It gives me great pleasure to introduce our 

2010/11 Collection, the sixth catalogue 

since the successful launch of La 

Barrique Fine Wines in 2005. 

The major highlight of this year’s catalogue 

is, without exception, the introduction of our 

new, exclusive Scottish Agency - Patriarche 

de Beaune. We are delighted to be able to 

offer to your lists, this prestigious Burgundy 

Negociant / Eleveur’s Vin de France range 

of wines – Pedigree & quality at a very 

affordable price (page 22). 

Staying in France, we have included two 

more top notch wines from Domaine 

Bachey-Legros of Burgundy. Both 

Santenay 1er Cru’s (a red and a white) - 

where the red is the essence of finesse, the 

white is one of the creamiest we have ever 

tasted from this region! 

the second Champagne of Taittinger and 

the latter, the Multi Gold Medal winning 

sparkling wine from West Sussex! 

We have also become agents for the 

PradoRey range from Real Sitio de 

Ventosilla. Both the Ribera del Duero 

Crianza and the Rueda Verdejo are 

exceptional and we highly recommend them 

to you. 

From the New World, we have included 

more from the irrepressible Grant Burge 

of Barossa, Instinct from Kate Radburnd

What Makes Coonawarra so 

Special? 

The wine region of Coonawarra 

on the limestone coast of South 

Australia is famous for Cabernet 

Sauvignon produced on it's famous 

'Terra Rossa' soil. The first vines were 

planted by John Riddoch at Yallum 

Station, South Australia in 1890. 

Being just 60 kilometres from the 

coast Coonawarra has a somewhat 

maritime climate not dissimilar 

to Bordeaux and therefore offers 

prominent blackcurrant and plum 

fruit in it's wines. Coonawarra's 

Terra Rossa soil is one of the most 

famous terriors in the new world, 

covering a strip of land just 15km x 

2km, North of Penola, known as the 

Riddoch Highway. 

After the great depression the 

original Riddoch cellars were 

converted into a distillery and it 

wasn't until 1951 that fortunes 

changed when Samuel Wynn 

recognised the potential of the red 

soil and purchased the distillery for 

the production of wine. The rest,as 

they say is history, and due to this 

foresight Coonawarra was to play 

a major role in the transformation 

of the Australian wine industry and 

also the Cabernet Sauvignon grape.

Sunnycliff is made in the 

Mildura wine region which 

was transformed from an arid, 

scrubby, no man's land, to an 

agricultural oasis in the 1880s. 

Back then Alfred Deakin, a former 

Prime Minister of Australia, 

encouraged California's Chaffey 

Brothers to bring their irrigation 

expertise to the vast inland valley 

of the Murray River in North West 

Victoria. 

Stretching over 865 acres near 

the Murray River at Red Cliffs, the 

Deakin Estate vineyard is a model 

of successful contemporary 

viticultural management. The 

Estate is an industry leader in 

innovative vineyard techniques 

such as partial root zone drying, 

canopy management and 

yield monitoring. Agricultural 

research bodies and others in 

the industry access the vineyard 

for study purposes and in 2002 

they received a Save Water 

Award for our water conservation 

practices aimed at protecting 

the environment and future 

productivity of the region.

An Overview of the 

Chilean Earthquake

Our Central Valley agencies 

and Rene Marino, President 

of Wines of Chile reports that 

the devastation caused by the 

earthquake and it’s impact on 

the wine industry shall be shortlived, 

although infrastructure 

and rebuilding will take some 

time. Thankfully, although many 

thousands of employees who 

work in the vineyards, wineries, 

bottling plants and offices have 

suffered badly, very few casualties 

have been reported. 

The 8.8 magnitude earthquake 

had it’s epicentre near Maule, 

Chile’s oldest wine region but 

the tremors affected many wine 

regions to different degrees. 

Miguel Torres, our wine agent in 

Curico, North of Maule reported 

no casualties but major winery 

damage with 300 casks smashed 

and a stainless steel vat cracked 

with the loss of 100, 000 litres 

of liquid. Overall, approximately 

125 million litres of bulk, bottled 

and aged wine have been lost 

equivalent to 12.5% of the 2009 

vintage.

