Olympiad 'Geofest-2009' was organized
by CMS Mahanagar Campus III from 7 to

Lucknow University lit the lamp of
learning to inaugurate the festival. He
honoured and gave away prizes to the
winners of various contests held at this
festival. Over 1000 entries for various
competitions including Greetings Galore,
Fantasies, Photo Gallery, Kaleidoscopic
Hues etc. were received by post from
around 100 reputed schools and colleges
of all the SAARC countries namely
Pakistan, Maldives, Bhutan, Sri Lanka,
Bangladesh, Nepal and various states of
India. All these entries were put up for
display in the form of an exhibition at
CMS Kanpur Road auditorium. Talents of
the students of various countries and their
ideas on peace and unity were reflected in

During the inaugural ceremony of SQC Convention, 'Mahatma Gandhi Peace Award'
will be conferred on H.E. Mr Jagnauth. The Governor of Uttar Pradesh will present the
'Key of Lucknow' to the President of Mauritius on 3 December. Academicians and
quality experts from 13 countries of the world including Bangladesh, Turkey, UK,
USA, Pakistan, Germany, South Africa, Philippines, Mauritius, Nepal, Sri Lanka,
Ireland and India will explain their concepts on quality at the Convention. In addition
the convention will also conduct a series of competitions on quality for the students of
the participating countries. Approximately 1800 students and quality experts are
arriving in Lucknow to attend this international convention.

Can't think too much of myself
She was walking on the platform, with
torn clothes on her body. Her hungry mouth
told a story of her prolonged starvation. Her
open mouth was demanding food from the
passers by. I had to go to my uncle's house at
Puri. I did notice her pathetic condtion, but
had no time to help her. The train was about
to start for Puri. I was very hungry and
opened my tiffin to eat. When I was about to
eat the sandwich, the little girl came in front
of me, "I have not eaten anything for the last
three days. I am very hungry; I have a sister
crying for food. Will you give me a loaf of
bread to eat?" Her little eyes were full of
tears steaming down her dry cheeks. How
could I eat the food, when in front of me, I
saw such a small girl who had not eaten
anything for three days? I had also not eaten
for three hours and I was feeling so hungry.
How must the little girl feeling who had not
eaten for three days? I recalled what Swami
Vivekanand said had once." Those who
serve others serve God better." My eyes
were full of tears I gave her the whole food I
had. The girl was very happy and I was glad
to see the innocent smile on her face. I felt
happy that I had made a little girl happy who
was starving for three days. The train for
Puri started. I was happy that I made at
least one person in this world happy. .And
that was the day when I chanaged forever. I

became helpful and polite to everyone from
that day onwards. Hello ! I am Deepshikha
Ruhi and this was the incident of my life
that changed me from the old, cruel and illmannered
girl. God has given us a precious
gift and that is 'life'. Life would have
become dull and colourless if there was no
love, peace and unity. For some people, life
is a useless, boring drama that goes on and
on. Sometimes, I think that the world is full
of goody – goody people, but hardly a good
man! Sometimes, when I think of this, I
prefer to be left to myself. I think 'helping',
is the most wonderful virtue. It is not done
under duress or for greed. Helpfulness
should come out from a pure, loving heart.
And those who care for others or help others
to get something in return are selfish. The
saying of a great saint, "It is good to lend a
hand. But it is shameful to let go of it" has a
great meaning.
We should help one another and not to
destroy or kill one another. The earth is very
beautiful, pure and peaceful.
Dr S Radhakrishnan has rightly said,
" We are born to love, not to hate,
We are born to help one another,
not to destroy one another".

