of his novel entitled
“Dear Mother.”
Writing for
pleasure
By Bethany Dieter
ESTHERVILLE-Iowa Lakes
Community College student Steven
Michael Wastler does many different
things with his free time when he is
not attending class or riding his bicycle
and enjoying life. One of Wastler’s
biggest hobbies is writing. Wastler
recently finished his first novel to be
in his ten book series entitled, “Dear
Mother.”
Wastler began writing this novel in
2004 and has been working hard ever
The Iowa Lakes Handbell Ensemble
performs at the Holiday Coffee House on
Dec. 6, in The Max, Estherville campus.
since. He started writing the novel in
Seattle, Wash., as a three-page letter
to his own mother. He then decided to
build off of that to create a story that
can be enjoyed by all. “This is really
going to be one amazing ride with
all of the adventures and fun that the
characters have. I am so excited to get
this novel out for people to read and I
know they will be wanting more by the
end of the story,” Wastler stated.
There will be two more books in
the series including one written as a
novella. The stories to be included
in the novella are entitled, “Oneson,”
“The Glass Turtle,” “Name” and “The
Turbine Tower.” “The Turbine Tower”
is a short story influenced by the
Iowa Lakes Community College Wind
Turbine.
Wastler is releasing only a limited
number of special edition copies that
These copies will be released
on having his second full novel,
called “One to Nine,” published in
June of 2012.
Wastler is a student in the Bio
Renewable Fuels, Wind Energy and
Hotel Management programs at Iowa
Lakes. Before attending Iowa Lakes
Community College, Wastler attended
Frederick Community College in his
hometown of Myersville, Md. He took
classes for his degrees in Culinary
Arts and English Literature.
Wastler is also the leader of the I
Ride/Rock On Festival. This festival
is just a chance for anybody to get
out in nature and have a great time
riding their bicycle. One of Wastler’s
main goals of the festival is allowing
people to see that people need to
preserve the world and protect nature.
He encourages everyone to get on
their bikes, move at their own pace
and just see what a beautiful place the
world really is.
Wastler hopes to have all four
stories from his novella published into
full stories and available for release
by 2013.
On more than one occasion, I’ve
A man running on the
right track
By Bethany Dieter
Athlete Spotlight
ESTHERVILLE-There are many
passions in each person’s life.
One of Cody Wikoff’s passions
is running. Wikoff is a member
of the Iowa Lakes’ Track Team.
His main reason for running for
the Iowa Lakes’ Track Team
was to stay in shape, while he
is in college. He says that it is
good exercise and a good way
to impress the ladies.
Wikoff was born and raised
in Florissant, Mo., which is a
suburb of St. Louis. While he
was in elementary and junior high school, he played soccer.
He played soccer for seven years, until he got into high school,
where he then started working at Hardee’s. Wikoff says he played
on a very good soccer team, which was always first in its division.
In his spare time, Wikoff enjoys riding his BMX bike, riding his
four-wheeler, hanging out with friends and partying. He is a very
outgoing person and always likes to meet new people. He also
enjoys long walks under the moonlight.
Wikoff came to Iowa Lakes Community College with his
cousin, Johnny Beutler, and they share a room on campus.
Wikoff enrolled in Iowa Lakes because of the Wind Energy
Program, where he is studying to be a Wind Energy Technician.
He stated, “Iowa Lakes has a very good Wind Energy Program
and I see good things happening for me in the future here.”
Head Coach Corey VanGroll said,
“I knew we were going to be facing a
very strong and talented team. I was
unhappy not because of the score of
the dual or of individual matches, it
was because we didn’t compete in all
positions for seven full minutes.”
Lakers versus Iowa Western:
Iowa Lakes Wrestling team traveled to
Council Bluffs to take on the Reivers.
The dual began at 157 pounds where
Travis Johnson started the Lakers off
strong with a pin in 5:38. Other great
performances came from Thomas
Moman, Nick Lawrence, Matt Wyss,
and Skyler Rice. Lakers wrestled
open at 125 and 149 pounds, giving
Iowa Western 12 team points.
“It is hard to win when you start
the dual off 12-0. Although it hurts
to lose, I feel all eight guys wrestled
well,” said VanGroll.
Super Duals: The Lakers
wrestled four matches against Itasca,
Labette, Ridgewater, and Rochester
Community and Technical College.
Lakers finished the day winning two
and losing two.
VanGroll Said, “ it was good to
see where we stand against regional
opponents. I think we wrestle well
as a whole, but still have a lot of
individual things to work on before
the regional tournament”.
Top performers for the Lakers
were Thomas Moman, Nick Lawrence,
and Matt Wyss who went 4-0 on the
day. Also Skyler Rice went 3-1 along
with Jim Doyle.
