Pests in your home
Eastlands Homes aims to make sure that residents can enjoy a pest free environment. Some
pests, such as rats, mice, bedbugs and cockroaches are known to present a health risk when
infestations are present in occupied premises. Other pests, including wasps, book lice and ants
are generally more of a nuisance than a health risk.
Free pest control treatments
As a responsible landlord, Eastlands Homes will
provide pest control services free of charge in all
homes and communal areas for the following;
● Mice (inside the property)
● Cockroaches
● Bedbugs
● Wasps (inside the property)
● Fleas (will only be treated free for new residents
who have been living at the property for less than
four weeks)

Rats
Rats inside and outside the property are treated free
of charge by the Local Authority. Please contact
Environment On Call: 0161 954 9000.
Pests that are your responsibility
The following pest control treatments will not be paid
for by Eastlands Homes. You are advised to seek your
own solution.
● Ants (in your property or garden)
● Bees
● Beetles
● Birds
● Squirrels (unless they have entered your property
through disrepair)
● Fleas
● Silverfish
● Wasps (outside the property unless they are
preventing direct access into the property by the
main entrance)
● Bats (they are a protected species and have to be
dealt with by the Bat Conservation Trust)
● Foxes
● Other pests

In exceptional circumstances Eastlands Homes may
provide assistance in meeting all or part of the costs of
pests not covered by the policy.
● Where the customer is particularly vulnerable and is
unable to deal with the issue and has no family or
relatives that can help.
How to identify pests
Mice - Mice are 70 - 90mm long, with grey brown fur
which is lighter on the underside. The tail is longer than
the head and body. Often the droppings found are
black, shaped like a grain of rice and 3 - 6mm long.
Prevention - Seal all gaps into your home and make
sure windows and doors are close fitting. Make sure
household waste is disposed of correctly and dustbin
lids are closed properly.
Cockroaches - There are two main species in Britain;
The Oriental is dark brown in colour and about 30mm
long. The German cockroach is light yellowish brown
and about 12mm long. Both species are divided into
three sections and have large antennae protruding from
the head.
Prevention - Keep your house clean and throw away
any unwanted food immediately. Restrict hiding places
by making sure all cracks and crevices in your home are
sealed.
Bedbugs - The adult bedbug is flat, oval shaped and
around 6mm in length. Its colour can vary from reddishbrown
to dark mahogany.
Prevention - Keep rooms clean, check mattresses and
wash bedding regularly. Be careful when buying second
hand furniture and check it thoroughly.
Wasps - Wasps are characterised by bright yellow and
black abdominal stripes. They are 30mm long with two
pairs of wings.
Prevention - Do not leave food uncovered. During the
spring and summer, wasps crave high protein and
sugary foods, so make sure items are well wrapped.
Domestic refuse should be covered at all times.
Fleas - Adult fleas are normally 1 - 4mm long, brownish
in colour, without wings, but with powerful legs
adapted for jumping. Female fleas can live up to two
years, during which time they can lay up to 1000 eggs.
Prevention - Pets must be treated regularly with a
product approved for veterinary use. Regular cleaning,
particularly with a vacuum cleaner, will help prevent the
build-up of infestation by removing eggs and larvae
from floors, carpets, furniture and where pets sleep.
Rats - The common rat typically has brownish fur on its
back and is grey underneath. Adult body length 200 -
270mm plus tail length of 150 - 200mm.
Prevention - Seal all gaps to your property, repair
defective drains immediately and make sure manholes
are not left uncovered. Do not allow rubbish and piles
of wood etc. to accumulate in your garden as these
provide rats with nesting materials.