The call of Ganga Ram, the Atma
In the 'true events' column of our esteemed
magazine, I am presenting some true events
of my grandmother's life as told to me at
bedtime.
One Sunday afternoon, my grandmother,
Rani’s parents returned from 'Nakkhas'
market in Chowk, Lucknow. Rani was a girl
of about nine or ten years of age. Her parents
asked her to guess what they had bought for
her. “Ice-cream!” was her spontaneous
reply. Instead, a bird’s cage was flung right
in front of her with a small baby bird with
closed eyes inside it. Even though it was an
attractive sight, yet it was not what she had
expected, and so she had to make efforts to
show excitement. It was a baby parrot. Her
parents sensed her disappointment and told
her about its good breed. “It will pickup
whatever is taught to it,” they said. She was
hungry and so after a quick lunch, she
yawned and went off to sleep.
Days and months passed and as her
mother that is, my great grandmother, gave
so much attention to the tiny male parrot,
keeping it always by her bedside at night, it
grew up with feathers becoming visible and
wide open eyes. Not only this, as she recited
the mantras on her rosary at the calm of
night, he picked them up, and whatever he
remembered, he recited during the day.
There were many other words which he was
taught and he memorized. He could also
recite a couple of lines of the 'Hanuman
Chalisa.' Before I forget, I must mention that
he was named 'Ganga Ram' and he was of the
royal ‘Hiraman’ variety with a dark, red
colour ring around his neck. Now, he could
speak about a hundred words all noted in her
notebook. He repeated the names of family
members and frequent visitors to the
household and recognized them also.
After Rani’s father, who was a doctor,
died, her brother left for USA for further
studies. Rani got married. Her mother along
with Ganga Ram and others continued to
live in the huge palatial house.After waiting
for her son to return from the States for full
five years, Rani’s mother decided to go to the
States and persuade him to come back with
his wife. She felt too lonely. Poor Ganga
Ram was entrusted to the care of a relative
couple living there. She left.I must also
mention that when Rani’s father died, Ganga
Ram became almost dumb and spoke
nothing except a few words only either when
he was hungry or when he was frightened.
Rani and her husband visited him often
but could not keep him as they were mostly
moving from place to place. Ganga Ram
recognized her and showed great love and
licked her fingers.
After six years or so, my great
grandmother came for a visit and lovingly
approached Ganga Ram's cage. He pounced
on her with an open beak and wide eyes,
white in anger. For him, his mother had
betrayed him! Her sin was unpardonable!
She never realized the deep feelings of a
bird. She was helpless and had to return to
the United States. Rani and her husband
came to stay in Lucknow. Ganga Ram was
happy. He was about forty years now. It was
winter. That year it was very cold, so she
took special care of Ganga Ram and kept
him in a cozy place, all covered. One
morning, as she uncovered him to take the
cage out in the sun, he was dead, but sitting
with a chilli held in his hand which dropped
as he was lifted. They buried him along with
the chilli near the Shiva Temple in the
compound just were the water poured by
devotees on the Shiva Linga fell below.
Years have passed and Grandmother

night, my grandmother dreamt that Ganga

Preparing to sleep, after long hours of
school and games, I grabbed a story book
from my table. It was my favourite 'Bed time
stories'. Only a few lines had crossed my
eyes when I was slightly distracted by a
sound outside in the courtyard.
I looked through the window, there was
nothing yet the tinkering of the utensils was
indeed mysterious I retired to bed but was
not able to sleep. A loud explosion broke the
silence of night and I was jolted out of my
bed. I wanted to shout but could not utter a
word. I buried my face in my pillow and
tried to sleep but the tinkering sound again
reached my ears.
I mustered all my strength to get down
and slowly crept towards the switch board
— by now wide awake. Hesitatingly I called
out loudly, 'Who is there? I went round the
house to find nothing amiss. I sat up tense
and worried. The fear was taking hold of me.
I pinched myself to ascertain if I was
hallucinating, No! I was in my complete
senses.
I took a deep breath and the thought of a
ghost in the lawn made my heart palpitate
fast, but my scientific mind was not ready to
accept the logic. But, sleep was now miles
away! Suddenly the curtain rod on my
window came clanking down along with the
curtain.

It was 5 o' clock when I
woke up. It was not yet dawn when with a
yawn, I stood beside the window and had a
look outside. I was amazed to see such a
wonderful sight right in my garden. It
looked like a piece of heaven. I was
compelled to walk away along the path of
my garden. There, I saw the birds
chirping, the flowers blooming and the
squirrels running across the path and
feeding their little ones. There I saw a
lovely rose in a flower pot. It looked so
pretty and when I was about to touch it the
rose cried, "Don't hurt me ! I've done no
wrong! It was for the first time when I
Ram is calling her to visit him. She said in
the dream, “How can I see you when you
are no more?” and pat came the reply “of
course, my physical body is no more, but
my 'atma' (soul) is there where you left
me.” In the morning, my grandmother
related her dream to and look me to the
temple. We prayed for him and
remembered him with closed eyes. Now, I
am also a part of Ganga Ram's story. I feel
blessed by him, as he was very fond of my
grandmother. Why should he appear in the
dream after so many years and call her?
Perhaps he wanted to see and bless me. I
adore the soul-unseen.

I sprang to my feet and rushed outside
shouting 'Who is there'? but of no avail. I
was by now exasperated and hysteric with
fear and apprehension.
I glanced towards the wall clock, it was
only 10:30 p.m. There was still an hour or
so for my parents to return home. I prayed
fervently to God, to get me through this
ordeal and save me from the clutches of the
unseen ghost, which I was sure haunted my
house.
For the next hour or so, I sat on my bed
waiting eagerly for my parents' return.
The door bell rang and I rushed out, just
falling in my mother's arm to save my life.
She consoled me and I felt relieved of the
fear.
I narrated the incident, she searched
every nook and corner of our house but to
no avail. We had a sound sleep and got up a
little late the next morning. As I picked up
the newspaper, the headline to my surprise
stated – 'Lucknow experienced a mild
earthquake measuring four to five on the
Richter scale leaving a trail of destruction'.
I was taken aback, how could I not
relate that tinkering sound of utensils to the
occurrence of earthquake? Was my
geography woefully so weak?

why he feared me. It replied, "You humans
have made nature unsafe. There is
pollution, war, trees being felled and
many more disasters. As it is, we have to
fight against natural calamities. But you
humans have made no efforts to save us.
You have rather worsened the conditions.
I'd prefer being withered away by the wind
rather than being crushed in your hands.
Our thorns are not enough to protect us.

