Book Review
Keynotes Materia Medica Volume –I
Keynote prescription has been an indispensable part of our homeopathic practice since inception. The concept is as
long as homeopathy, but was given a boost by H. C. Allen, to whom we must pay our gratitude. Keynotes play a major role in
our day to day practice. Almost every other day we hear senior physicians suggesting us to go through Keynotes every day to
flourish our practice to newer heights. Practicing Keynotes is like an art which must be followed by heart.
To keep the spirit of Keynotes high and with aim to update them, Central Council for Research in Homoeopathy (CCRH)
has undertaken an initiative to compile Keynotes Materia Medica from authentic sources. The book is a work of dedication
added to ever growing sea of materia medicas, being authentic and simple. The salient information regarding the book can be
summarized as: -
In the present work author(s) have expressed the need to have an updated version of existing keynote materia medica, as
there are various instances where practitioners report ambiguity, spelling mistakes, improper arrangements of symptoms etc.
Moreover, there are certain concepts/old terms which are obsolete now days. This is need of the hour to update such
information for our own knowledge sake and evolution. The compilation has beautifully collected keynotes, keeping “Keynotes
by HC Allen” as base and addition of keynotes from authentic source books like - Hering’s Guiding Symptoms of our Materia
Medica, Hahnemann’s Materia Medica Pura, J. H. Clarke’s dictionary of Practical Materia Medica and Pocket manual of
Homoeopathic Materia Medica by William Boericke. It is worth mentioning here that no additions from any experience,
verification or by other means have been included in this book. Therefore, this book is a pure compilation of keynotes from
authentic source books, and may aptly be called keynote pura.
In addition to compilation, authors have given some interesting and useful sections loaded with information from
various sources. Basic information about drug such as botanical/chemical name, source, part(s) used, habitat,
constituents/molecular formula, etc., followed by an introduction, are some of the new headings you will discover in this book.
Here also, the information is primarily derived from Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India (HPI). The source of information if
other than HPI is mentioned in the footnote of remedy. The keynotes are supplemented with keywords, sphere of action,
makeup of the remedy, ailments from and guiding features which make this materia medica handy and informative from the
first line itself. The schema of each remedy is placed as per Generals (Mental and Physical) followed by Particulars (arranged as
per systems of the body). Care has been taken to replace old terms with latest ones, but some old terms are kept owing to their
historical value associated with homeopathy.
The book has compiled drugs according to the official syllabus for 1st professional year of undergraduate students of
homeopathy in India endorsed by Central Council of Homoeopathy. This limits the number of drugs compiled to 25 only in
volume – I. This work will be carried on to volume - IV, keeping in view the syllabus of 2 nd , 3 rd and 4 th BHMS. This fact may be
considered as one of the minor drawback of this compilation. Since such a compilation will come periodically with limited
number of drugs, readers would have to wait more for such handy and authentic book. It is sincerely hoped that authors might
consider publishing more number of remedies (beyond recommended for this book) in one or two handy volumes, for the
benefit of profession.
All in all, this book is a good and handy compilation of keynotes for both practitioners and students. You can also give
Effect of Homeopathic Medicines on Transplanted Tumors
in Mice. ES Sunila, Girija Kuttan, Preethi KC, Ramadasan
Kuttan, Asian Pacific J Cancer Prev, 8, 390-394, 2007
Abstract
Ultra low doses used in homeopathic medicines are
reported to have healing potential for various diseases but
their action remains controversial. In this study we have
investigated the antitumour and antimetastatic activity of
selected homeopathic medicines against transplanted
tumours in mice. It was found that Ruta graveolens 200c
and Hydrastis canadensis 200c significantly increased the
lifespan of Ehrlich Ascites Carcinoma and Dalton's
Lymphoma Ascites induced tumour-bearing animals by
49.7%, and 69.4% respectively. Moreover there was 95.6%
and 95.8% reduction of solid tumour volume in Ruta 200c
and Hydrastis 200c treated animals on the 31st day after
tumour inoculation. Hydrastis 1M given orally significantly
inhibited the growth of developed solid tumours produced
by DLA cells and increased the lifespan of tumour bearing
animals. Some 9 out of 15 animals with developed tumors
were completely tumour free after treatment with
Hydrastis 1M. Significant anti-metastatic activity was also
found in B16F-10 melanoma-bearing animals treated with
Thuja1M, Hydrastis 1M and Lycopodium1M. This was
evident from the inhibition of lung tumour nodule
formation, morphological and histopathological analysis of
lung and decreased levels of γ-GT in serum, a cellular
marker of proliferation. These findings support that
homeopathic preparations of Ruta and Hydrastis have
significant antitumour activity. The mechanism of action of
these medicines is not known at present.