The Cluver family-run winery and 

estate has roots that go back four 

generations and their acclaimed 

wines have International 

appraisal for their elegance and 

finesse. 

We are delighted to showcase 

the 2008 Elgin Pinot Noir in this 

year’s offerings: 

Produced from only Burgundy 

clones this wine has tremendous 

depth of colour, an expressive 

wild berry bouquet on initial 

nosing precedes more complex 

aromas of violet, coffee and 

chocolate. An expansive, but 

delicate palate of sweet red 

berries to the fore and a finish 

which is typically velvety and 

luscious. 

This Pinot, with it’s near perfect 

acidity, has the flexibility to 

compliment a myriad of dishes 

- Both shellfish and game fish 

will work wonders with this wine 

slightly chilled, whereas warm to 

room temperature and anything 

from grilled beef, roasted 

vegetables or a strong, hard 

cheese would all go down a treat!

Argentina 

An Overview 

Argentina is the fifth largest 

producer of wines in the world 

and indeed up until the early 

1990s was the largest producer 

outside of Europe. 

Historically Argentine winemakers 

were more interested in quantity 

rather than quality and around 

90% of wines consumed were 

consumed in the home market, 

the vast majority of which were 

deemed unexportable! 

What a change a decade can bring 

- coming on the back of Chile’s 

successful wine development over 

the past 20 years or so, the grape 

producers of Argentina realized 

that less is more as far as yield per 

vine is concerned. 

Quality of fruit, and therefore 

wine, improved dramatically and 

this alone helped their lucrative 

export markets succeed. The 

main wine regions of La Rioja, San 

Juan and of course Mendoza are 

now flourishing with the focus 

on quality, hand-picked grapes 

of which Malbec reigns supreme. 

Part of the Argentine success 

story also lies with it’s flexibility to 

experiment and develop a great 

variety of grapes, particularly those 

grown on the higher slopes - Pinot 

Noir, Shiraz, Viognier, Chardonnay 

and Chenin Blanc are but a few 

which have exported successfully.

Their winery is located in Elciego, 

one of the pillars of Rioja Alavesa,

calcareous-clay soils are optimal 

for the plantations of Tempranillo, 

Mazuelo and Graciano grapes - 

low grape yields per hectare and 

aged vines guarantee the highest 

quality achievable of their wines. 

La Barrique are agents for two of 

their absolute classics: 

Crianza 2005 

Using only the best quality of fruit, 

the wine has a distinctive and 

demure smoky red berry nuance, 

preceding a more robust, elegant 

palate offering ripe strawberry 

flavour and vanilla sweetness as a 

backdrop. This Crianza is enhanced 

by 15 months ageing in American 

oak and although tannins are soft 

and demure there is a definite 

heftiness on show highlighting the 

skill of the winemaker. 

Reserva 2004 

Luscious, silky smooth and complex 

are my immediate thoughts after 

tasting this top notch Reserva. Aged 

in exclusively American oak for 18 

months then a further 18months 

in bottle, the wine is filled with ripe 

blackberry and blueberry fruit with 

hints of cassis. These initial flavours 

precede a subtle middle palate of 

spices, cinnamon, vanilla and cloves 

with a fulfilling, rounded finish - A 

definitive foody wine if ever I saw 

one!

Chateau Batailley 2001, 5eme Cru 

The vineyards of Chateau Batailley today comprise of around 60 hectares, largely in the South-West 

of Pauillac. The terroir is typically gravel over sandstone and clay with vines averaging over 30 years 

of age and, as one would expect is dominated by the Cabernet Sauvignon grape - the breakdown 

being 70% Cabernet, 25% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc / 2% Petit Verdot. The harvest is manual, 

then the fruit is destemmed, before a temperature-controlled fermentation takes place as usual, in 

stainless steel. The malolactic occurs part in steel vat, part in oak, but all the wine is aged in oak for 

up to 16 months, with the oak being 60% new in each vintage. Once finished, the wine is then fined 

using egg white, then bottled without using fining or filtration. 