My summer vacation had
started and I was very excited
about it. I was just playing
around, when my mother told me
to go upstairs and read a book. I pulled
out a book from my rack and sat on my
couch to read. It was a secret Seven
Mystery written by Enid Blyton.
Suddenly, I heard a rumbling thunder.
I looked out of the window and was
petrified to see a comet like thing falling
from the sky. At the same time, my
mother called me downstairs. I went
down and saw that my friends had come
to call me for playing. I went with them
outside and told them that I had seen a
comet falling in the jungle.
They did not believe me and therefore
decided to go inside jungle to find out.
We were horrified to see a big UFO. We
saw a cave in the UFO. My friends and I
decided to go into the cave. When we
entered the cave it was too dark to see.
When we moved ahead we saw a little
light.As we walked to the end of the cave
we entered into a new world. We were
astounded to see pigs flying in the sky
instead of birds while birds were
swimming in the lake like fishes. We
scratched our heads in amazement when
a bunny stopped in front of us and spoke
in our language. He said "Will you be my
friends?" We three were astonished. We
thought that somebody was playing a

wanted to explore his world. We
immediately agreed. He whistled and a
train approached us. The train was made
up of chocolate. The chimney was made
of water. We seated ourselves at the back
compartment. And the bunny took the
engine seat. I felt a little awkward and later
on discovered that the train was flying.
The bunny showed us a choco pond.
The trees bore precious jewels instead of
fruits. The flowers were two meters big
with jelly in the centre. The bunny stopped
the train when he saw our interest in tasting
the things. We got down and started eating.
We ate all the wonderful things and
enjoyed ourselves.
Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice
which woke me up. It was my mother. It
took a short while for me to realize that I
was dreaming. I looked out of the window.
It was a bright sunny day. My mom
appeared on the door, and asked me to
come downstairs for the lunch.
It was the strangest dream I had ever
seen and after having lunch I continued
reading my story book.

test. The teacher passed over the question
papers and we all began writing for the
exam. I was really confident because I had
studied hard. I was a little worried about
Silver because she didn't study that much.
Everybody was giving their test papers in.
So I passed my test forward to Silver and she
gave it to the teacher. Everyone was relieved
that the test was finally over. I asked Silver
how the test went. She said it went well and
that we both would get good marks.
The next day we went to school and the
teacher was announcing the marks. The
teacher called my name and said that she was
very disappointed with me because I was a
good student and that she had never thought
I would fail. Fail! how could I ever fail? I
worked so hard and studied hard; there must
be something wrong. The teacher called out
Silver's marks and said very cheerfully, Well
done, you have passed with 90%. I was
amazed how Silver had got such high marks.
Something was definitely wrong. I asked my
teacher if she could show me my test papers
to check my mistakes. She showed me my
paper and I saw that it was not my paper
because I don't write in cursive handwriting.
I write in print. My teacher told the Principal
who found out that my best friend Silver had
swapped papers with me. When I found out
who did it, I was really shocked because I
never thought that my best friend would do
that to me.
I went to my friend and asked her why
did she do such a thing. She said that she was
very sorry. She did it because she never got
good marks and for once she wanted to score
well. So we both forgave each other because
we both are really good friends and did not
want to ruin our friendship for a petty reason.
We made a promise that we will never lie to
each other.

award by Symbiosis Institute of Media
and Communication for his contribution
to the field of communication. Mr
Srivastava is also the India Coordinator of
World's Children's Prize for the Rights of
the Child (WPCRC) and has been actively
working to promote the rights of children
across India. His efforts through WCPRC
have reached over 4500 schools in India
that has made an impact on the lives of
over a million children in past four years.

In nature none of the creatures, animals fall sick at the same rate as human do.
There are no eye glasses, heart blockages or heart attacks. There is no
Jaundice, Diabetes or Arthritis.
Have you ever seen a tiger wearing glasses or an elephant having a heart attack?
No.
Then why us?
Are we, the most pristine creation of the maker supposed to suffer? Are we the only ones who are
'Supposedly' made in the image of God to have Hospitals, Doctors, Medicines and Diseases?
Is this a quirk of fate or is it a colossal error on Natures part that the human being having a body that is
called a fit instrument to realize God is to suffer physical pain, pangs of disordered functioning and
consume chemical concoctions till he is drugged, addicted or simply numbed into accepting that it is
„Normal , "It happens to most people" or "There is no Cure"?"
Taking the above into consideration, the scientists in the field of health, wellness and nutrition realized that
something is amiss.
Their concepts of calorie counting, balanced diet and feeding on bland or boiled foods to keep fit is just not
giving the results which they had aimed for.
Through this a new science emerged known as ORTHOMOLECULAR NUTRITION. The term
"Orthomolecular" was coined in 1967 by Nobel Prize winner Linus Pauling to express
the idea of " the right molecules in the right amount" ( ortho is a greek word for "right"
and not bones as commonly understood). In this paper, it was indicated that the right
molecules are "substances that are normally present in the human body."
Thus Orthomolecular Nutrition attempts to provide optimal amounts of micronutrients
and can produce magical results for a student.