Abstract
Homeopathy is considered as one modality for cancer
therapy. However, there are only very few clinical reports
on the activity of the drugs, as well as in experimental
animals. Presently we have evaluated the inhibitor effects
of potentized homeopathic preparations against N'-
nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA) induced hepatocellular
carcinoma in rats as well as 3-methylcholanthrene-induced
sarcomas in mice. We have used Ruta, Hydrastis,
Lycopodium and Thuja, which are commonly employed in
homeopathy for treating cancer. Administration of NDEA in
rats resulted in tumor induction in the liver and elevated
marker enzymes such as gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase,
glutamate pyruvate transaminase, glutamate oxaloacetate
transaminase and alkaline phosphatase in the serum and in
liver. Concomitant administration of homeopathic drugs
retarded the tumor growth and significantly reduced the
elevated marker enzymes level as revealed by
morphological, biochemical and histopathological
evaluation. Out of the four drugs studied, Ruta 200c
showed maximum inhibition of liver tumor development.
Ruta 200c and phosphorus 1M were found to reduce the
incidence of 3-methylcholanthreneinduced sarcomas and
also increase the life span of mice harboring the tumours.
These studies demonstrate that homeopathic drugs, at
ultra low doses, may be able to decrease tumor induction
by carcinogen administration. At present we do not know
the mechanisms of action of these drugs useful against
carcinogenesis.
Use of biotherapic in the control of natural infestation
by Boophilus microplus: pilot study
Nilceu Lemos Silva et al
Int J High Dilution Res 2008; 7(22): 36-38
ABSTRACT
In the control of tick-borne disease (TBD), resistance to
chemical products has been reported and a concern with
the preservation of the environment requires alternative
procedures to control infestation by Boophilus microplus
worldwide. The use of biotherapic preparations is one of
such alternatives. The aim of this study was to evaluate the
effects of a biotherapic mixture including B. microplus in
naturally infested cattle. 27 animals were divided in 3
groups (n=9): I – control, received no treatment; II- treated
with amitraz dip; III- treated with a standard commercial
mixture of biotherapic 12CH, p.o. Group III presented a
statistically significant decrease of ticks when compared to
the control group (p

SUBJECTS: A total of 119 patients with vertigo of various
origins (from whom 105 patients could be analyzed as
intended per protocol).
MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Frequency, duration, and
intensity of vertigo attacks.
RESULTS: Both homeopathic and conventional treatments
showed a clinically relevant reduction in the mean
frequency, duration, and intensity of the vertigo attacks.
The therapeutic equivalence of the homeopathic remedy
and betahistine was established statistically.
CONCLUSIONS: Concerning the main efficacy variable,
therapeutic equivalence between the homeopathic remedy
and betahistine could be shown with statistical significance
(confirmative analysis). Both remedies reduced the
frequency, duration, and intensity of vertigo attacks during
a 6-week treatment period.
Also, vertigo-specific complaints were significantly reduced
in both treatment groups.
Feb;7(1):59-67.
BACKGROUND: Topical over-the-counter remedies exist to
aid in the control of seborrheic dermatitis and chronic
dandruff on a superficial level. Low-dose systemic oral
nickel and bromide therapy has shown promise in providing
improvement and eventual clearing of the disease.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to further
evaluate the effect of an orally administered low-dose,
homeopathic mineral therapy (Potassium bromide 1X,
Sodium bromide 2X, Nickel sulfate 3X, Sodium chloride 6X)
on seborrheic dermatitis and chronic dandruff.
METHODS: Forty-one patients with seborrheic dermatitis
and/or chronic dandruff were assigned to one of two
treatment groups: Active (containing the medication) or
placebo (vehicle). Study medication was administered in a
placebo-controlled, randomly-selected, double-blind study
for 10 weeks. At the end of 10 weeks all patients crossed
over to the active medication, under a different label for an
additional 10 weeks in an open study format.
RESULTS: Twenty-nine patients completed the 10-week
Evaluation of Hepatoprotective Effect of Leaves of Cassia
sophera Linn, Evidence-Based Complementary and
Alternative Medicine | Volume 2012, Article ID 436139 |
Open Access
In the present study, the hepato-protective activity of
ethanolic extracts of Cassia sophera Linn. leaves was
evaluated against carbon-tetrachloride- (CCl4-) induced
hepatic damage in rats. The extracts at doses of 200 and
400 mg/kg were administered orally once daily. The
hepatoprotection was assessed in terms of reduction in
histological damage, changes in serum enzymes, serum
glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase (AST), serum
glutamate pyruvate transaminase (ALT), serum alkaline
phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin, and total protein levels.