Chateau Batailley is well respected and has a reputation for being a ‘Drinker’s Claret’. For those who 

appreciate a no nonsense Pauillac at an affordable price - enjoy…

Christiane Bachey-Legros, has 

been managing the estate since 

1993, and together with her 2 

sons, Lénaïc and Samuel, they 

manage a domain of 16ha (40 

acres) located across the areas 

of Santenay, Maranges and 

Chassangne-Montrachet. The 

uniqueness of this vineyard lies in 

the fact that it is one of the oldest 

of the Southern Côte de Beaune. 

The vines are, on average, 55 

years old; one is even 80 years 

old and it produces a very 

concentrated Santenay 1er Cru 

fromits small, deep black grapes. 

The family tend their vines by 

hand and plough their stony, 

mineral-rich soils (Santenay was 

renowned for mineral baths 

dating back to Roman times) 

instead of using chemicals. 

Harvest is manual and two 

selections are made before 

pressing: one in the vineyard 

and a second upon arrival at the 

cellar. Though even-handed in 

their winemaking, the intense 

concentration of some of the 

domaine's Pinot from older vines 

can require up to 50% new oak.

Terms & Conditions 

1: TRADE PRICES 

These are quoted exclusive of Value Added Tax, and are subject to market and currency fluctuations and changes in duty rates. Where returnable 

deposits are used, the price quoted excludes the deposit charge. 

2: CREDIT ACCOUNTS 

Payment is due by the 10th of the month following invoice date. 

Payment by Direct Debit will be paid on the 20th of the month following invoice date. 

We reserve the right to charge 1.5% interest on overdue accounts. 

A charge of £15 will be made for each Cheque / Direct Debit unpaid by a customer’s bank. In the case of a cheque marked “Please Represent” the 

charge will be made each time the cheque is returned. 

3: TITLE 

The goods shall remain the Sellers property until the Buyer has paid for the goods and all other sums due to the Sellers have been paid. 

Although the goods remain the Sellers property until paid for, they shall be at the Buyers risk from the time of delivery and the Buyer shall insure 

them against loss or damage accordingly (and in the event of such loss or damage shall hold the proceeds of such insurance on behalf of the 

Sellers as a trustee for the Sellers) 

I The Buyer has not paid for the goods in full by the expiry date of the credit period allowed by the contract. 

II The Buyer is declared bankrupt or makes any proposal to his creditors for a composition or other voluntary agreements. 

III A receiver, liquidator or administrator is appointed in respect of the Buyers Business. On cessation of the Buyers right to possession of the 

goods in accordance with the clause the Buyer shall at his own expense make the goods available to the Seller to repossess them. 

The Buyer herby grants the Seller, his agent(s) and his employees an irrevocable licence to enter any premises where the goods are stored 

to repossess them or inspect them at any time. In the event that the exercise by the Seller of the rights conferred by this clause result in the 

Seller repossessing go for which the Buyer has paid, the Seller may set off against any sums which may become due from him on that basis, 

any sums due from the buyer in the respect of other contracts. 

4: DELIVERY 

Delivery is free within our van delivery areas. 

Elsewhere (most of England and Wales), deliveries are made by carrier and prices are available on application. 

5: CLAIMS 

All goods must be examined and checked at the time of delivery or collection, and any breakages or shortages must be signed for and reported 

within 24 hours of the delivery. 

6: RETURN OF GOODS 

Return of goods is not permitted unless the goods in question were not ordered or were delivered damaged. In this event a refund will be issued 

by the way of a credit note after the return of such goods. No goods may be returned if they are price marked or disfigured. 

7: BEST BEFORE DATE 

We are unable to accept returns of, or give any credit for any goods which the “Best Before Date” is approaching or has passed. This policy is in line 

with Brewers Conditions. 

8: NEW ACCOUNTS 

Prospective new customers will be requested to supply references from trade suppliers together with the name and address of Bankers. 

Until satisfactory references are received we will be happy to trade on a “cash with order” basis. 

9. PRICE CHANGES 

Due to the variety of our Suppliers and the extensive range that we stock, Wallaces Express will not be able to always notify customers of Annual 

price and duty adjustments, in advance of the changes. We reserve the right to apply Manufacturers and Duty changes as appropriate on a pro 

rata basis without advance notification. 

10: ERRORS 

We reserve the right to amend Price Lists, Quotations, Invoices and Credit Notes to correct errors.