The substantially elevated serum enzymatic levels of AST,
ALT, ALP, and total bilirubin were restored towards the
normalization significantly by the extracts. The decreased
serum total protein level was significantly normalized.
Silymarin was used as standard reference and exhibited
significant hepato-protective activity against carbon
tetrachloride-induced hepatotoxicity in rats. The
biochemical observations were supplemented with
histopathological examination of rat liver sections. The
results of this study strongly indicate that Cassia sophera
leaves have potent hepato-protective action against carbon
tetrachloride-induced hepatic damage in rats. This study
suggests that possible activity may be due to the presence
of flavonoids in the extracts.
Anti-inflammatory activity of flower extract of Calendula
officinalis Linn. and its possible mechanism of action
Preethi KC, Kuttan G, Kuttan R. Indian J Exp Biol. 2009
Feb;47(2):113-20.
Abstract
Calendula officinalis flower extract possessed significant
anti-inflammatory activity against carrageenan and dextraninduced
acute paw edema. Oral administration of 250 and
500 mg/kg body weight Calendula extract produced
significant inhibition (50.6 and 65.9% respectively) in paw
edema of animals induced by carrageenan and 41.9 and
42.4% respectively with inflammation produced by dextran.
In chronic anti-inflammatory model using formalin,
administration of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight
Calendula extract produced an inhibition of 32.9 and 62.3%
respectively compared to controls. TNF-alpha production
by macrophage culture treated with lipopolysaccharide
(LPS) was found to be significantly inhibited by Calendula
extract. Moreover, increased levels of proinflammatory
cytokines IL- 1beta, IL-6, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma and
acute phase protein, C- reactive protein (CRP) in mice
produced by LPS injection were inhibited significantly by
the extract. LPS induced cyclooxygenase-2 (Cox-2) levels in
mice spleen were also found to be inhibited by extract
treatment. The results showed that potent antiinflammatory
response of C. officinalis extract may be
mediated by the inhibition of proinflammatory cytokines
and Cox-2 and subsequent prostaglandin synthesis.
Int J High Dilution Res 2008; 7(24):152-158
ABSTRACT
The most common vaginal neoplasias in old dogs are
leiomyoma and fibroma. Although surgical excision is the
indicated treatment, it does not eliminate potential
complications that may lead to death or poor quality of life.
This paper reports the case of a 9 year-old female
Doberman dog with vaginal leiomyoma attended by
copious and recidivating colporrhagia homeopathically
treated between March and December 2005. Homeopathic
approach was the one designed at Homeopathic Unit of
the Veterinary Hospital, Rural Federal University of Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil. The progress of disease was assessed
through clinical evaluation, laboratory exams and
ultrasonography. Hemorrhage decreased while the general
clinical state of the animal improved. After 7 months of
homeopathic treatment, the tumor was spontaneously
eliminated through violent abdominal contractions, which
was followed by recovery of the animal's state of health.
(MVHT). We define MVHT as the extent to which a
homeopathic intervention and the main measure of its
outcome, as implemented in a randomized controlled trial
(RCT), reflect 'state-of-the-art' homeopathic practice.
Methods: Using an iterative process, an international group
of experts developed a set of six judgmental domains, with
associated descriptive criteria. The domains address: (I) the
rationale for the choice of the particular homeopathic
intervention; (II) the homeopathic principles reflected in
the intervention; (III) the extent of homeopathic
practitioner input; (IV) the nature of the main outcome
measure; (V) the capability of the main outcome measure
to detect change; (VI) the length of follow-up to the
endpoint of the study. Six papers reporting RCTs of
homeopathy of varying design were randomly selected
from the literature. A standard form was used to record
each assessor's independent response per domain, using
the optional verdicts 'Yes', 'Unclear', 'No'. Concordance
among the eight verdicts per domain, across all six papers,
was evaluated using the kappa (kappa) statistic.
Results: The six judgmental domains enabled MVHT to be
assessed with 'fair' to 'almost perfect' concordance in each
case. For the six RCTs examined, the method allowed
MVHT to be classified overall as 'acceptable' in three,
'unclear' in two, and 'inadequate' in one.
Conclusion: Future systematic reviews of RCTs in
homeopathy should adopt the MVHT method as part of a
complete appraisal of trial validity.
